Astronaut (and Former Astronaut) Hams
To our readers: We have made every effort, through exhaustive research, to maintain as accurate a list as possible, of the many men and women who have amateur (ham) licenses among those who are or have been astronauts and/or cosmonauts.
We will always remember 01-FEB-2003, the date of the tragic loss of Space Shuttle Columbia over Texas, minutes before mission STS-107 was to end with a safe landing at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This catastrophe resulted in the deaths of seven astronauts, including three who were licensed radio amateurs: Mission Specialists Kalpana Chawla, ; David M. Brown, ; and, Laurel B. Clark,
Our sincerest condolences go out to the families of the Columbia Seven and their families.

All U.S. space shuttle flights have been launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida.
U.S. shuttles have made numerous night launches. The earliest were Challenger in August 1983, Atlantis in November 1985, Discovery in November 1989 and Atlantis in February 1990.
Columbia in June 1982 was the first shuttle to carry a secret military payload. Discovery in January 1985 was the first completely secret military flight. Atlantis in November 1990 was the last completely secret military shuttle payload. History of All Space Shuttle Flights by Year

    Meeting Held with ESA
On January 20, Phase 3D Project Leader and AMSAT-DL President, Dr. Karl Meinzer DJ4ZC met with ESA officials in Paris to discuss the possible launch of the Phase 3D satellite on the third test flight of the Ariane 5 launch vehicle, AR-503. Dr Meinzer gave a short presentation on AMSAT, its background and the history of cooperation it has enjoyed with ARIANE for many years. He then outlined the development history of Phase 3D and expressed a strong desire for a launch on AR-503. The ESA officials indicated willingness to consider a launch on AR-503, but made no commitments. They stated that they are also investigating the possibility of placing another payload on the mission that would preclude launching Phase 3D. Nevertheless, ESA did agree to to make an initial study of the configuration that would be associated with Phase 3D, were it to be launched on AR-503 along with several other payloads. They also agreed to investigate other possible launch opportunities, including ARIANE 4s. Another meeting is scheduled for the end of February, at which time it is hoped that more definite information will be available.

Kleinhaus, AA2DU, chose to live in Cortlandt Manor, New York, in 1993, was that the town's zoning ordinance did not restrict him from erecting a planned 120-foot tower. But by the time he closed the deal on his house in early 1994, a new zoning ordinance had gone into effect, one prohibiting towers above 35 feet. The town denied his application for the much taller tower, and Kleinhaus sued. But on March 20, the New York Supreme Court handed down a ruling annulling the Zoning Board of Appeal's decision as "irrational, arbitrary and capricious."

For 10 days the Space Shuttle Columbia streaked through the skies, and for the last 7 of those days, hams around the world were sent emotionally into orbit when they heard Dr. Garriott's voice break their squelches calling Earth-bound stations. But it was just the beginning. Amateur Radio had moved into its newest frontier, and it was there to stay. Sunday, February 2, 2003 Ohio astronaut: `Oh, my God'
By Amy Higgins and Dan Horn
    The Cincinnati Enquirer
Ohio astronauts Mark Brown and Ronald Parise know what it's like to sit in the cabin of the space shuttle Columbia as the ship plunges through the Earth's atmosphere, traveling 18 times faster than the speed of sound. They have felt the extreme heat of re-entry through the faceplates of their spacesuits, and they have watched pieces of the shuttle's heat shield fly past the window as the ship's exterior glowed a brilliant orange. "You see behind you the fiery contrail," Brown said Saturday. "You're very much aware of what's going on." More than anyone, Brown and Parise know the risks associated with a shuttle mission. And yet they were as shocked as the rest of the nation Saturday as they watched Columbia break apart during re-entry. Parise, who flew on Columbia in 1990, said he turned on the television Saturday morning expecting to see the shuttle and its crew safely on the ground in Florida. Instead, he watched video images of the shuttle's remains falling to Earth from 200,000 feet. "I just thought, `Oh, my God,'" said Parise, originally of Warren, Ohio. "I didn't know what happened, but it looked bad."
