APPALACHIAN MELODY by Mark Heard Pedal Steel: Al Perkins•Harmony: Mark and Janet Sue Appalachian melody drifting softly down
Instruments of gold and red and brown
Do not need no dulcimer or banjo-fiddle sound
For right now I'll watch these leaves come down Chorus:
How peculiar liking old dead leaves against the sky
There is something more than meets the eye
Funny how I sit and watch these leaves come down from high
But these things are music to my eyes Such a pretty song I see, have I been beguiled
This day is not imagination's child
Every time the leaves come down I've just got to smile
For they sing a melody so mild Chorus But these things are music to my eyes From Appalachian Melody Back to Mark Heard Lyric Project

"Stephen Perkins: Drum Addictions"
by Matt Pieken
When Jane's Addiction dissolved early last yearprematurely, in most fans' eyesStephen Perkins probably was the only person alive who saw the bigger picture. Perry Farrell talked about filmmaking. The band's followers felt cheated. The greatest art-rock band since the 1970s called it quits after just three records. A fourth, regardless of its content, would have been huge. But Perkins says that that was a part of the problem. The band could do no wrong in the eyes of its fans, though the players themselves hadn't felt collectively right in quite some time. Simply, as a unit, Jane's Addiction became incapable of fulfilling its own creative impulses. To Perkins, it was like swimming for the surface with an anchor on your ankle. Despiteand maybe because oftheir best intentions, there was no fourth album in them to make. Perkins resurfaces this past year on the funk-rock offering from the band Infectious Grooves, a spinoff of Suicidal endencies. But Perkins still had a grasp of the bigger picture; it just took him a while to get it in focus.

the selections:
Roland says that the theme of I Talk With The Spirits came to him one Sunday while on his way to a rehersal. Its inspiration and feeling is devotional. The theme is sounded twice by flute, wordless voice, and vibes out of strict tempo separated by Kirk's solo cadenza. The ending finds Walter Perkins applying his mallets to a West Indian steel drum. The affecting melody of the theme struck me as having the character to a Japanese song, but Roland disclaimed any Oriental association and added that it was composed before his tour in that country last summer. For Serenade To A Cuckoo , a typically Kirkian bit of humorous swing, Roland produced a clock with cuckoo in working order from his bag of musical oddities. The wooden bird, Kirk informed us, was given to him by two young boys who advised him als o that every musician ought to have one. Roland adds that the cuckoo has a habit of popping out of his door to peep his song unexpectedly during practice or rehersal at the Kirk appartmentand this is what gave him the idea for the tune. The bird has his say on the introduction and the quartet is off on a medium-tempoed swinger with a 32-bar (two 16-bar sections) chorus in a minor key. Roland uses a North African hollow wooden flute on the lead chorus onlya dark-toned native instrume nt given him by Bill Keck and singer-arranger Dave Lambertand returns to the conventional C-flute for his improvised solo. Parlan has a good contribution and the rhythm section gets a gliding, unified beat going here. After the "out" chorus the cuckoo h as the final word.

Rebirth of Brö
The Ink is Gone [Brö 3]
Still Quite Popular After All These Years [Brö 4]

Brötzmann has an uncanny facility for establishing and sustaining resilient rapport with drummers. First came Sven-Åke Johansson as the engine room on his earliest recordings. Then Han Bennink signed on as the combustible rhythmic tinder for his trios of the late 60s and early 70s. Louis Moholo arrived at the close of the latter decade, joining bassist Harry Miller in what many consider Brötzmann's most satisfying small group. The dawn of the 90s heralded a solidifying of Chicago ties and the blossoming of his relationship with Hamid Drake. Since then he's teamed with Peter Uuskyla, Michael Wertmüller, Nasheet Waits, Frank Samba and several of others in an ongoing series of highly galvanic encounters. The relaunch of Brötzmann’s Brö imprint and the subsequent release these two recent entries place precise emphasis on his acumen at selecting felicitous percussive partners. In line with the label’s earlier incarnation releases ( For Adolphe Sax and Machine Gun ) both albums are LP only. The format offers both frugality (neither album cracks the 40-minute marker) and plenty of sleeve-space for Brötzmann’s signature graphics. Each is pressed on weighty 180-gram vinyl and housed in sturdy silk-screened cardboard sleeves custom-crafted to enlarge vinyl mavens’ eyes to the circumference of saucers.

    CAMPUS NEWS
Holiday greetings Dear Faculty and Staff: As we enter this special time of year, Gail and I send our warmest wishes to you and your families for a joyous and memorable holiday season. All of us can be grateful for so much: for being a part of a caring University family, educating and nurturing talented young people, guiding the progress of our institution, and contributing to the larger community. I am extremely grateful to the faculty and staff for their enduring dedication in making SMU a better place in which to learn and to serve. We know that during these times of uncertainty, there will be challenges ahead, both for our University and for our nation. What is certain is that we will draw upon our considerable strengths, not only to persevere but also to continue our progress.

The Gap Band The Gap Band II ... Love At Your Fingatips Formed in the early 1970s, the Gap Band was a Tulsa, Oklahoma soul/funk outfit fronted by three Wilson brothers: Charles, Ronnie and Robert. When I was a kid, I read that they intended to fill in the "gap" between Sly Stone and P-Funk , but apparently that's a fabrication: they were named for a Tulsa intersection. Anyway, they started out following in 's footsteps, and later relied heavily on P-Funk gimmicks like non sequitur While I rarely recommend greatest hits compilations, this is one of those bands with some great hit singles and a lot of dull album tracks. Get a greatest hits collection and a "Jam The Motha" 45 and you've got all you need. Unless Mr. Fonkee's fan site returns, the best you'll do is Soul Patrol's Gap Band page . (DBW) Lineup:

    Miscellaneous
This page is devoted to artists who were not one-hit wonders, but only one to a few songs by each of whom appeal to me. However, you may submit individual reviews of any of these artists if you wish. The artists are listed alphabetically. Of songs marked with an asterisk, I have 1980s or 90s stereo versions, not the originals.
    THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND
Ramblin' Man (4:46) - Thanks to the lyrics, this is a country-rock song. But the ending instrumental is overly long, taking almost the entire second half of the song. We never heard THAT much ending instrumental on the radio, did we? I've even read that another song by the Allmans lasts nearly 23 minutes!
    AMERICA
A Horse With No Name (4:11) - The tempo is moderate. Sometimes, especially at the beginning, the drums and the guitar play somewhat softly. The desert heat may be burning the narrator's skin, but in the desert he finds a refuge from the rain and pain he is subjected to at home. For him, riding a nameless horse in the desert is paradise. I wonder, though, if he wants to GIVE the horse a namewhether it be Traveller, Trigger, Silver, or anything else.
    FRANKIE AVALON
Venus (original version 2:23; 1990s stereo version 2:35) - The tempo is slightly faster than the moderate speed in the original version I often hear on the radio. Since Venus is the Roman goddess of love, the narrator is sure that what he requests of her can't be too much for her to grant. All he wants is a girl who will give him, and to whom he can give, a lifetime of love. The original version doesn't fade out, but this one does. Frankie had more hits, but this is the only one I ever hear on the radio.
