Alberto Cassani, 12 Novembre 2003: Forte Quel pomeriggio di un giorno da cani di Sidney Lumet Uno dei più bei film di rapina di tutti i tempi, "Quel pomeriggio di un giorno da cani" è tratto da una storia vera accaduta nel caldissimo agosto 1972, per quanto siano leciti i dubbi sulla veridicità di alcuni risvolti della trama. Il lavoro dello sceneggiatore Frank Pierson fu comunque così buono da meritarsi un Oscar (curiosamente, per la sceneggiatura originale). At 62, the age when most men are preparing for retirement, Pacino is up to his neck in work. He has five movies this year alone. He's played a jaded cop to huge success in Insomnia. He's a failed director who makes a big come-back via a digitally created actress in the comedy Simone, which is in theatres this Friday. Later this year, he'll be seen as a CIA guy in The Farm and a flak in People I Know. Chinese Coffee, which played at the Toronto Film Festival, is said to be set for release this year. Pacino was also involved in the filmed version of the Tony Award-winning play Angels In America, playing Roy Cohn in a cast that includes Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, Jeffrey Wright and Mary Louise Parker. On the home front, Pacino has not one, but two toddlers to call his own with his partner, Beverly D'Angelo. Twins Anton and Olivia are 18 months old. Then there's his daughter Julie, who is almost 13, whose mom is Jan Tarrant. Julie, armed with a camcorder, is making like a fledgling filmmaker. It's all good.

Nell'inseguire la realizzazione dell'evento, simbolo della frenesia del sindaco-poliziotto nel gettare i delinquenti in gattabuia al minimo sospetto, Eli si imbatterà, fra voltafaccia e favori, squillo e telecamere-videogames, nei meandri di una società divisa in potenti clan che tramano sotto la superficie pulita e ordinata di New York. Produzione indipendente, con un cast eccezionale (non solo Al Pacino, ma una provocante Tea Leoni, Kim Basinger, splendida e soave, il redivivo Ryan O'Neal), People I know mostra fin dalle prime battute il coraggio di affrancarsi dallo stile narrativo hollywoodiano fatto di banali botta e risposta e un ritmo incalzante, in favore di scene lunghe e prolisse, il cui punto di vista e protagonista assoluto coincidono nel formidabile Al Pacino. Il film si basa quindi su due semplici assunti. Uno tematico: descrivere, su di uno sfondo di aperta polemica contro il sindaco Giuliani, la cinica e spietata alta società newyorkese. L'altro, stilistico: fare tutto ciò incentrando la visione sugli occhi di un personaggio onesto e di sinceri valori che vive per professione immerso in quel letamaio.
