Home Mouse : GREG PAK Greg Pak studied political science at Yale, history at Oxford, and film production at New York University. His award-winning short films MR. LEE, MOUSE, and FIGHTING GRANDPA have been screened in festivals across the country, including Shorts International Film Festival, New York; NYU First Run Film Festival; and the San Francisco International Asian-American Film Festival.
Questionnaires were sent to each artist participating in REEL NEW YORK Season Three. Below are the artist's written responses.
Greg Pak
Mouse
What compelled you to make this piece? How does this work address issues that are important to you or close to your heart?
I had three goals in making MOUSE: I wanted to explore an act of everyday cowardice; I wanted to present Asian American characters in non-stereotypical situations; and I wanted to play with horror movie conventions in an unexpected domestic context.
From MOUSE. How does living in the New York metropolitan area affect your work?
I love New York. Every day I bump into someone else's drama. Just this weekend, I overheard a couple flirting outside my window, saw a man weeping on the subway, and watched a tyrannical child scolding her mother on the train. I don't know any other town which provides such a constant, public display of private pain and humor. It's a great place for a writer to live.
In including your work in REEL NEW YORK, do you think your piece in any way pushes the medium of television, or the viewing audiences' expectations of that medium?

by Jonathan W. Hickman
Greg Pak on the set with Sab Shimono An Interview with Greg Pak by Jonathan W. Hickman Greg Pak’s Robot Stories is modern science fiction, which recognizes that special effects alone do not a great film make. Focusing on four very personal human stories, his film is small drama in a high tech environment. Pak’s futuristic visions are expertly crafted on a limited budget. Greg and I exchanged emails. EI: Why Robots? Are you a fan of science fiction? GREG PAK: I'm a sucker for genre pictures in general - I'll watch all kinds of awful science fiction, just as I'm always happy to watch a Western or gangster movies. I even had fun at "The Postman." But the kind of science fiction I most love uses fantastic settings as a venue for exploring utterly human stories. My childhood hero was Ray Bradbury. I remember how excited I was when I learned he was born on August 22 - I was born on the 23rd. And why robots? 'Cause robots are cool. On a deeper level, robots are enormously compelling to me as a writer because the questions which surround the idea of artificial intelligence and digital consciousness are the same fundamental questions which have always dogged us: "Who am I? What is my purpose here? Who are you? What is this thing you humans call love? Why am I crying?" Thinking about robots gives us a fresh and compelling way to think about the human condition, which is what "Robot Stories" is all about.

Android Dreams Greg Pak's debut feature film, Robot Stories , examines the connections between humans and machines in an age of burgeoning technology. In this, the film treads familiar ground, covered recently by A.I. , tracking the tragedy of a very smart robot treated as an expendable "pet" by its human masters. Like Spielberg's almost great film, Pak's suggests that, while our understanding of technology may be evolving, our connections to each other remain tentative at best. Pak's film (divided into four sections) is, like A.I. , less interested in science fiction than metaphor, suggesting that human interactions with robots reflect the ways that humans interact with each other. All the segments focus on outsiders, whether they are women not quite ready for motherhood ("My Robot Baby"); sculptors who want to die rather than have their brains scanned into a computer, like others in this invented future (the dreary, pretentious "Clay"); androids at work and falling in love ("Machine Love"); or geeky, misunderstood young men ("The Robot Fixer").
