A review by Gillian Puddle.
So much was familiar, yet the third Star One convention was subtly different from the previous two. The packed programme offered a great selection of things to see and do throughout the weekend, and yet the atmosphere was extremely relaxed.

Site Awards - reviewed by Louise Badsey by Harold Pinter - Starring Steven Pacey as Stanley (also starring Prunella Scales, Timothy West, Nigel Terry, Barry Jackson and Lisa Dulson) 17th April 1999 - Theatre Royal, Bath Being a Steven Pacey fan I was quite excited when my USA friend e-mailed me with details of Steven's new play "The Birthday Party". A few hours later I was phoning around a few friends and booking up tickets to see him down in Bath. We managed to get front row, middle tickets and so we could almost touch him - argghhh!! Well, OK, the actors didn't come that close to the edge of the stage, although I must say at one point they started to throw chairs around in the one fight scene and it was a bit worrying when all this furniture came towards us! Then enter Stanley! Steven Pacey dressed in grey trousers, blue and white stripey shirt, extremely dirty back and front (brown stains all over it) (buttoned to the top, so not showing off much chest, unfortunately!) - and a pair of blue cord slippers - no socks! His hair was extremely greasy/dirty and going grey! He also has the start of a bald spot on the top of his head, which unfortunately was not a wig! No nice, thick curly wurly hair I'm afraid! It was the part he was playing though - he was meant to look pretty awful and he did! He was meant to look unshaven, but you could see it was just make-up to look as if he had stubble - rather well done - but obvious to those sitting close enough that it was fake!

Site Awards starring Steven Pacey - reviewed by Louise Badsey Well, I've just been listening to a fantastic radio play - starring none other than Mr Pacey himself! Yes! I didn't even know it existed until a pen friend of mine mentioned it to me. The story is based on a Jeffrey Farnell novel (probably spelled wrong - I found this name at the beginning of the story). The first one is called "Black Bartlemy's Treasure" and is a pirate adventure, fully dramatised featuring Steven Pacey as Martin Conisby. Steven is the main character and also reads the story. What wonderful stuff indeed! He plays this amazingly heroic character, apparently 27 years old, who teams up with a group of pirates who are searching for Black Bartlemy's Treasure. Steven's character, Martin, is not interested in the treasure, but in vengeance against Brandon, Lady Brandon's father who killed his own father. For those of you who love the heroic side of Tarrant , then this play is a must! It's a very heroic swashbuckling, romantic story. Martin shoots bad guys with his pistol when he's not fighting off salty sea men with his rapier! (sorry....) Then he falls for Lady Brandon, the daughter of his sworn enemy! The romantic stuff gets a bit OTT at times, but if you can handle a few "Ooh, you're so strong!" and "Oh my love, I do care for you so..."'s then it's well worth the effort. The most bizarre bit for me was when Lady Brandon accused Martin of "betraying her trust" when he pulled her close for a quick snog! How anyone could complain about being snogged by Steven Pacey, is beyond me!

Paul Darrow and Steven Pacey panel
The first Saturday session was Paul Darrow and Steven Pacey whom Paul introduced as the non-show Glynis Barber; Steven played up to it beautifully with a falsetto and mince. They started by auctioning the coffee club sessions, Paul warning us that Michael Keating's table manners were appalling (totally untrue, incidentally). I bid for a ticket for coffee with Michael and was delighted to get one. Paul was in a pale blue suit with cream shoes of which he seemed inordinately proud, showing them off to us at intervals throughout the session and asking us if we liked them to everyone's amusement; he seemed hurt that we didn't. They were glossy and cream with heels and looked a bit like a court shoe designed for a middle-aged transvestite—sorry, Paul. I heard rumours that Janet Lees-Price (his wife) was hoping to auction them later. I didn't manage to get a photo of them, but Steve Rogerson has several on this page Steven and Blake's 7 : Steven was asked about City at the Edge of the World and said he didn't remember much about it but loved working with Colin Baker who was a "very funny man". Someone asked if he'd watched any episodes yet and he said he was waiting for the DVDs to come out. He looked disconcerted when everyone yelled that season 1 was out, and said he'd been busy doing things—like having lunch. He also said that he'd been told he made a better Deeta than Del.

