General Patton Memorial Museum in Ettelbruck, Luxembourg The "General Patton Memorial Museum" was officially inaugurated on July 7, 1995. The museum is dedicated to General George S. Patton Jr., commander of the 3rd U.S. Army, whose troops liberated the town of Ettelbruck for good on December 25, 1944. More than 1000 photographs and documents bear witness to the German invasion of May 1940, the period of occupation of the Grand Duchy, and the liberation of the country by American troops in September 1944. A second part of the museum shows numerous weapons, parts of arms and equipment that was discovered and/or excavated in the recent past on the Ardennes battlefields. Another section of the museum is dedicated to the Aerial war and battles in the skies over Luxembourg. Notable American Unitarians Kenneth Leo Patton Photo by Wayne Armstrong Kenneth Leo Patton (1911-1994), identifed as one of the major poets and a prophet of contemporary liberal religion, was a voice for a poetic, naturalistic humanism at a time when most humanists were defining a religion of reason. Minister and scholar David Bumbaugh has summed up Patton's work: "It was he who taught a monotone rationalism how to sing; it was he who taught a stumble-footed humanism how to dance; it was he who cried 'Look!' and taught our eyes to see the glory in the ordinary." Born in Three Oaks, a small town in western Michigan, Patton lived his early years there with his mother, brother and maternal grandparents. He never knew his father. His family belonged to a strict Methodist church. He attended two church services on Sundays, morning and evening, and in between the adults allowed no secular amusements. He recalled hearing cheers and shouts from the neighboring baseball field on Sunday afternoons, wanting to join in but not allowed to go. When he was eight or nine Patton moved with his mother and brother to a working-class suburb of Chicago. There he graduated from high school, the first in the family to do so. He went on to junior college, working at night to finance art lessons on Saturdays. Thus began his lifelong passion for the visual arts. At the age of 20 he began writing poetry. He completed his college work at Eureka College, from which he received a B.A. in 1937.

It's the heart of the U.S. wine industry and a number of fine Pinot Noirs have been produced in the state. After further study and tasting, we concluded that Oregon offered a better environment for the difficult Pinot Noir grape. Oregon's Willamette Valley is blessed with the temperate growing conditions needed to ripen Pinot Noir to its fullest potential. With warm (but not overly hot) days and cool summer nights, the chances are high for the proper balance of sugar, acid and flavor at harvest. With the Willamette Valley selected as our destination, the search for a vineyard site commenced in 1994. PATTON, JR., (1885-1945), American general and tank commander, whose bold armored advance across France and Germany in 1944 and 1945 made a significant contribution to Allied victory in WORLD WAR II . He was born in San Gabriel, Calif., on Nov. 11, 1885, into a family with a long tradition of military service. He attended the Virginia Military Institute and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1909, when he was commissioned a 2d lieutenant in the 15th Cavalry. He graduated from the Mounted Service School, Fort Riley, Kans., in 1913, and a year later from the Advanced Course at the Cavalry School, Fort Riley. In 1916 he went as acting aide to Gen. John J. Pershing in the Mexican expedition, and in 1917 Pershing took him to France as commander of his headquarters troops. In November 1917, Patton was one of the first men detailed to the newly established Tank Corps of the United States Army and was assigned the task of organizing and training the 1st Tank Brigade near Langres, France. He led this unit in the St. Mihiel drive in mid-September 1918 and was wounded later in the month at the opening of the Meuse-Argonne offensive. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Distinguished Service Medal and promoted temporarily to the rank of colonel. In one scene Patton visits a hospital and notices that the doctors are not wearing helmets. He is told that they can not use their stethoscopes if they wear helmets. He tells them to drill holes in their helmets so they can. Cowardice was unnaceptable to Patton. He threatens to shoot a soldier in the hospital for refusing to get to the front and fight. Ultimately he has to apologize for this feat before his men. He only wished to shame the man into a state of courage he proclaims.
