"Make them laugh, make them cry, and back to laughter. What do people go to the theatre for? An emotional exercise.... I am a servant of the people. I have never forgotten that." (Mary Pickford) Mary Pickford, nicknamed "America's Sweetheart," was one of the most successful women in the film industry in the early part of the 20th century. She was a successful businesswoman who demanded higher salaries and greater control in her films. Mary Pickford (born Gladys Louise Smith) was born April 8, 1892 in Toronto. Some sources list her year of birth as 1893; as a child actress Mary Pickford shaved a year off her age so she would appear to be more of an acting prodigy and continue to be cast in younger roles, which were more plentiful in the theatre. She started her acting career very early in life to support her family after her father's accidental death. She became the main breadwinner in the family by the age of ten and even though she found it hard to be separated from her family for long periods of time, she knew that it would pay off in the end. She would not accept failure. Mary Pickford (known for her long locks of golden curls) got her start in show business at the age of five, when boarders who were living in her house asked if she and her younger sister Lottie wanted to be extras in a schoolroom scene at one of the theatres in Toronto. Her first lead role was in the play

Pickford, Mary
Canadese actrice
Als "Little Mary" werd zij een ster in "The little teacher" (1910).

Mary Pickford: A Life on Film
Director: Hugh Munro Neely
USA. 1999.
By the age of seventeen, Mary Pickford had become the first actress to achieve international superstardom. By the time she was thirty, she was the first and only woman ever to own a major movie studio, the only woman to be the highest paid actor in Hollywood and the first actress to have complete control in making her films. Although she was born to extreme poverty in Canada, she became an American icon "America's Sweetheart". With comedic talents equal to Keaton, Lloyd or Chaplin, the tragic range of Gish and Swanson and business acumen to rival that of any Hollywood mogul, Mary Pickford was the consummate movie star of the 20th century. This is the definitive documentary on the most powerful woman in the history of cinema, featuring an abundance of previously unseen footage from Pickford's own archive. Mary Pickford: A Life on Film combines exceptional research with an intimate understanding of this remarkable woman, demonstrating why she and her films remain beloved and incandescent touchstones of film history. Hosted and narrated by Whoopi Goldberg. Written by Rita Mae Brown. With Janet Leigh, Roddy McDowall, Leonard Maltin, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and Charles "Buddy" Rogers.

We live in an age where the star system is entrenched, supported by Press Agents, PR firms, and image makers and driven by an invisible network of media outlets that circle the globe. Radio, television and magazines all feed a seemingly insatiable public demand for information about our modern-day icons. The world was very different at the dawn of the Movie Age. The film business was virtually brand new and everyone in it was, essentially, making things up as they went along. 70. Mary Pickford
By the early 1920 s mary pickford was the most famous woman in the world. mary pickford has been too long absent from film history.
http://www.selu.edu/kslu/pickford.html
Little Mary Who? By the early 1920's Mary Pickford was the most famous woman in the world. Her enormously popular movies were shown everywhere. Married to Douglas Fairbanks, the dashing matinee idol of the silent screen, she lived the rich and glamorous life women could only dream about. Their home, Pickfair, was the most famous private home in America, and when they traveled abroad they were greeted by enormous crowds of adoring fans. In England and Russia, hundreds of thousands of people turned out to see Hollywood's royal family. With the coming of sound, Pickford's career waned. Her sound movies were not successful, she divorced Fairbanks, retreated into alcoholism and grumpily withdrew her films from circulation. She said that the public remembered her as a little girl and that she was content to leave it that way. At her death, she had outlived her fame and the public, lacking any fuel to feed its interest, had forgotten her. Finally, the woman who invented movie stardom is back. Milestone Film and Video, using materials from the Pickford estate has just published six of Pickford's films in a series called A Sweetheart: The Films of Mary Pickford.

Mary Pickford in SUDS
"Today, Mother and I saw Mary Pickford in Suds ...We enjoyed greatly Mary Pickford's true acting in a pretty, human story; how we sympathized and were thrilled, touched, as so many different times." So wrote Anais Nin in her famous diary. Say what you will about Mary Pickford, but the perception that she was only a goldilocked waif is just not true. As she proves in Suds Suds , she even rides a horse down a steep flight of stairs, a dangerous bit of action that would usually require the assistance of a horse wrangler or even a stuntman.
Suds was originally called The Duchess of Suds and was adapted from an English one-act play introduced in 1905. Pickford is a homely Cockney laundress named Amanda Afflick who has romantic daydreams about one of her handsome customers. Amanda cherishes the shirt he had brought in for washing over eight months ago, even though he has apparently forgotten about it. So, Amanda tells her fellow workers that the garment really belongs to her fiance, an English lord. We see this fantasy via a mini-movie in which Pickford appears as a virginal lady-in-waiting, an overripe characterization that is ironically the false image many people have of Pickford.

Ficha personal de Mary Pickford
Nombre real:
Gladys Mary Smith
