The haunted house mystery is almost as old as the motion picture itself and covers a gamut of films from comedies to intense horror to a mixture of the two. One of the earliest was 1927's THE CAT AND THE CANARY, and it would be emulated and improved upon and not lived up to over the years. James Whale kept the mystery in the mansion scenario, adding a dash of quirky humor and giving us a cast of eccentrics with Ernest Thesiger and Boris Karloff at the head of that pack for his classic THE OLD DARK HOUSE. The addition of humor didn't go unnoticed, and was kept around for the 1939 remake of THE CAT AND THE CANARY and its far less successful remake in 1979, and would continue with Steve Miner's 1980 HOUSE. It hasn't all, by any means, been for laughs though. Robert Wise locked us into one of the most haunted houses in cinema history in THE HAUNTING. Jack Hill is something of an accidental exploiteer. Focused. Wry. Intelligent. Charming. Not at all the smarmy fella one would think of as the originator of the notorious women-in-prison genre. The catch? They have to live until morning. Watson Pritchard (Cook) knows to be afraid. His brother was one of seven people murdered in the house. But he needs the money, so he agrees to join the others, who include test pilot Lance Schroeder (Long), columnist Ruth Bridgers (Julie Mitchum), psychiatrist David Trent (Marshal) and typist Nora Manning (Carolyn Craig). title: House on a Haunted Hill studio: Warner Home Video starring: Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Richard Long, Alan Marshall, Carolyn Craig, Elisha Cook, Jr., Julie Mitchum release year film rating: 2.5 Stars reviewed by: Bill Warren Like The Haunting, this older horror movie got a big-scale remake in 1999; unlike The Haunting, the remake was quite watchable, despite some plot problems. But also unlike The Haunting, the original is no classic. It's entertaining, to be sure, with a great, silken, purring performance by the irreplaceable Vincent Price, but it's basically just a surprise-ending murder mystery with some haunted-house trappings. House on Haunted Hill is actually better known for who directed the original William Castle and for its in-theater gimmick dubbed "Emergo" than it is for the movie itself. Which makes this DVD such a disappointment: there basically are no extras. The amusing trailer is included, there are some alternate languages, and the disc includes both the letterboxed and panned-and-scanned versions (which seems pointless in this case, since the print required minimal letterboxing). The film cries out for the kind of treatment the Price-Castle followup, The Tingler, has received on DVD; that one has plenty of extras, and the same could have been done here. The DVD should have had biographies of William Castle, Vincent Price and writer Robb White; it should have had narration by someone, and it really should have had a full explanation of Castle's outrageous gimmick of "Emergo."
