Convocation Center funding with surprise $1 million gift
KINGSTON. R.I. May 23, 2000 Thomas M. Ryan, chairman and chief executive officer of CVS Corporation and a 1975 URI alum, surprised guests at the University of Rhode Island Foundation Ball held on Saturday, May 20, with the announcement of a $1 million personal gift to the URI Convocation Center Campaign. Ryan announced the gift from him and his wife, Cathy, during his remarks to the more than 375 URI supporters at the event. The gift represents the second $1 million personal contribution made to the campaign; the first was made by Bradford R. Boss, chairman of A.T. Cross at the campaign kick-off in February 1999. The largest gift to the campaign so far was $3 million from the CVS Corporation, which was also announced by Ryan in 1999. "I am grateful for the top-notch education I received at URI, and am happy to be able to give back with this kind of support," said Ryan who serves the University as co-chair, with Gov. Lincoln Almond, of the Blue Ribbon Steering Committee and chair of the Leadership Gifts Committee for the URI Convocation Center. "The athletic, academic, and cultural events that will be held at the Convocation Center will enhance student life at the University and enrich the entire community."

"It seemed like everyone came together one notch tighter," said Ryan Muspratt, a freshman hockey player at UAF, about the people that helped create his artistic vision. In a humble manner Muspratt went on to say that he couldn't have done it without his friends. Muspratt, a self-proclaimed attempting artist with "no artistic talent" had an art project due in his 200-level art appreciation class. Wondering what to do, he realized that he had to mix art and hockey. "I had to do something about hockey, I meanÂ… when I'm in English, I write about hockey." So instead of drawing something small and easy that he considered sub-par, Muspratt instead thought big. When finished, the giant hockey player measured approximately 40-feet long by 30-feet wide. The project was made entirely of hockey equipment, with matching gear to each section (gloves for the glove, ice skates for the feet and 24 hockey sticks for the giant stick). The giant puck was made entirely of individual hockey pucks, measuring a foot and a half in diameter.

An incredible film from the start. If anyone was wondering what that shaking feeling they had was in the first 30 minutes was, it was reality dropping in to catch a flick and tell us how it must have been. The cast of big names do credit to veterans of the Hell they suffered. Spielberg's genius cannot be praised enough for his brilliance in camera, special effects, and cast selection. On a personal note, I myself plan to join the Canadian Forces when I come of the legal age, and although I still plan to join, the only thing I kept thinking over and over during this film was "Jesus Christ, am I insane?" <"The Disgruntled Fat Historian" 01/02/00>
Well-done war film. Aside from being a bit long in the tooth, everything else falls into place perfectly. And it's a hell of a lot better than THE THIN RED LINE. ***1/2 out of ****
I thought SAVING PRIVATE RYAN was definitely the best movie of 1998. It was visually and mentally mesmerizing. It's the best movie I've seen since PULP FICTION (10/10). It's definitely 10/10.
What a mess. if the first 30 minutes were different more people would realize how truly awful this film is. The dialogue is dreadful. The acting is awful. What's even worse is how Damon chose to stay and not go home. I mean I bet soldiers would kill for a chance that Damon had. You suck Steven Spielberg. You're right up there with James Cameron (the devil) in writing terrible dialogue.

2005 Baseball Preview Index Next up: The kids Top 10 Pirates prospects It has been well documented that the Pirates have endured 12 consecutive losing seasons at the major-league level. However, less often discussed is that their streak of producing a plethora of prospects who reach Class AAA at the same time is just about as long but will end sooner. Buffalo, then the organization's Class AAA affiliate, had several players in 1992 who later played for the Pirates with varying degrees of success Al Martin, Carlos Garcia, Kevin Young, Steve Cooke, Paul Wagner and Tim Wakefield. However, this season's crop of Class AAA players should top that. "I've been in the organization since 1987, and I'd say that since around 1990 this is the most talented group of upper level players we've had," Indianapolis manager Trent Jewett said. "Now talent doesn't always play its way into what you want it to, but I think this is certainly a positive sign especially with the young arms.
