Matt's Pasadena Convention Report msavelkoul01@gw.hamline.edu For those of you who don't know me, my name is Matt and I'm with the Xenaversity of Minnesota. www.xenaversity.com Here's my convention report (originally posted on the Xenaversity onelist): Friday, January 21, 2000 After about six hours of sleep in two days, I got up bright and early at 4:30 in the morning and packed and got ready to go, remembering to get all the compilation tapes for the guests and music videos and whatnot. I got to the airport pretty early and met Angie, her mom Karen, Patti, Amada, and Lizzy at the HHH terminal in Minneapolis. We were all taking the same flight. We hung out, started our "XENA CON" documentary (Amada brought a video camera), and Patti bought two Star Trek books. I was going to Pasadena because I created a bunch of Xena music videos that Creation used throughout the past year and a half and Gary rewarded me with four tickets to Pasadena. The flight out was uneventful, but the pilot did mention that there was a 71 degree temperature difference between LAX and MSP (something Gary Berman mentioned Friday at the Con to everyone). WOW! Flying over LA, looking at all the palm trees, swimming pools, traffic, and smog*we finally disembarked and were taken aback by the gorgeous LA winter weather. We also got to walk right by Air Force One, as the President had given a speech at Caltech that morning at 10:30 AM. We were supposed to meet a local XOMbie from Texas, Deborah, but our flight was delayed so we opted for a Taxi Shuttle to go to the Doubletree Inn, which was about 5 blocks from the Convention Center (I kept getting lost whenever I'd walk the 5 blocks by myself all weekend.) We stopped at the hotel room, met up with Amiee and Brian, and dropped our belongings off. We then waited for James to get into costume and if you thought the comments he got in the Chicago Hyatt were funny, too bad you weren't on the street to see what happened in Pasadena. Heads turned and accidents were nearly caused.

Thank you KT for allowing us to include your excellent coverage!
Creation dedicated this convention to Kevin Smith and the proceeds of many of the charity items were donated to his fund. They kicked off the con with a video homage to Kevin. It showed Kevin's whole career from when he was just a young pouty boy all the way up to being the God of War. I think Kevin got even more beautiful physically as he matured like Lucy, he's a classic beauty and just kept getting better and better to look at. Paris Jefferson Paris was charming and witty and, just like everyone else associated with Xena whom I've ever seen or read about, totally into self-deprecating humor. She told about meeting a Xena fan unexpectedly. She was out, without make-up, without any thought of being noticed. And this guy recognized her and said something like, "Oh, it's you! You know, you look ..." And Paris said, "I thought he was going to say, 'You look good even without make-up and nice clothes.' But what he said was, 'You look better with the helmet on.'" She claimed to find it highly insulting, but kept laughing about the audacious tactlessness of the comment as she told us about it.

XENA PASADENA 2002 COVERAGE Page 1 of 2
Click a picture to enlarge It was an extremely emotional weekend as guests, fans and the convention production team joined together as news of Kevin Smith's passing reached us all. The old adage "the show must go on" came into play and the convention was dedicated to Kevin's memory and to the start of fundraising for his family. Kevin's many appearances at past Creation events always were incredibly fun and joyous and it was in that spirit that the convention continued in a beautiful and loving way. We, as Kevin's friends and fans, could not imagine a better place to have spent that weekend. This one's for you, Kevin ! Lifelong friends Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi yuk it up on stage. They are amazing! When we thought of trying to put a "performance" together starring Claire and Hudson there was just no way we could ever imagine what those two would come up with. Talk about delivering the goods: Hollywood producers take note: these ladies are hot! William Gregory Lee, Xena's Virgil announced his engagement

Xena, how come my name is never on the big sign? Pasadena 2003 Friday at the Con (click on the pics for full photo or series of photos) Our plane was delayed in Orlando, something about a sticky valve and rebooting the electrical system on board (which they did. Disconcerting, but all was fine). Unfortunately, it delayed our arrival, so I missed the first Video Mix in which they showed videos produced by the fans, and I only caught the tail end of Paris Jefferson's panel. No report on what she said. Sorry. She looked fabulous, BTW. After Paris, a Blooper Reel was shown, and then Tim Omundson came on. I love Tim. He's always such a delightful fellow. He's funny, quick witted, handsome, charming...you get the idea. He showed us a picture of his beautiful daughter, talked a bit about being a father, and how great it is to work on Judging Amy with Tyne Daly. He also hinted that he may be doing Love Letters with Renee in London at the Strong Women of SciFi con in August. Someone pointed out to Tim that the April Cruise is also billed as Strong Women of SciFi, and wondered how he qualified, to which Tim responded with his best woman of SciFi impression. Funny. He ended his panel by playing "Eli's Blues" on the harmonica. All of the guests signed the large banners to each side of the stage , and as Tim signed under his picture, Adam (our MC), declared him an Honorary Woman of Sci Fi. (grin)

