A Conversation with Rod Steiger
by Jeff McNeal
Interview conducted and published November 1, 2001
Rod Steiger has enjoyed an extensive and enviable career as a film actor in Hollywood, appearing in such classics as ON THE WATERFRONT, OKLAHOMA!, DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, plus contempory films like MARS ATTACKS and scores of other films and television appearances dating back to 1950. Steiger originated the role of MARTY on television, but Ernest Borgnine wound up in the Oscar-winning film role. To celebrate the long anticipated DVD release of the digitally restored classic DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, the always unpredictable, frank and frequently entertaining Steiger sat down with us to discuss his work in DOCTOR ZHIVAGO and share some other interesting details about his work in an exclusive interview with TheBIGPictureDVD.com We discussed his favorite roles, his triumphs, his regrets and more. We found Mr. Steiger to be very pleasant and open, with a good sense of humor and a keen memory for detail regarding most of the films we brought up, but discovered a mutually puzzling gap in his recollection concerning a recent film role performed about five years ago. TBP: Thank you for consenting to this interview, Mr. Steiger. It's a real pleasure to be speaking with you.

Directed by: Joseph Sargent Sidney Poitier
Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5
Description:
Sidney Poitier made his directing debut with this 1972 action comedy with an edge to it. Made at the height of the Black Power movement in America, the film has an unmistakable militancy in its story of a wagon-train guide and a con man who team up to throw a posse of white nightriders off the trail of escaped slaves. Poitier has never been a distinctive filmmaker, and Buck and the Preacher certainly doesn't indicate any early signs of raw talent that later went undeveloped. But the film's energy and sense of fun, hand in hand with the suggestively political zing, make it watchable. Tom Keogh

Summary: Simply Superb. Comment: Excellent flick! Holds your interest from start to finish.
Harry Bellefonte and Sidney Portier have the chemistry to make this movie really work! And I can't say which actor does the better performance. I especially like the scene where they are bargaining for passage to the West past the Indians, and the Commanches demands more horses.
Mel Brooks later did a funny take off on this movie scene in "Blazing Saddles" where he plays the Indian Chief who, when he sees the Blacks, exclaims "Ah, Schwartzes!"

Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists If you're into hip-hop, or just looking for an interesting, funny and remarkably informative coffee table book, Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists is perfect.
I actually read it front-to-back, which should say something considering my short attention span and the fact that it really is more of a pick-it-up-read-and-discuss type book. It covers, in great detail, the history of rap, with all sorts of great stories, anicdotes and sidebars, from its origin to 1999 or so.
It's been called "A must-have for any rap aficionado." by Russell Simmons, and "The best book I've ever read-and I can't read!" by Chris Rock.
Sounds like a good recommendation to me. Technorati Profile

Port-E-Aye, which might also be wrong. I've *never* actually heard
his name pronounced, and he's probably still banned here in Shadowville. Quote: So how exactly does this explain your misspelling of his name? You've presented yourself (rather lamely) as an expert on his work, and yet you've never actually seen his name in the credits? Or- better yet you've seen his name in the credits, but - because you pronounce it differently - you decided all those credits must have gotten it wrong? I think it's how they spell it in that alternate reality he typed about. Which is a different alternate reality from Karla's, where Iris replaces Betsy in the "Kristofferson Talisman" scene.

Kids Program 'A Day at the Movies' Program
The Chicago Film Critics Association launched its "A Day at the Movies" program (formerly called, "Send a Needy Kid to the Movies") in the fall of 1993 after receiving sponsorship support from Kevin Costner Steve Martin and Robin Williams . Since then, other film and business professionals have donated to this worthy cause, benefiting an estimated 28,000 students and involving more than 70 under-funded Chicago schools in this unique media literacy and arts program.
The program sends inner city schoolchildren on a "film field trip." Students are bussed to SONY's Piper Alley Theatre in downtown Chicago where they are shown a film with an important life message. A Chicago film critic introduces the film and offers insights about the film. Upon returning to school, these 3rd-6th grade students write a review, critiquing the film and revealing what they have learned. Teachers use the film as an educational tool, teaching everything from grammar to creative writing, critical observation to film techniques. Sponsors are then sent the reviews written by the children so they can experience first-hand the impact of their donation.
The CFCA originally initiated this program to provide underprivileged schoolchildren with exposure to the magic and inspiration of films, recognizing that films are a popular medium to impressionable young children. Additionally, many young schoolchildren from urban blight areas never set foot in a movie theatre and the experience of a "film field trip" was seen as providing a positive, lasting memory. The CFCA strongly felt that film should be used to introduce children to new horizons. As studio pioneer Walt Disney once said
