Bill Nye Vice-President The Planetary Society Nye earned a degree in mechanical engineering at Cornell University and spent several years working as an engineer until he combined his dual love of science and comedy to create the Science Guy. The planned landing on Christmas Day of Britain's Beagle 2 will be followed by two NASA probes, Spirit and Opportunity, which will land on different days in January. The general purpose of the missions is to find evidence of life, or past life. What does a sundial have to do with this and why on Earth would it come from soggy, cloudy Seattle? Nye "When I first suggested the sundial to the (Mars) team, they said to me, 'Bill, dude, this is for NASA, the space program. We have a lot of really good clocks,' " said Bill Nye The Science Guy, cracking that wry smile familiar to those who have seen his antics on television. To explain human digestion, he rigged a contraption that was part blender, part chocolate milkshake and part spatula. The blender was the Mouth-o-Matic. The shake was the saliva and the spatula was the tongue. "Chyme is the goopy, soupy stuff that we make in our stomachs that our body digests," he told his TV viewers. "It's a lot easier for our body to move chyme around than it would be, say, a whole burger and plate of fries." He doesn't just play one on TV. Bill Nye really is a science guy. He uses that "Science Guy" moniker as the name of his TV show and as part of the title of his newest book, Bill Nye the Science Guy's Big Blue Ocean (Hyperion, $16). "Our small intestine absorbs the chemicals in our food much like a towel soaks up water," Nye explained on one of his shows. As he was looking over the designs for instruments to be carried aboard NASA's 2001 Mars Surveyor Lander, Nye noticed that the lander's Pancam panoramic camera's solar-panel calibration device a small aluminum square with an upright post in the center of it looked familiar. "I said, 'Hey you guys, this has got to be a sundial. It'll be great.' They said, 'Bill, this is a space program. We have a lot of clocks. Thanks for your input.' Everybody was skeptical at first but later thought it would be kind of cool," Nye recalled. The launch of the Surveyor Lander was canceled after the disappearance of the Mars Polar Lander in December 1999 following its descent into the Martian atmosphere for a landing on the planet's south polar region. But the first interplanetary sundial finally is expected to make it to the red planet Jan. 4, 2004. Identical sundials, each about 3 inches square, are being carried by the two Mars Exploration Rovers.