Transcribed by Nicola Mody BRIAN Blake’s 7 ran from January 1978 to December 1981, fifty two glorious episodes. I’m Brian Lighthill, and Blake’s 7 was the first show I ever directed on TVseries 4, ‘Gold’ and ‘Orbit’. Now the final episode of the series was seen by over ten million viewers, and now, twenty years after the first series, this BBC radio special was recorded by many of the original cast to celebrate the anniversary. In conversation with Paul Darrow, I asked him: What do you think Avon thought of the rest of the crew? PAUL Generally speaking, I think that Avon was a loner, but was forced to have somebody fly the plane when he wasn’t therethe plane, I mean the spaceshipand also to cook the dinner and make the tea or whatever, and do his ironing, if you like. No, they had their functions, and as long as they performed their functions, he tolerated them. But if they didn’t, he’d kill them. BRIAN Do you think Avon was mad at the end of series 4?

Directed by Joe Harmston. Stanley lodges in a seaside boarding house owned by Meg and Petey Boles. One day, his peaceful, if mundane, existence is threatened by the arrival of two mysterious strangers.... After a national tour, a revival of Harold Pinter's 1958 play comes into the West End in a production that features Prunella Scales, Timothy West and Steven Pacey in the cast. The production is directed by Joe Harmston who directed two of the plays in 3 By Pinter at the Donmar Warehouse last year. The Birthday Party is now accepted as a 'modern classic', but when it was originally seen in London, at the Lyric Hammersmith, in May 1958 most of the critics hated it and the production lasted just one week. But in his review of the production, Harold Hobson, the Sunday Times critic, famously said "Mr Pinter, on the evidence of this work, possesses the most original, disturbing and arresting talent in theatrical London." London Premiere of Alan Ayckbourn's new play originally seen at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough in April 1997. This new comedy is a study of the effects of love, whether we can do without it, and, more importantly, once we have it, how we will do almost anything to hang onto it.... Barbara is resolutely single, having dedicated her life to her career as a secretary to the powerful city executive, Marcus. Her neat little world is as carefully and quietly organised as her neat little flat, with few distractions save the relentlessly cheerful Gilbert, who lives downstairs. However when an old school friend, Nicki, and her fiance, Hamish, arrive, her life is turned upside down and back to front! For Hamish and Barbara it is hate at first sight...or is it? This is a transfer from the Gielgud Theatre. The cast features Belinda Lang, Alexander Hanson, Caroline Harker and Adrian McLoughlin.

BY JEEVES (1996)
SYNOPSIS

By Jeeves takes place in a church hall where Bertie Wooster is scheduled to give a banjo recital. His faithful manservant Jeeves, a lover of music, steals the banjo, forcing Bertie to improvise with a dizzying tale full of romantic entanglements and mistaken identities involving his friends and their love interests. A musical created with Andrew Lloyd Webber. By Jeeves was rewritten and revised from Jeeves. The play opened the new Stephen Joseph Theatre and was described by the theatre as: "An almost entirely new musical." Proudly presenting an evening in the company of that celebrated raconteur, man about town, wit, bon viveur and banjo player extraordinaire, Bertram Wilberforce Wooster, Esq... Or so the published programme would have it. But, alas, even men of genius can have their plans thwarted. How can any banjo player, however gifted, begin to pluck a note when some philistine has stolen his instrument, by George? How can he possibly hope to entertain the eager throng until a replacement banjo arrives, by Jove? Is there no one to step in and snatch the charred streaky from the bonfire, by Jeeves? By Jeeves... (Stephen Joseph Theatre brochure copy, opening season 1996)
