Greg Pak rides the Asian American film wave with Robot Stories
BY JASON WOO Greg Pak is a busy man. The writer/director of the indie breakout Robot Stories , a “science fiction from the heart,” has been traveling so much for the past year and a half to promote his debut feature that he barely has time to catch his breath.
An accomplished writer, Pak’s screenplay Rio Chino won the 2002 IFP Market Pipedream Screenwriting Award and a 2003 Rockefeller Media Arts Fellowship. Pak also wrote the screenplay for MVP, a feature film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this past January. Also a long-time filmmaker, Pak has directed several shorts such as “All Amateur Ecstasy” and “Fighting Grandpa” that have won awards and were screened at film awards around the world. Winning over critics and audiences alike for Robot Stories , while garnering over 20 film festival awards, Pak was named by Filmmaker Magazine as one of the top 25 filmmakers to watch in 2003.

Filmmaker Greg Pak wants you to see his movie, Robot Stories Robot Stories is currently playing in New York and Washington D.C., and opens March 12 in Los Angeles (with more cities to follow). How's it going? Very well, thank you very much. How was opening weekend in NYC? www.robotstories.net Tell us a little bit about yourself... I'm a thirty-something Korean American hapa haole who grew up in Texas and studied political science at Yale and history at Oxford before going to NYU Grad Film and becoming an independent filmmaker. I have glasses and a beard and these days I'm usually wearing a big red coat. What inspired you to make Robot Stories ? Why robots? If you had to sell this movie to some guy on the street, how would you describe it? Like most independently released films, you're operating on what you've described as a "miserably small distribution budget." What's the key to marketing this film? Could you have done it without the internet? The key to marketing the film was figuring out what our target audiences were and how to get to 'em. The festival circuit was essential for that. I'd always know that two of our big target audiences were twenty and thirty-something Asian Americans and science fiction fans. Our experiences at Asian American and science fiction festivals confirmed that. But we played dozens of other festivals at which general audiences responded incredibly well. As wonderful white-haired ladies kept telling me how much they loved the movie, I began to realize that the film could really click with traditional arthouse cinema goers, which is a typically older and whiter crowd.

Home Articles Humans Robots ... Account Robot Stories - Greg Pak Interview Posted 4 Jun 2004 at 19:05 CDT by steve Robot Stories is a low budget movie billed as " science fiction from the heart ". The collection of four Bradbury-style short stories is making the rounds of art house theaters around the country. Robot Stories has proven so popular in Dallas , Texas, where it's showing right now that the run has been extended another week. I got a chance to talk to Greg Pak , the writer and director, after a recent screening and he agreed to answer a few questions for the robot geeks here at robots.net. Read on for the full interview. Robots.net: I've found that robot builders, whether professionals or hobbyists, seem to enjoy arguing over the definition of the word "robot". By the most restrictive definition, "Robot Stories" included only one robot, in "My Robot Baby". We could call it three robots if we stretch the definition to include the two androids in "Machine Love". A further stretch to include toys brings in "The Robot Fixer". Including humanoid holograms would allow us to include the last story, "Clay". Can you provide a one sentence definition of what the word "robot" means to you? What part, if any, did a specific definition of the word play in your vision for "Robot Stories"? Greg Pak: Excellent question. I'd define a robot as an artificially created entity which can make its way through the world without a human operator. Extra points for its being constructed of inorganic or non-biological elements. So yes, the mechanical robot baby fits the definition most literally. The robot toys in the second story are representations of such strictly defined robots, and they fly in a dream sequence, so we get away with that one. The android office workers in the third story are also robots according to my definition they may look organic, like the flesh-and-blood replicants of "Bladerunner," but I imagine them as constructed of chips and silicone and plastic and metal, and they're powered by the same G9 processor as the robot baby. The big cheat comes in "Clay," which features no real robots at all, but we get away with it thematically because the story involves artificial or inorganically-based intelligence.

Now 35, Pak has made 14 films. His latest, meatiest work is Robot Stories , a collection of four short dramas set in a future when robots mingle with humans. Its cast includes, among others, Tamlyn Tomita, Sab Shimono, James Saito and Greg Pak himself. It treats the meaning of being human adroitly enough to have won 15 awards, including the prestigious 2002 Hamptons International Film Festival prize for best screenplay.
Greg Pak confers with actor Eisa Davis on the "Clay" segment of Robot Stories Pak's preferred method of social criticism is transposing the human condition onto an inverted social terrain, thereby showing the absurdity of commonplace assumptions. This technique is crystalized in his earlier Asian Pride Porn , a short satire about sexual stereotyping which elevates Pak's deft satiric touch by casting M Butterfly playwright and director David Henry Hwang as a macho porn director.

PAGE 3 OF 3 GS: Do you see a large influx of Asians into the ranks of independent filmmakers?
GP: You bet. It's been great having Robot Stories out on the festival circuit at the same time as Eric Byler ( Charlotte Soemtimes ) and Justin Lin ( Better Luck Tomorrow ). And there are dozens, if not hundreds, of upcoming independent Asian American filmmakers. My friend Michael Kang just shot his first feature The Motel, which should set the world on fire next year. And filmmakers like Johanna Lee and Alice Liu are on the verge of getting their first features into production. Not to mention folks like Sam Chen and Ham Tran and Dean Yamada whose short films are winning awards right and left.
GS: Do you see Hollywood as becoming more open to Asian-themed projects?
GP: Well, there's a long tradition of Hollywood movies set in Asia starring white actors.

AMWD: You’re half Korean-American and half white. Now some so-called half Asian-Americans like for example Keanu Reeves, Russell Wong, and yourself, chose to put their Asian-American identity more up front more than others. For example, Keanu Reeves doesn’t really talk much about his Asian background. Was it your conscious decision to position yourself more as an Asian-American filmmaker? GP: If you’re a mixed race actor and someone wants to cast you as a Latino or if someone wants to cast you in a non-racially specific role, then I think it would be a very rare person who would say no to that. One, because actors just want to work, and two, because actors are very up for different kinds of challenges. I’m sure there are many mixed race actors who have taken different kinds of roles just because it’s a good challenge. I think it would be great to work with Keanu Reeves on a role where his Asian ethnicity could come out in some way with a character. To actually use Keanu Reeves in an Asian-American story or as an Asian-American character, I’d love the opportunity to do that. Just maybe that will happen someday.
