DVD-Videos.

Cry, the Beloved County
2000-10-05 08:16:18-07 by ebradway 2 comments I had to go to the cable company the other day to make sure a bill was paid and ended up buying the new digital cable converter and the add-on pack. The main reason is that it includes the Sundance channel. Now I can watch independent films 24 hours a day. Oh boy! I just finished watching Cry, the Beloved Country based on the novel by Alan Paton. James Earl Jones plays a South African minister who travels to Johannesburg to find his son - only to find that he has murdered the son of a white man. I won't go into more plot detail but I will say that it was the most moving film I've seen in quite some time. comments in ascending chronological order ( reverse Comment made: by: Mwalsh Which one did you see? There was one with Canada Lee and Sidney Poitier produced more or less clandestinely back in 1951 in South Africa, with a cheap post-dubbed sound track. There is another more recent one with James Earle Jones and Richard Harris. I believe the novel was written in about 1947. There was also a musical written by Kurt Weill(!) in the 50's, called "Lost in the Stars". A film version with Raymond St. Jacques and Melba Moore was produced in 1974 as a part of the American Film Theater, a sporadically successful venture in bringing major theater pieces to the hinterlands (it's version of "The Iceman Cometh" is great, while "The Man in the Glass Box" is reprehensible."

The film has been knocked over the years for padding conflict and stoking easy liberalism by making Poitier's character in every socioeconomic sense a good catch: But what if Kramer had made this stranger a factory worker? Would the audience still find it as easy to accept a mixed-race relationship? But there's no denying the drawing power of this movie, which gets most of its integrity from the stirring performances of Tracy and Hepburn. When the former (who had been so ill that the production could not get completion insurance) gives a speech toward the end about race, love, and much else, it's impossible not to be affected by the last great moment in a great actor's life and career. MISC(ING) *SPARK-ONLINE VERSION 32.0 by a simon remark printer friendly version This year was an historic one for the Academy Awards. Halle Berry ( Monster's Ball ) became the first woman of color to win best actress, while Denzel Washington ( Training Day ) became only the second black actor to win the coveted best actor statuette since Sidney Portier won it for Lilies of the Field in 1963. Now some cynics may postulate that the Academy picked both Berry and Washington so they could pat themselves on the back for making history, but in opinion this was not the case. For a change, the Academy actually honored the most deserving nominees. Some will argue that Russell Crowe was more deserving than Denzel, but just as Roger Ebert suggested prior to the ceremony, Crowe played a character that was within his usual scope while Denzel played a character against type. And while Crowe was good in A Beautiful Mind , Denzel set the screen ablaze in Training Day But one could at least argue that Russell Crowe was perhaps more deserving; however, Halle Berry was a clear winner. Her performance in

No More Mr. Nice Gay: Eyes' Chris Didion Hits Back
by Cornelius Delro, April 27, 2005 Chris Didion Eyes is being a black gay man. Eyes Didionplayed with smooth sophistication by actor Rick Worthy and Judd have been friends for years, and you get the sense that Didion owes Judd for more than getting him a good job once he got out. Given the light spirited nature of Eyes Not so with Worthy playing him. Rick Worthy has not only an extensive television and film resume, but considerable stage work as well. Prior to Eyes , Worthy has most recently been seen, in a manner of speaking, on Star Trek: Enterprise as the alien Xindi-Sloth. Then he was offered the role of Chris Didion, and knowing a great opportunity when he saw one, he jumped the chance to play such a role. Chris Didion is what used to be called the SuperNegro, the perfect black man, designed to counter years of negative stereotyping by Hollywood. Sidney Portier was the first and stands as the marker for all the others who came after. Portier was able to bring a level of depth and humanity that had been lacking for years in Hollywood portrayals.

at major online bookstores Review by Robert Fleming Film historian Donald Bogle's impeccable "Dorothy Dandridge: A Biography" appears in bookstores after years of interviews with the renowned African American actress' friends, associates and directors. It fills a notable void concerning one of Hollywood's most tragic yet talented stars in black film during one of its most inspired periods in the Cold War 1950s. Behind Dandridge's great beauty, there was a tremendous drive to survive and succeed which the author chronicles in this hefty 613-page biography. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1922 to an actress-mother and a minister-father, she became a child performer with her sister, Vivian, as a member of a vaudeville act, "The Wonder Kids." By 15, the girls, joined by another teen, toured the Chitlin Circuit and other venues as "The Dandridge Sisters," backed by the rhythmic swing of the Jimmy Lunceford band. By the 1950s she had headlined in two modest "race" movies. When Dandridge heard that temperamental film director Otto Preminger was casting the all-black remake of Bizet's opera, "Carmen Jones," she went all out to capture the female lead. Her superb performance in "Carmen Jones" (1954) earned the actress the stardom she had craved for so long and an Oscar nomination. Preminger became her lover on and off for the next four years, a partnership that did not produce any film offers after the adulation over her "Carmen" faded. Dandridge hated that the only roles she was offered were those of the sexy, erotic, mulatto fighting off the advances of amorous white males.

Frank Silvera 1946 *Frank Silvera was born on this date in 1914. He was an African-American actor. From Kingston, Jamaica, he moved to the United States and grew up with his family in Boston Public Schools.
Silvera moved to New York City, where he launched his career as an actor. He joined the American Negro Theatre in Harlem and got a part in the play, "Anna Lucasta," that played successfully on Broadway and in London. Silvera was there at the beginning of a new era for Blacks in American theatre. He worked with Ossie Davis, Alice Childress, Ruby Dee, Sidney Portier, Maxwell Granville, Hilda Simms, Harry Belafonte, Stanley Green, Claudia McNeill, Diana Sands, Louise Stubbs, Isabel Cooley, Gertrude Jeannette, and a host of others, who entered the new American theatre scene.
Due to his looks, ability to transcend color, race, and his skill with language, Silvera moved into the new elite inner circles of the leading American theatre groups, where he became an active member of the famed Actors' Studio of New York. Almost no one in the audience realized that he was Black, when he played the Italian father of characters portrayed by Ben Gazzara and Anthony Franciosa, in the Broadway hit play, "A Hatful Of Rain." Actress, Shelley Winters knew, as did Harry Guardino and Steve McQueen an understudy actor in the production. It had been rumored that Frank helped to save his job during a dispute backstage. Actors, Marlon Brando, George C. Scott, Estelle Parsons, Geraldine Page, Lou Gilbert, Rip Torn, Paul Newman, Lonny Chapman, Lee Grant, Jimmy Dean, along with directors, Elia Kazan, Arthur Penn, Lee Strausberg, Anna Strausberg, and the vast majority of the Actors' Studio members, all knew very well. However, they did not tell, or it did not matter.
