Entertainment Minute Movies Haiku Fu Comix Resources Filmmakers Network Film Database About the Site Manifesto Contact Staff/Credits Five films I can't forget By Greg Pak, filmmaker and editor of AsianAmericanFilm.com Still from "Hisao" by Masahiro Sugano Hisao (Masahiro Sugano, 1997) 9 min. Distributed by QuickBand Sugano uses photo animation to tell the story of a flower shop employee who sleeps, wakes up, eats, works, plays the guitar, and periodically gets struck by arrows coming from nowhere. Deeply strange, strangely moving. I've seen this short about a dozen times, and every time I love it. Kung Pao Chicken (Richard Kim, 1998) 6 min. Distributed by NAATA Online at Atomfilms.com High-larious short telling the story behind those "How to eat with chopsticks" diagrams on chopstick wrappers. Great pace and timing, thoroughly justified exaggerated camera movement and dutch angles. I laugh out loud every time I see that cook clutch his chest. New Freedom (Camera Obscura, 1980) 8 min.

    "Extremely great."
    - Harry Knowles, AintItCoolNews.com "Pak sets himself up as a filmmaker to watch, a creator of intelligent, thoughtful stories that refuse to be contained by traditional definition. Which is exactly what we need in our movies."
    HollywoodBitchslap.com
"A tremendously powerful set of vignettes. Writer/director Greg Pak uses four stories about robots to create wonderfully human moments. The stories are quick and to the point. The visually compelling and well-acted stories do not exist in the same world; tied together by theme, each is its own stirring narrative. Robots as toys, robots as children, robots as office tools, and robots as deceased loved ones teach the humans around them various lessons without hammering the audience. Quiet subtlety abounds throughout these terrific shorts. Even the opening credits animation is a wonderfully self-contained story. Another must-see. "

    An Interview with
    Filmmaker Greg Pak
by Jeffrey Yamaguchi / June 6, 2002 Asian Porn Pride All Amateur Ecstasy ? It would seem that with titles like that, you would know exactly what to expect from filmmaker Greg Pak. But don't jump to the obvious conclusions. Yes, the titles are meant to draw you in, but they are not just some cheap marketing ploy. These are smart, sexy fun short films with high-roller payoff. These two films have garnered Pak quite a bit of attention, Asian Pride Porn even landing him on the cover of Time Magazine Asia two years ago. But these are just two of Pak's projects. He's made a dozen shorts over the years, and he has just completed his first feature film Robot Stories . But that's not all. Pak runs several websites, including AsianAmericanFilm.com , which provides the latest scoop about Asian American film and filmmakers, and FilmHelp.com , an advice site all about low-budget filmmaking. I interviewed Pak about all of his filmmaking efforts, everything from how he gets the word out about his films to how the web has influenced his filmmaking. Pak also discusses his new film Robot Stories , which will soon enter the film festival circuit and begin chasing down the independent film dream.

Greg directed the short films "Fighting Grandpa," "Asian Pride Porn," "All Amateur Ecstasy," "Po Mo Knock Knock," and "Mouse," which have won awards and screened in festivals around the world. G5: What got you interested in robotics and the future integration of robotics into society? I've been interested in robots just about as long as I can remember being interested in anything I grew up reading classic science fiction short story writers like Ray Bradbury and Harlan Ellison, playing with robot toys, and watching science fiction movies. As I got older, I began to appreciate robot fiction on a deeper level when you talk seriously about robots and artificial intelligence, you end up talking about things that matter deeply to anything that thinks, learns, and feels. G5: How do you see popular culture affecting the public’s perception of technology?

Greg Pak gets interviewed by Comic Foundry on writing and his upcoming work on the sequel to Neil Gaiman's
I've never made a point of picking projects which might be perceived as controversial. But one of the challenges of working in mainstream comics is the fact that almost every character comes with a history and background beloved to thousands of fans. But I like to think of that as a positive thing – a character’s history is what makes him or her deep and compelling. So working within continuity is a gift – it provides a million ways to make a story deeper and more resonant. posted by Hisham Zubi at 5:24 PM comments

NEW YORK, NY, USA - Winner of over 23 film festival awards, director Greg Pak's anthology of four robot-related science fiction stories makes for an impressive debut. Taking a decidely indie direction, Pak gives an insider spin to his science fiction. In one tale, "My Robot Baby," a couple (Tamlyn Tomita and James Saito) must care for a robot baby before adopting a human child; in "Machine Love," an office worker droid (Pak) learns that he, too, needs love with unpredictable and humorous results. In the most fatalistic and philosophic story, "Clay," a dying sculptor (Sab Shimono) choses between natural death and digital immortality. Only one tale isn't really scifi "The Robot Fixer," tells of a mother (Wai Ching Ho) who tries to reach her dying comatose son by completing his toy robot collection.
