Jernigan , Mission Specialists John M. Grunsfeld and Wendy B. Lawrence , and Payload Specialists Samuel T. Durrance and Ronald A. Parise readied the shuttle and ASTRO-2 to support 15 and a half days of astronomical observations. The Blue Team of crew members Jernigan, Lawrence and Durrance were on duty mornings aboard the spacecraft while their fellow crewmembers, called the Red Team, slept. The Red crew members took over duties at about 10:52 a.m. On Thursday, March 2, 1995 at 6 a.m. CST, STS-67 Payload Status Report # 01 states: (0/5:22 MET) Payload Commander Tammy Jernigan completed initial activation of the Spacelab pallet systems just before 4 a.m then began activating the Spacelab Instrument Pointing System. At 5:47 a.m., she raised it upright in the Shuttle cargo bay to face the heavens. Astronomers will use the pointing system to precisely track the stars and galaxies they study during the nearly 16-day mission.

In 1984, NASA selected him to serve as a payload specialist on the Astro mission series, and he flew on missions aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1990 and Endeavour in 1995. In addition to his flight crew responsibilities for the Astro program, Parise was involved in mission planning, simulator development and scientific data analysis during his 12 years as a payload specialist. Parise also provided engineering and development support for a number of significant space projects, including the Mir space station and the International Space Station. Among Parise's current projects for NASA is the development of advanced spacecraft communications and navigations systems, including groundbreaking research into the use of Internet protocols in space. Mark Brown Mark Brown joined CSC in August 2003, bringing more than 30 years of experience to the company. Brown spent 12 years as a NASA astronaut and manager, serving as a mission specialist on Columbia in 1989 and on Discovery in 1991. Monday July 1, 2002 Astronaut shares love of hams, space to radio club by MARLO BARNHART Ron Parise is an astronaut with two space shuttle trips to his credit. But he is especially proud to be a "ham" in space. Parise spent time Sunday with members of the Antietam Radio Association, not only to help them celebrate their 50 years as amateur radio operators, or hams, but to share his experiences as a colleague who got to extend his hobby into space. Ham radio operators use two-way radio stations to communicate with each other over radio waves that span the earth - and now beyond. "I was in communication with many ham radio operators while I was in space," Parise said. "It's been my hobby for many, many years even before I was an astronaut," he said. Parise was aboard Columbia in December 1990, and flew again in March 1995 on Endeavour. "I had a dream come true, not once but twice," he said. Sunday's event commemorated the beginning of the club on June 10, 1952. Still going strong, the Hagerstown-based group has about 85 members in four states who meet monthly at the Hagerstown Regional Airport. The highlight of the presentation Sunday came when Parise played a tape recording of a number of ham radio transmissions he had while in space. Even with the static and difficulty understanding the content, the excitement in the operators' voices was unmistakable.

Flight Day 6 Status Orbiter Status Mission Control Center Johnson Space Center Houston, TX STS-67 Status Report #10 Tuesday, March 7, 1995; 9:00 a.m. CST Earlier this morning, Blue Team members, Payload Commander Tammy Jernigan, Mission Specialist Wendy Lawrence and Payload Specialist Sam Durrance, continued with planned maneuvers of the orbiter in support of Astro-2 telescope observations of stars, galaxies and the interstellar medium. Investigations also continue for several middeck experiments. Earlier this morning, flight controllers did some troubleshooting after a circuit breaker tripped, cutting power to a portion of the Commercial Materials Dispersion Apparatus Instrumentation Technology Associates Experiment (CMIX). When Lawrence reset the circuit breaker on the middeck experiment and repowered the heater controller, ground controllers noticed a short. Lawrence subsequently was directed to turn off the heater, which maintained a slightly higher temperature (20 degrees Centigrade vs. 4 degrees Centigrade) for a portion of the Commercial Refrigerator Incubator Module (CRIM). three of the four experiment trays already had been chemically fixed, and scientists won't know until after landing what affect the heater loss will have on the samples. The CMIX/CRIM experiments which require no heat, referred to as the "cold" experiments, were unaffected by this event. Other activities performed by the Blue Team include a successful alignment of the inertial measurement units which was performed by Lawrence, and a 12-hour water dump using the flash evaporator system was initiated this morning.

Don't turn away from the challenge of space We need to send the breadth and depth of human insight to Mars DANIEL CATON Special to the Observer Published February 3, 2004 As the Earth returned this week to the same place in space where it was when the Columbia shuttle met its fate, our nation was turning its attention again to space. The two rovers we have on Mars metaphorically lift our spirits and suggest the opportunities that lie on the cosmic frontier. Our president has called for a return to the Moon and a manned mission to Mars. About as close as I will ever come to space travel is knowing my friend Ron Parise. Ron and I went to graduate school together at the University of Florida. Ron had left the rusting steel mills in Youngstown, Ohio, knowing that a real future was somewhere else. After grad school he joined Computer Sciences Corp., one of the myriad companies providing services to NASA. He intended to fly in space and got there by working on a project that would eventually fly in the shuttle and would need a payload specialist. Ron's first mission was to have been the next flight after the doomed Challenger launch.. Not deterred, he would eventually fly twice first on the eventually ill-fated Columbia. His second endeavor was on Endeavor.
