A Tribute to Donald O'Connor
Donald O'Connor was a show business fixture for over 75 years, having made his stage debut at the age of 3 days! He appeared in his first film in 1937, at the age of 11. His reputation as a song-and-dance man, following in his entertainer family's footsteps, was established from that time on. His most successful long-term gig was as the star of the "Francis the Talking Mule" series, the first of which appeared in 1949. He stopped the series after six, supposedly not pleased with the last three. However, the film that people today associate most strongly with O'Connor is "Singin' in the Rain," also starring

Donald David Dixon Ronald O'Connor , an acrobatic dancer and Emmy award-winning actor who was best known for his role in "Singin' in the Rain," died on Sept. 27 from heart failure. He was 78. Born in Chicago to a vaudeville family, O'Connor first appeared in movies as a child, starring as Huckleberry Finn in "Tom Sawyer Detective." At 18, he was drafted into the Army, and spent World War II performing in 3,000 shows for the troops. Once the war ended, O'Connor became one of the top Hollywood stars of the 1940s and 1950s. He made a name for himself in musical comedies like "There's No Business Like Show Business," "Anything Goes" and "Walking My Baby Back Home." His dance routine in the 1952 hit, "Singin' in the Rain," had him tumbling on the floor, running up walls and doing back flips while singing the song, "Make 'em Laugh." O'Connor won a Best Actor Golden Globe for his performance. In 1949, he starred in "Francis, The Talking Mule," a film about an Army private who speaks, Dr. Doolittle-fashion, with a mule. It was such a hit that five sequels followed. As one of the rotating hosts of "The Colgate Comedy Hour," O'Connor won an Emmy in 1952 for Outstanding Personality. That same year, he hosted the Academy Awards. O'Connor continued acting well into his 70s, making memorable appearances in the films, "Toys" and "Out to Sea." His family, who was by his side when he died, said his last words were: "I'd like to thank the Academy for my lifetime achievement award that I will eventually get."

Jan. 26, 1947 (Denmark) This attractive blonde soprano built her professional reputation in several Broadway musicals, including Hitchy-Koo (1920) and two editions of the Music Box Revue (1922-23). Moore's exquisite voice brought her a contract with the Metropolitan Opera, where she played various roles from 1928 to 1931. When the arrival of sound film led Hollywood to seek big voices for the silver screen, Moore was cast as Jenny Lind in the film A Lady's Morals (1930). The past week has had many notable deaths ( Edward Said Robert Palmer George Plimpton ) but Gothamist was most saddened about yesterday's passing of entertainer Donald O'Connor , whose most memorable work is the show-stopping song, "Make 'Em Laugh," in Singin' in the Rain . O'Connor appeared in loads of films , like Anything Goes with Bing Crosby and the Francis the Talking Mule pictures, but his role as Cosmo Brown in Singin' made you wonder why there isn't a movie about him, versus Gene Kelly's Don Lockwood who could be at times, let's face it, really boring and full of himself. There are two show-stopping moments, one being Kelly's song-and-dance in the rain of the title song, which is a dreamy, beautiful interlude. But it's "Make 'Em Laugh" with O'Connor defying gravity, talking pratfalls to a new level, fisticuffs with a literal dummy, and throwing out one amazing move after another that gives the audience a chance to laugh and cry aloud. If one feminist is correct, the last thing the president should do is nominate a woman to the Supreme Court.
By Heather Mac Donald R eal women do not separate their emotions from their reason. This is the central feminist insight propounded by legal commentator Dahlia Lithwick in a recent New York Times op-ed on Justice Sandra Day O'Connor . Lithwick's op-ed demonstrates yet again that there are no more faithful proponents of the Victorian view of women than modern-day feminists. If Lithwick's analysis of echt female consciousness is correct, no president who cares about the rule of law should ever contemplate putting another woman on the Supreme Court.
Justice O'Connor has a big problem, according to Slate editor Lithwick: She didn't act as a female justice should. She was "curt," "unsentimental," "tart," and "heartless." As a result, O'Connor a "huge mystery to most women" of Lithwick's generation. For example, asks Lithwick: "How could someone who blew open doors for generations of women . . . show so little empathy to female victims of violence in the 2000 case of U.S.

Donald's father Chuck was a professional boxer and circus performer. Donald was put on stage at 13 months old, doing things like hand stands with his family's act.
When Donald's father passed away his mother kept the act going, developing their act into a successful Vaudeville routine. Donald's mother taught him such dances as Buck and Tap, Black Bottom and was doing routines and by four years old his dancing became a big part of the routine. When he was sixteen years of age he was part of a swing dance troupe called the Jivin Jack's and Jill's with partner Peggy Ryan. Later he got his main dance training from Johnny Boyle and Louis DaPron. He entered the movies with then famous Bing Crosby in "Sing You Sinners" in 1938 when a studio executive saw his act. Later Louis DaPron was a major influence in his dance ability.