Balanced Excitement
CHAKRAM The miracle has happened. Xena and Gabrielle are both back from the dead, and everybody is totally amazed. However, something is very wrong. Through the joy, Amarice returns the two halves of Xena's chakram, the weapon that broke Xena's back and led to the death of both our heroines. Xena does not recognize it at all! Not only does Xena not recognize her characteristic weapon, she doesn't even remember that she was a warrior! Xena has become a sweet, gentle, even childlike person devoid of any hint of aggressiona soul that glows with light! Thus, Chris Mannheim launches a story that demonstrates the need for a balanced life, a concept that she began to explore last season in Paradise Found. Unlike Paradise Found however, Chakram is a sprawling, exciting action tale, while Paradise Found was a claustrophobic, fiber optic probe of Xena's soul, Chakram is the need for balance in action. It is a strong argument for the fact that behavior lay along a continuum from active evil, to passive goodness. The symbol of this is Xena's Chakram, for it is the Chakram of Darkness, one of a pair of unknown origin or manufacture. Its mate is the Chakram of Light. It is our gang's quest to keep the Chakram of Light out of the hands of the war gods AND get balance back into Xena's personality is the mission all are on. Two gods want the Chakram of Light, Ares (played wonderfully by Kevin Smith per usual) and Kel a War God of the Italian mountain area. In the teaser, Kel had used forced a monk to a temple to steal for him the CoL for he is terrified of the weapon. The CoL can kill a god. The CoL is on the dark half of a circular altar carved in the likeness of the Yin and Yang, the symbol of balance. The space for the CoD lay empty. Legend says that the completely pure in heart are the only people who can take the weapon from the altar. The monk proves to be totally human and thus not completely pure and is burned to a cinder as a result.

58. Article - Xena Magazine #11 - Kevin Smith - Aug 2000

"Immortal Combat.."
Xena Magazine #11 - Kevin Smith talks to K Stoddard Hayes
Source: Titan Official Xena Magazine #11
Date: August 2000
Kevin Smith describes himself as "a really staunch Cantabrian," referring to the region of New Zealand`s South Island where he was raised. This is, he says, an incredibly important characteristic. "It means you possess the values and qualities of the early pioneering stock, all the things that have become lost in the hurly burly modern world." When he talks about his addiction to rugby, the time he spent as a young man working jobs like the hay harvest, or the hard drinking parties where he and other youths dared each other to run through a bonfire or jump from a roof, being Cantabrian seems like it might be a bit of a macho thing, very suitable for the man who plays the God of War. Listen a little longer, and you soon realize that being Cantabrian is much more about hard work, friendship and pretensions than it is about proving that you`re tougher, stronger, or have a bigger ego than the next guy. For one thing, no macho Clint Eastwood wannabe could tell so many great stories in which he is the butt of the joke. And though Smith is a star in his own country, he doesn`t have a star`s ego. Last year he was nominated for Best Actor in the TV Guide Television Awards in New Zealand for his role in the mini series Lawless. He lost the award to Cliff Curtis, who is known to US audiences for his appearance in films like Three Kings. When I ask about it, Smith`s response is a deprecating chuckle. "I`m not really Awards Boy," he says. "I`ve kind of always done popular sort of stuff. I`m ubiquitous. Whenever I get a nomination for something, it`s like, `Oh, cool!` I was pretty happy to lose that to him."

HBO's 'Deadwood' rich with gold and grime
March 26, 2004 BY PHIL ROSENTHAL TELEVISION CRITIC
It was good for a laugh when Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles" took into account the comic reality of all those Western scenes in which cowboys sit around the campfire eating beans and drinking coffee. Writer David Milch ("NYPD Blue") uses the reality of just how dirty, smelly and altogether nasty the Old West was for darker, more dramatic purposes in his new historical fiction series "Deadwood," an unrushed, thoroughly fascinating series about Badlands lowlifes and dreamers living and dying amid gold fever. At first you may be taken aback by how rough this all is. Corpses rot, bruises heal very slowly, and no one ever seems able to wash completely. The historically accurate language is, if anything, more vulgar than on "The Sopranos," its Sunday night lead-in. Much of what goes on in this lawless burg is even more brutal than what's depicted in modern-day New Jersey, too. What holds "Deadwood" together is the richness of its characters and the ambiguities at play.
