Mary Pickford was the most popular woman of her day. She was "America's Sweetheart," and millions of fans around the world called her "our Mary." Her rise to unprecedented global fame coincided with the rise of popular cinema , and during those early years of film, Mary Pickford was its most adored and dynamic star. Hard Times
Mary Pickford, "the Girl with the Golden Curls," was born Gladys Louise Smith in 1892, in Toronto, Canada. She was the eldest of three children born to John Charles and Charlotte Smith. Her father had a hard time holding a job and the family's financial circumstances were, at best, uncertain. Though it was not something the family admitted, it appears that John suffered from alcoholism. When Gladys was just three and her siblings still infants, their father moved out. Three years later, in 1898, he died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Pickford would later write, "I can close my eyes and still hear that scream of Mother's at the moment Father passed on." His widow and three children were left with nothing. Stage Debut
That same year, anxious to help support the family, Gladys made her theatrical debut. She played the role of a fatherless child in a

"My Best Girl"
Mary Pickford in 1927's "My Best Girl". Welcome to "My Best Girl" . This site is dedicated not only to one of the most charming silent movies ever made but also to its leading lady, the First Lady of Hollywood, Mary Pickford. Before the three genuises of Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd, Mary was appearing on silent movie screens and Nickelodeons as people began noticing her. Beginning in 1909 and her groundbreaking work with pioneering filmmaker D.W. Griffith, to 1933 with her own studio and production company and the co-founding of United Artists, Mary became a silent film legend, her name known to audiences worldwide who affectionatly called her "America's Sweetheart".
In 1927 Mary starred in her final silent movie, My Best Girl . As shop girl Maggie Johnson, she works in a five and dime department store where she meets and falls for the handsome Joe Grant, played by Charles "Buddy" Rogers, who is actually working incognito as the store owner's son, Joe Merrill. My Best Girl was the end of an era for Mary as film was transforming itself from silents to sound. This romantic comedy is truly one of Mary's finest movies and played an even more significant role in her personal life. If you like silent movies as I do and haven't seen

    Early Life
Pickford was born Gladys Louise Smith in Toronto, Ontario Canada (for some reason, Pickford always claimed "Marie" as her middle name). Her father, John Charles Smith, worked as a purser on a steamship, but died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1898. Her mother, n©e Charlotte Hennessy, began taking in boarders, and through one of these lodgers Gladys, aged seven, gained a part in Toronto's Princess Theatre production of The Silver King as Baby Gladys Smith. She subsequently played in many melodramas and became a popular child-actress in Canada. Though her mother was Catholic, she did not raise her children in that faith, to the dismay of her own mother, a devoutly Catholic Irish emigrant, who would seize the chance later when, during an infectious disease quarantine, a priest came by, and on learning the children were not baptized, baptized them himself on the spot. edit
    Beginning of Career
Her mother took her to New York , looking for stardom, and she landed a leading role in a 1907 Broadway play

    America's Savvy Sweetheart
Mary Pickford By Anna Maria Gillis In the rough-and-tumble world of America's early film industry, movie moguls met their match in Mary Pickford. "She had no education, and yet she hit the top of the pile. She did it allact, direct, produceand she was good at it all in a way that no one could be today," says film producer Kathryn Dietz. Pickford, the tiny, doe-eyed actress known as America's sweetheart, ruled the nation's movie houses during the silent film era. No mere beauty, Pickford also cofounded United Artists and controlled her business dealings, image, and creative direction in ways that few actors since have ever managed. Pickford's impact on American film is explored in Mary Pickford, a documentary by Ambrica Productions. Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the ninety-minute film will air on the PBS American Experience series in April. "For me, doing the film was a study in celebrity," says Sue Williams, who wrote and directed the documentary and produced it with Kathryn Dietz. The 1920s footage of Pickford and actor Douglas Fairbanks traveling through London and Paris on their honeymoon gives a glimpse of the unprecedented popularity of Hollywood's famous couple, says Williams. "Crowds gathered and people swarmed them. It was like the Beatles coming to America."
