Porter, Cole (1891-1964)
page: For more than thirty years, Cole Porter was as well known for the (often scandalously) witty and urbane music that he crafted for Broadway musicals and Hollywood films, as for being one of the leaders of international cafe society. Because he feared that the music-buying public would not take seriously love songs written by a homosexual, he lived the paradoxical life of an openly closeted gay man. Married to socialite Linda Lee Thomas, one of the most beautiful women of her generation (but variously reported as from eight to fourteen years Porter's senior), he publicly maintained a heterosexual facade while privately indulging in weekend all-male gatherings that included chorus boys, wartime servicemen, and Hollywood bit players, in addition to conducting intense, short-lived love affairs with Ballets Russes designer Boris Kochno, architect Eddy Tauch, dancer-choreographer Nelson Barclift, and actor Robert Bray, among others. Porter, Cole (1891-1964)
page: In "Down in the Depths (on the Ninetieth Floor)," for example, the speaker complains of her inability to transcend emotional pain even though she is immured in the "regal eagle nest" of her Manhattan penthouse. The sophisticated urban life of the speaker is no compensation for the sorrows of disappointment in love but, as the juxtaposition of height and depth in the refrain suggests, the speaker's pose of stylish aloofness is the only way to combat depression in Porter's world. Porter wrote of both painful sexual yearning and heartache in a mannered, sophisticated way. Little wonder that Fred Astaire, who could dance seduction with an equally mannered elegance, was Porter's favored interpreter. Sponsor Message.
Porter's World of Style and Wit For radio listeners and movie- and theater-goers in Depression- and Eisenhower-era America, Porter's name was synonymous with "fashionable" and "debonair," summoning images of art deco sleekness, tuxedoed elegance, and chilled martinis served on the Lido.

Porter, Cole Porter, Cole, , American composer and lyricist, b. Peru, Ind., grad. Yale, 1913. Porter's witty, sophisticated lyrics and his affecting melodies place him high in the ranks of American composers of popular music. He was an elegant and debonair man, in spite of a riding accident (1937) that left him crippled. He studied music at Harvard and with D'Indy at the Schola Cantorum in Paris. After one early failure, most of his musicals were vastly successful. They include Greenwich Village Follies Gay Divorce Anything Goes Jubilee Red, Hot and Blue Du Barry Was a Lady Panama Hattie Something for the Boys Kiss Me, Kate Can-Can (1953); and Silk Stockings (1955). 'Cole Porter: A Biography'
by William McBrien Knopf
Review by Stephanie Zacharek www.salonmagazine.com
Web posted on: Wednesday, October 21, 1998 1:41:04 PM EDT (SALON) There's no reason a biography of a figure as dazzling as Cole Porter shouldn't be as frisky as a glass of Veuve Cliquot. One of the most brilliant songwriters of the century, Porter was clever, witty and well-to-do, and he traveled in the most sophisticated social circles in Europe, Manhattan and Hollywood from the roaring '20s practically until his death, in 1964, at the age of 73. He was married for 22 years to a woman he dearly loved, although he was a (barely) closeted homosexual. In 1937, both of his legs were crushed in a horseback-riding accident, and he suffered often-agonizing pain for the rest of his life. Porter was a complicated, private man who wrote some of the best-known and best-loved songs of our time. As a biographer's subject, he's practically a textbook case, a golden opportunity for a writer to blend research and analysis: How did his private life inform his sensibility, and conversely, what secrets does his work reveal about him? McBrien, to his credit, has taken a tremendous amount of care to write about Porter's many lovers and crushes without being catty or gossipy: He clearly wants to preserve the dignity of his subject, and that's admirable. But there are ways to keep a subject's dignity without draining all the blood out of him and his work. McBrien quotes a heartbreakingly tender letter Cole wrote to Boris Kochno, one of his lovers, only to follow it with this leaden bit of analysis: "The passion here may startle those who know Porter only from the nonchalant persona he chose to present to society. But these words help those who are moved by Porter's songs to understand the origins of the ardor that is replicated in lyrics and in his throbbing rhythms and intoxicating melodies."

57. The Jazmin Trio
San Francisco female trio with keyboard, bass and drums plays jazz standards from Ellington, cole porter, Jobim, and Charlie Parker. Photo, links.
http://www.batnet.com/jazmin/red/pages/jazmin.html
Jazmin is a trio of women jazz musicians who play music from the Standard Jazz repertoire, to enhance the dining atmosphere or special occasion, or as a center-stage performance and swing dance band. In the tradition of the classic piano trios of the 1940's and 50's, they play their own arrangements of tunes by Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Dave Brubeck and Charlie Parker. Also the smooth Latin sounds of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Clare Fisher, and some get-down blues can all be heard in a set. Lori Stotko's classical training brings strong technique and a real flourish to her tasteful jazz piano. The experience of bassist Toni Clark and drummer Patty Rokeach in big band and other styles of music gives them the strength and scope to provide solid backup and some interesting solo work of their own. Jazmin is available for work in clubs and restaurants, for private parties, weddings and other extra-ordinary functions. Although they typically work as a trio, Lori Stotko can be hired as a solo pianist; or the group can work as a duo, trio or quartet (with a saxophone or trumpet player) as best suits the occasion. I've had this idea for a long time: Americans tend to create their most characteristic art when they think they're doing something else. Our dramatic tradition is not the stage as much as the movies. Even there, note that we make movies, rather than "films." That is, John Ford made movies (and Westerns at that), whereas nice boys like the Cohn brothers make films. While Americans have produced great art song in the tradition of Europe, it turns out that the so-called "standards" from the teens through the 40s have a deeper hold not only on the natives' affections, but on much of the rest of the world's as well. I may, for example, admire - or even be moved by - Barber's "Sure on this shining night," but I make some sort of effort to bring it to consciousness. On the other hand, I find myself humming "Our Love Is Here to Stay" or "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." Can we even call this "tradition?" None of the music is very old, after all, and we tend to regard it, while the paint is still spanking new, as disposable. Producers, composers, lyricists, and "book" writers for decades looked on the Broadway show (even with such examples as
