Starring: Christian Campbell, John Paul Pitoc
Released by: New Line Home Entertainment
Run time: 90 minutes
Rated: R Trick isn't much more than a feel-good romantic comedy. There are no great life lessons to be learned. Nothing particularly epic is going on. It's really nothing more than a romantic comedy about two hot boys trying to find a place to get it on. But over the course of the film, you find yourself growing more and more attached to the young protagonists, until in the end your sentimental side may have actually taken over your ecchi side and it's grumbling ache for a good sex scene. And more male strippers! More male strippers! Ahem. Trick introduces us to the young writer, Gabriel, who shares a very small flat with his straight roommate. His best friend played by Tori Spelling in an appropriately annoying but surprisingly well-acted role is an aspiring actress helping him work on his latest musical. Gabriel is a sweet, bright-eyed little uke-looking man who's looking for some life experience and excitement to help him write songs that are true. On a whim, he visits a local gay bar/strip club, and meets Mark, a very attractive, very well-built, very (oh my god) thong-wearing stripper. Later that night, Mark picks him up on the subway, and their attempts to have a one-night-stand lead them on a series of encounters and adventures in the late hours of the city. We encounter everything from vengeful, bitchy drag queens to fascinated fangirls.

Here's another in a long line of recent films I've seen (including Cherish and CQ ) that isn't really sure what it wants to be. Thank You, Good Night tries at the same time to be both a raunchy sex comedy and an inspirational drama about achieving your dreams, but isn't nearly funny enough for the first or dramatic and compelling enough for the second. I found some of it to be mildly amusing and I enjoyed a couple of the performances, but overall, this is strictly amateur hour. The Handy Kaufmans (is that supposed to be funny?) are an up-and-coming rock group (think grunge mixed with Matchbox 20) trying to make a name for themselves in their hometown of New Jersey. The time is 1994, just after the tragic suicide of Kurt Cobain.
Lee (Christian Campbell) is the drummer with problems on the homefront, Trixie (Lara Boyd Rhodes) is the new bass player hired after the original got drunk on stage, urinated on an amp and blew it and himself up (in a funny sight gag), Mike (Scott Burkhardt) is the guitarist and true artist of the band dabbling in drugs to help find his voice and Donnie (John Paul Pitoc) is the singer and would-be lady-killer, who wants nothing more than to get laid. They're managed by former high school friend Big Frank (Jay Leggett), an obese and obnoxious, but loving and caring guy who has more hope in them than they have in themselves.

Title: Trick Release Date: Nationality and Language: USA , English Running time: 89 min MPAA Rating: R Distributor and Production Company: Fineline Features; Good Machine Director; Writer: Jim Fall, wr . Jason Schafer Producer: Eric d’Arbeloff Cast: Christian Campbell, John Paul Pitoc Tori Spelling, Steve Hayes, Brad Beyer Technical: Relevance to DOASKDOTELL site: Review: Here is another light opera buffet, without the music. (Well, now, the hero is a song writer, and gradually the music creeps in, winding up with a wonderfully lilting song “Trick of Fate” (David Friedman) to close the movie in grand Rogers-Hammerstein fashion. (In a disco scene, the familiar “I cam do anything” is played.) This film is a romantic situation comedy with gay character. The plot is stereotyped, but maybe it reflects the reality of living in New York , where struggling young artists can't afford the privacy of their own pads and have to compromise with roommates to get their lives going at all. And it really gets into the issues and grows on you. What makes this work, again, is the likeable young male "romantic" lead character, Gabriel, played by Christian Campbell. He is the ideal son, the kind any father ought to be proud of. And he has multiple talents: composing music (it sounds a bit like Scott Joplin most of the time), lyrics, and scripts, all to purse a lost genre, the family musical. In fact, the movie ends with his musical realized in the soundtrack, ending loudly, Puccini-style (again, “Trick of Fate”). I know the life. I compose and write and try to sell it, and it's hard; you have to have a real job at the same time to make it.

A story about two guys trying to make it in the big city Trick . As sweet as it is hilarious, Trick affirms the possibility of love in the most unlikely of circumstances as it follows its two appealing heroes on their perambulations through the gay demimonde of downtown Manhattan. An aspiring musical theatre writer, Gabriel (Christian Campbell) is talented, dedicated and ambitious. But there's one problem with his songs: he's detached from the big emotions he's writing about. He needs some excitement in his life, something better than running lines with his crazy actress friend Katherine (Tori Spelling) over a Chicken Caesar. So Gabriel tries out a local cruise bar, where he briefly exchanges looks with go-go boy Mark (John Paul Pitoc), the male ideal in a red thong. Later, the two men find themselves on the same subway train. Mark's approach is no-frills, but his delivery is irresistible, and he picks up the bashful songwriter as nonchalantly as a handkerchief. Thus begins an all night odyssey that finds Mark and Gabriel bouncing all over downtown Manhattan as fate, friends and misunderstandings conspire to keep them from consummating their passion. But as the sun rises over Greenwich Village, the would-be lovers are left with the feeling that the evening has yielded something far more gratifying than a one night stand.

