An educational DVD developed by Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) for Disney 's popular television series Bill Nye the Science Guy has won one of the most coveted awards in the educational market - a Teacher's Choice Award. The 26-minute " " episode is one of 100 programs in the series, which targets secondary school audiences with its fast-paced approach, humor, and hands-on activities. "The Bill Nye DVD collection provides science teachers a wealth of resources to augment their lessons. With DVD technology, teachers have on-demand access to specific video clips that are aligned to national standards," said John Ristvey, a co-director of the Education and Public Outreach team at McREL, a Colorado-based research and education organization that provides schools, teachers, and parents with practical, proven solutions to education challenges. The new DVD transcends linear VHS delivery and presents more than just the bare bones about x-rays, the healing of broken bones, bone marrow, and the body's joints. In addition, all content is correlated to National Science Standards, glossaries and quizzes are interactive, and the episode is available with Spanish translation and closed-captioning. The DVD will be featured with other products in the January 2004 issue of Learning, complete with product profile, graphics, and contact information.

Evaluation of the BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY Television Series and Outreach R OCKMAN ET AL San Francisco, CA Executive Summary July 1996 BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY is a widely-viewed, children's television series on science. Designed for eight-to-ten year olds, this series is shown in late afternoons Monday through Friday on PBS stations and on commercial television over the weekends. R OCKMAN ET AL , an independent research group in San Francisco, was contracted by KCTS, Seattle, WA, to undertake an evaluation of the BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY television series. The evaluation was charged with exploring the impact of the series on children at home, in school, and in other settings where children can watch television. Both the funders and the PBS station were concerned about science learning outcomes, attitude change, and the impact of the series on girls and minority children. Background and Methodology: The study was conducted in three sites - Sacramento, CA; Philadelphia, PA; and the Indianapolis, IN area - representative of the diversity of the viewing audience. At each site, we recruited school viewers and home viewers from rural, suburban, and urban settings for participation, as well as additional, equivalent classrooms who did not watch the series. School and home viewers received a monthly schedule of programs, as well as regular incentives to encourage a high level of viewing throughout the five month study. We provided both viewers in school and at home with twelve BILL NYE programs on videotape as a basic set of programs for viewing. In-school and at-home viewers were asked to watch at least the 12 programs provided.
