Fabrizio Formenti, 26 Ottobre 2003: Profondo Mystic River di Clint Eastwood In "Mystic River" le scene sono disegnate (grazie alla solita regia discreta di Eastwood) in modo da far pesare ciò che i personaggi dicono, dando così ampio risalto alla bravura di Sean Penn e consentendo al legnoso Tim Robbins di ben figurare in un ruolo cruciale. Eastwood è uno di quei registi che preferisce togliere visivamente qualcosa piuttosto che aggiungere, ma anche qui riesce comunque a confezionare un paio di sequenze a parer mio straordinarie: la scena notturna del "confronto" fra Jimmy e Dave di fronte al fiume Mystic è una perla registica. Pur non senza difetti (l'utilizzo che viene fatto del personaggio della moglie di Sean, ad esempio), questo è un buonissimo film. A mio modo di vedere, comunque, sensibilmente inferiore a quello che ha fruttato ad Eastwood l'Oscar per la regia nel '93 (il già citato "Gli Spietati", quattro Oscar in totale tra cui quello per il miglior film), ma degno degli elogi ricevuti all'ultimo Festival di Cannes. The film offers a grimy portrait of Hollywood players and wanna-bes (mostly the latter), with Penn doing an over-the-top, confused paranoiac stuffed with cocaine, Spacey his coldly sarcastic housemate, and Palminteri an obsessed, short-tempered ex-con who wants to be an actor. The characters flamboyantly support and abuse one another, and except for a brief few scenes in a bar, most of the action takes place in a hilltop ranch house. Anna Paquin has a disturbing role as a teen runaway who nonchalantly trades her body for a place to stay; Robin Wright, Gary Shandling, and Meg Ryan have odd walk-on parts.