Pitoc and Christian Campbell during their quest for a quiet trysting place in 'trick.' 'trick' is as meek as its lowercase title By Richard von Busack I NEVITABLY, trick is no treat. Director Jim Fall's little story is based on one little problem: where can Gabriel (Christian Campbell) and his new pick-up, Mark (John Paul Pitoc), find a place to make love? Their apartments won't do. Gabriel's housemate, who shares a studio with our hero, has a hot date. Mark's landlady doesn't like it when he brings home menand besides, he lives way out in Brooklyn. So the two make the rounds of New York City at night, trying to borrow friends' apartments. When this type of farce is done rightas in Martin Scorsese's After Hours we can take some malevolent glee in watching the way luck conspires to lock the men out of shelter. When it's done badly, the coincidences that build up seem like bad jokes, because, well, they are bad jokes. The events that keep Mark and Gabriel from the clinch seem as unfair as they are unfunny. The film may sound like hot stuff, but like

Every year there's a "gay film" saddled with the burden of being that long-sought after crossover that succeeds with mainstream film audiences. 1998 had Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss , a fluffy concoction that was fun and silly but had little appeal outside its core audience (though it did bring us Sean P. Hayes, now seen on TV's ). 1999's contender was the Sundance Film Festival favorite trick , the debut film of both director Jim Fall and screenwriter Jason Schafer. It's a promising beginning for both, one that takes a potentially lewd situation and attempts to make it both romantic and light-hearted. Aspiring Broadway composer Gabriel (an appropriately angelic-looking Christian Campbell) and Mark (John Paul Pitoc), a hunky go-go boy, meet, connect, and look for a place to "trick" (i.e., have a one-nighter). They seemingly have little in common except their desire and the fact that they can't find any privacy. Journeying into the funky Greenwich Village night, they encounter Gabriel's best friend and talentless actress (Tori Spelling), a vengeful drag queen (the hilarious Clinton Leupp), a dizzy cabaret singer (a hammy Steve Hayes), and others who unwittingly conspire to keep the boys from obeying their hormones. The real story, though, is what happens when our heroes set aside their hormones and connect emotionally. Mark is not the vacuous stud-muffin he appears at first, and Pitoc is sweetly appealing when he's doing more than showing off his six-pack abs.

Director Jim Fall defends his lighthearted romance, 'Trick' BY STEVE RAMOS John Paul Pitoc and Christian Campbell
Politics was not on the agenda. Neither was education. Director Jim Fall's aim with his debut feature film, Trick, was simply to make a sweet, romantic comedy. The fact that the film's two would-be lovers were young men was just part of the story. Trick is an unabashedly feel-good romance pulled from the reels of golden age Hollywood. At a time when the typical "gay" indie film is gritty and angst-ridden, Trick arrives from somewhere over the rainbow. Christian Campbell (Neve's older brother) is Gabriel, a shy New York composer who picks up a go-go boy named Mark (John Paul Pitoc). Their first night together is a thankless search for a place to be alone together. Somehow, by night's end, feelings of animal attraction turn into something more human. Opening to strong box office

Pros
Well acted by Campbell and Pitoc. Funny scenes. Cons Tori Spelling is in it. The Bottom Line Full Review Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot. This movie caused quite an uproar when it was released. Why? Because it dealt with two very taboo subjects: homosexuality and one night stands. Personally I'm quite tired of this need for the moral majority to infuse their positions on sexuality in our world. But they are there and we have to listen to them occasionally. If it was me, I'd be more in an uproar for director Jim Fall actually giving Tori Spelling work. Trick stars Christian Campbell and John Paul Pitoc as two gay men who after a quick encounter on the subway in New York decide that they would like to have a one night stand. Unfortunately for them, they just can't seem to find the perfect place to be alone long enough to...well, you know. Throughout their "adventure" for peace and quiet, the characters are dealt several blows in the form of Gabriel's (Campbell) friends including the actress wannabe Tori Spelling who does quite a fine job of reminding us why she can't act. At least in this movie, she is supposed to be a terrible actress, so perhaps I'm jumping too quick to a negative response to her appearance and should praise her for staying true to her typecast. Keep her there, so I'll see less of her.
