25 NEW FACES
OF INDIE FILM 2003
PHOTO: RICHARD KERN 16 Ghazi Albuliwi Ghazi Albuliwi, the son of Jordanian immigrants, grew up in a largely Italian Catholic neighborhood in south Brooklyn. He majored in media and communication and minored in political science at Hunter College. "I was doing standup comedy at night," he recalls. "and leading a double life that was about to freight-train. "After college I spent a year not really doing anything. I was staying home watching soaps during the day and renting a lot of movies – low-budget films like Laws of Gravity and The Brothers McMullen. I thought it might be interesting to do a movie based on my life – my comedy routines dealt a lot with my life, religion and politics – and I figured I just needed a camera and sound." Albuliwi was 22 at the time. Two years later he completed the screenplay to West Bank Brooklyn. Set in Borough Park – which, he says, "has the same feel to it as Israel, with Orthodox Jews and Muslims, mosques and synagogues, side by side" – the film tells the story of four Arab Americans struggling, often hilariously, to navigate a path between the competing demands of tradition and assimilation. Produced and directed by Albuliwi, who also plays one of the four main characters, West Bank was shot on Super 16mm over 14 days for $39,000 and was completed just prior to 9/11. The film was recently acquired by CAVU Pictures, which plans a theatrical release in February 2004.

Working Magic With Warlock:
An Interview with Greg Pak on his new Marvel project...
Should we call him HIM? Writer/Director Greg Pak had been kind enough to let me interview him on his outstanding feature film Robot Stories . When news of Pak, along with artist Charles Adlard, reviving Warlock for Marvel Comics came across the news desk at the Fanboy Planet office, we went back to one of our favorites and asked him a few questions on his next big project. Fanboy Planet: Greg Pak: It is indeed a lifelong dream. I've been a comics fan and a cartoonist almost as long as I can remember somewhere in my parents' house there are two comics I drew at the age of three or four the first starring Superman and the second involving a lonely dragon who "went electric." Over the past year, I've been working with various editors at Marvel trying to find a project that would click with me as a writer. It's incredibly exciting for me to have it all actually happening. And yes, I requested that the

Interview with Greg Pak
Robot Stories
May 13, 2004 Greg Pak grew up in Dallas, acted in the theatre and performed on stage doing improv comedy. This is his first feature film behind the camera as well as his debut in front of the camera. As a filmmaker, Greg considers himself a New Yorker, because that's where he studied filmmaking at NYU and continues to do most of his work, but if you ask where he's from, he's from Dallas - it's where he grew up and where he collected his first robot toys. Question: Why did you choose to tell these stories in terms of robots? Greg: I guess first and foremost because I grew up with robots, playing with the toys that you see in the movie, watching robot movies. I was 8 when Star Wars came out. I was a big fan of those giant robot stories from Japan, a big fan of Ray Bradbury and "Twilight Zone", just science fiction in general.
As an adult filmmaker and storyteller, I started thinking about these stories. I realized that robots are compelling for another reason, which is that when you talk about robots seriously, or when you talk about artificial intelligence seriously, you end up asking the same kind of questions which make for good drama in general. If you're talking about a thing becoming sentient, trying to understand what it's doing in the world, the big questions are the same questions we all ask: Who am I? What am I doing here? What is this thing called love? What's my purpose in the world? It became a compelling way to tell stories.

From ‘Robot’ to ‘Warlock’ Filmmaker Greg Pak Makes Comic Book Debut at Marvel
By Philip W. Chung, Special to AsianWeek, Oct 01, 2004
At this year’s Comicon International event in San Diego, Marvel Comics announced that Warlock, a classic title from the past, would be resurrected and reinvented for a new generation of readers … and written by a name new to the world of comics — Greg Pak.
Or as Joe Quesada, the Marvel editor-in-chief, says of Pak, “(He’s) the best Marvel Comics writer you haven’t read anything from ... yet.”
Although Pak may be new to comics, he has already made a name for himself in the world of independent filmmaking. His science-fiction feature Robot Stories has been touring the country for the better part of a year to critical and commercial success.
In fact, it was his work on that film that led him to the editors at Marvel. Pak’s agent heard that the comic powerhouse was looking for new writers so she sent them the screenplay of Robot Stories as a writing sample, to positive feedback.
“Then Marvel editor Cory Sedlmeier saw Robot Stories when it screened at the Cinema Village in New York,” Pak remembers. “He liked the way I dealt with artificial intelligence in the film and asked if I might be interested in working on a comic book which would explore the story of an artificially created superhero. And six months later, here we are!”

Hey, amigos. My good friends and colleagues Peter Olsen and Josh Apter co-directed a movie called "Kaaterskill Falls" which opens this coming Wednesday, June 5, in New York City. I didn't work on the film (although I designed their first website and lent 'em my camera for pick ups), but I highly encourage everyone to go see it. Here are the deets: "Kaaterskill Falls"

Sat./Sun. - 6:15, 8, and 9:45 p.m.
Mon./Tues. - 6:15 and 10:15 p.m. Inspired by Roman Polanski's "Knife in the Water," the film tells the story of a bickering couple from Manhattan who pick up a hitchhiker on a trip to the country. Sexual tension, physical danger, and moral quandries ensue. The film was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards, including the John Cassavettes Award (for a film made for under $500,000) and the Debut Performance Award (for the entire three person cast). So you should pay money to see the film for its quality and entertainment value.

But the tiny budget hasn't slowed the film, which has won more than 20 festival awards and is now beginning a national tour.
