Interesting Note:
Mary Pickford was perhaps the first superstar the movies ever produced.
Notable Achievements:
Co-founder of the United Artists' Production Company
Born Gladys Louise Smith on April 8th, 1892 in Toronto, Ontario, Mary came from a tragic stock, plagued until the end by a grave weakness for alcohol. Her father, John Charles Smith, died suddenly from an accidental blow to the head, leaving her mother, Charlotte, without income, savings and alone with three young children. In order to make ends meet, the family took boarders into their University Avenue home. One of the borders was a theatre stage manager who suggested that Charlotte could put her children on the stage for added income. Thus began Gladys' career on the stage, on the road and eventually arriving at Broadway. The perfect theatre story of tragedy to success.
At age 15, the young Smith set off for New York and approached the famed producer, David Belasco. Against all odds, Gladys got her break on Broadway, and Belasco changed her name to Mary Pickford.

Divorcing Myth From Truth: Mary Pickford's Divorce
by Guy Rocha, Nevada State Archivist We can thank the Saturday Evening Post for giving us the long-standing myth that "America's Sweetheart," film actress Mary Pickford, was divorced in Reno. In a story published on December 11, 1937, the popular national magazine declared, "Mary Pickford gave Reno its best ad when she established residence and bought a house there in 1920 to divorce Owen Moore. When she left she gave the house to her lawyer. It is the home today of United States Senator Pat McCarran. He was her lawyer." The bell had been rung and to this day journalists and others claim that Pickford was divorced in Reno. A publication entitled The Reno Divorce Racket generated confusion as early as 1931. Reference is made to Mary Pickford, "who first made Reno divorces famous." However, other text and a photo caption note that her residency in Nevada was "at Genoa." The assumption being implied was that Genoa and Reno were in the same county when, in fact, the two communities are some 45 miles distant, in two different counties, with a county separating them. Maybe the initial source for the confusion was the Associated Press (AP) stories concerning the Pickford divorce in 1920 that had a Reno dateline.

Special report: Obituaries
Mary Pickford
Pioneer of endocrinology
John Morrison
Tuesday August 27, 2002
The Guardian

Professor Mary Pickford, who has died on her 100th birthday, was a pioneer of neuro-endocrinology. She was also the first woman to be elected to the Pharmacological Society and the first to be appointed to a professorship in the faculty of medicine at Edinburgh University. Elected a member of the Physiological Society in 1928, she later recalled that wearing tweeds was essential if women physiologists of that era wanted to be taken seriously. Needless to say, she enjoyed being mistaken for the Canadian actress of the same name. On a visit to the International Congress of Physiological Sciences in Boston in 1929, the liner on which she was travelling was met by a large squad of reporters who thought the actress was on board.

Inicio Buscador Recomendar sitio
