Haze Gray Mystery Picture #138 Answer
Can You Identify This Ship?
This is the cruiser Raleigh (CL 7) fighting to stay afloat at Pearl Harbor. Raleigh was one of the Omaha class scout cruisers of the 1916 shipbuilding program. Constructed at Bethlehem Quincy, she entered service in 1924. She saw peacetime service in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets, and was moored on the far side of Ford Island, opposite Battleship Row, during the attack of 7 December 1941. A single torpedo amidships on the port side left her struggling to remain afloat, but she survived. In this view a tug has brought a barge loaded with salvage pontoons alongside, while the capsized target ship Utah lies in the background. Raleigh was repaired at Pearl Harbor and overhauled at Mare Island, then operated thoughout the Pacific, with much of her time spent in Alaskan waters. Towards the end of the war she shifted to the Atlantic for training duties, and was placed out of commission soon after the war ended.

JAMES POULOS: WHY THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION WANTS WAR
Statement of the WSWS Editorial Board, 14 September 2001
In the midst of the hysterical war mongering of the US government and a state-controlled media that knows no shame, it is more than ever necessary to retain not only one’s composure, but also one’s ability to think, analyze, and reason. It is surely appropriate to mourn the terrible loss of life on September 11. But sympathy for the victims, their families and friends should not blind anyone to the fact that powerful sections of the US ruling elite view this tragedy as a welcome opportunity to implement a militaristic agenda that has been in the works for more than a decade.
Modern wars require a pretext, a casus belli that can be packaged to the public as a sufficient justification for the resort to arms. Every major war in which the United States has been involved since its emergence as an imperialist world power—from the Spanish-American War of 1898 to the Balkan War of 1999—has required a catalytic event that inflamed public opinion.
But whatever the nature of such trigger events, they never proved, in the light of sober historical analysis, to be the real cause of the wars that followed. Rather, the actual decision to go to war—while facilitated by the change in public opinion produced by the casus belli—flowed in each instance from more essential considerations rooted in the strategic political and economic interests of the ruling elite.

"According to HealthGrades, the health-care-rating organization that conducted the study, needless deaths averaged 195,000 a year in 2000, 2001, and 2002. 'That's the equivalent of 390 jumbo jets full of people dying each year,' says Dr. Samantha Collier, vice president of medical affairs." - Newsweek, August 2, 2004
"The study by Health Grades Inc., a health-care consulting firm in Colorado that rates hospitals, estimated that medical errors in U.S. hospitals contributed to almost 600,000 patient deaths over the past three years, double the number if deaths from a study published in 2000 by the Institute of Medicine."- The Wall Street Journal

v. James Poulos
APPEALED FROM: Rutland Family Court
DOCKET NO. 127-3-98 Rddm Trial Judge: William D. Cohen
In the above-entitled cause, the Clerk will enter: Father appeals the family court's affirmance of a magistrate decision denying father's motion to modify a January 4, 1999 child support order. We find no error in the court's decision, and affirm. Viewing the facts in the light most favorable to the prevailing party below, Mullin v. Phelps , 162 Vt. 250, 260 (1994), the record establishes that the family court magistrate issued a child support order on January 4, 1999 requiring father to pay $418 per month to help support his three minor children. In December of 1999, father moved to modify the order claiming that he lacked the ability to financially support his children. Although father holds a masters degree in psychology and has taught as an adjunct professor at various Vermont higher educational institutions, father claimed that he was unable to find suitable, gainful employment. He asked the magistrate to reduce his support obligation to zero. The magistrate took evidence on father's request on February 29, May 2, and July 10, 2000. Both parties appeared pro se in the proceeding, and the Office of Child Support was represented by counsel. After the second day of hearing, mother filed her affidavit of income and assets, along with pay stubs and completed, but unsigned, state and federal income tax returns. Father also submitted an affidavit of his income and assets, which the magistrate found was not helpful to ascertain father's income because it was hard to read and did not provide precise information.

STATEWIDE GRIEVANCE COMMITTEE James R. Fitzsimons, Complainant vs. Theodore Poulos, Respondent Grievance Complaint #98-0700 DECISION Pursuant to Practice Book §2-35, the undersigned, duly-appointed reviewing committee of the Statewide Grievance Committee, conducted a hearing at the Superior Court, 1061 Main Street, Bridgeport, Connecticut on August 11, 1999. The hearing addressed the record of the complaint filed on February 22, 1999, and the probable cause determination filed by the Hartford/New Britain Judicial District, Geographical Areas 12, 15, 16 and 17 Grievance Panel on May 19, 1999, finding that there existed probable cause that the Respondent violated Rules 1.8(a) and 8.4 of the Rules of Professional Conduct. Notice of the August 11, 1999 hearing was mailed to the Complainant and to the Respondent on June 15, 1999. The Complainant and the Respondent appeared and testified. Two exhibits were admitted into evidence. This reviewing committee finds the following facts by clear and convincing evidence: On April 6, 1995, the Respondent borrowed $150,000.00 from a client, Egidio Baraglia, evidenced by a promissory note with an interest rate of ten percent. The Complainant is the nephew of Mr. Baraglia, who died on March 11, 1998, with the Complainant thereafter becoming executor of Mr. Baraglia's estate.
