Corny little child I was, I loved my mother's Fifth Dimension (The Age of Aquarius!) record with "Wedding Bell Blues" on it. I got goosebumps every time I heard that first, urgent, "Bill!" That was written by Laura Nyro, as were "Blowing Away" and "Billy's Blues" sung by the Fifth Dimension. Barbra herself did "Stoney End." My favorite covers were Blood, Sweat & Tears "Eli's Comin" and the jubiliant "And When I Die." I'm not scared of dying and I don't really care if it's peace you find in dyin' Well then let the time be near Laura Nyro "And When I Die" She also wrote "Stoned Soul Picnic," "Save the Country," "Time & Love"... Oh there were so many. They were bluesy when blues wasn't cool. So bluesy, she was booed off the stage at one point in her career by fans who could only hear folk. She died at 49. Live At The Bottom Line Bronx-born Laura Nyro was a jazz-poet white soul singer-songwriter years before Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones . She soon became known as a hit songwriter, as her tunes became hits for Peter, Paul and Mary, the Fifth Dimension, and others. After a disastrous appearance at Monterey Pop in 1967, Nyro recovered with a couple of idiosyncratic, allusive, almost stream-of-consciousness LPs that were suprisingly successful. But she spent most of the next thirty years in retirement before her death in April of 1997, and her reputation is mostly built on what she accomplished in her late teens and early twenties. Nyro may be more noteworthy as a trailblazer than a composer or performer - despite her distinctive vocal style and soul-baring lyrics, I don't find her songs communicate to me anything like Mitchell or Jones do, partly because she can be so damn hard to understand. A contemporary of Joni Mitchell and Carole King, Laura is regarded as one of the great lost talents of popular music and is best known for songs 'Stoned Soul Picnic' and 'Stoney End'. The programme includes an interview with Laura's manager in the late sixties, David Geffen. "From 1966 to 1970, Laura Nyro had a real burst of creative genius... like a shooting star," he tells Bette Midler. "She was one of the most interesting artists of the period and should have had a bigger career, given how talented she was." The show also features a rare recording of Laura's performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, which catapulted Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin onto the world stage. Possibly her last great record, SMILE is an underappreciated find.

The following year's New York Tendaberry extended that tough but tender vision, waxed and softened by her eloquence ("Captain for Dark Mornings," "Save the Country," "Gibsom Street"). Gonna Take a Miracle The Loom's Desire Angel in the Dark , her last studio sessions for Rounder, but the live CD captures as much of her magic as can be held. Without product and touring, Nyro's status in the mid-Seventies waned, as did her audience. That's a shame, because from the Nineties on, her music should have been celebrated as the precursor of the Lilith Fair generation.
