She got first contacts to the theater during her school time, where she joined in the singing of the royal theater of Copenhagen thanks to her beautiful voice. At the age of 14 she already left school. When her father died in the same year, she should graduate from sales education in order to be able to contribute some money to the living of her family. The daughter of well-to-do Jewish parents in Russia, she was sent to a Catholic school in Switzerland for her education. She studied the violin seriously, but returned to Russia to become a successful stage actress, using the name Nazimova. By 1903 she was the toast of St. Petersburg . In 1905 she came to the US with her first husband, Paul Orleneff. Nazimova remained in the United States when her husband and theatrical troupe returned to Europe. She later sent for her sister Nina and Nina's young son - who grew up to be Val Lewton. She was married to Charles Bryant from 1912-1925. She made her movie debut in War Brides in 1916 (at the age of 37). During the sound era she occiassionally did stage work and films until 1944. Die Aufführung ihres ersten deutschen Werks "Heißes Blut" wird zunächst wegen offenherziger Ehebruchszenen von der Zensur im Kaiserreich verboten. In Berlin spielt Nielsen in einer Vielzahl erfolgreicher Stummfilme mit. In dieser Zeit steigt sie durch ihre zurückhaltende und wenig theatralische, aber dennoch ausdrucksstarke Gestik und Mimik schnell zu einem der ersten europäischen Filmstars auf. The French poet Guillaume Apollinaire once wrote in a letter to a friend that the clothes of the women in Paris could do to their body's what until then only the Romantic poets could achieve with words. This statement draws our attention to aspects of the shift between Romantic and post-Romantic poetry. On the one hand, Apollinaire refers to Romantic achievements with appreciation, but on the other hand he seems to ironize them. It appears that he ironically applies the very serious metaphysical pattern of Romantic criticism to things that certainly do not belong to the higher spheres of the mind. Lower elements such as sensual pleasure and eroticism seem to have taken the place of what the Romantics saw as an elevated matter of enormous importance: an almost religious, but sterile, glorification of the word. To a certain extent, I believe that Apollinaire's somewhat provocative attitude reflects post-Romantic tendencies in literature of the beginning of our century. In 1920, the Flemish poet Paul van Ostaijen wrote a poem about the Danish movie-star Asta Nielsen, in which we can distinguish a similar attitude. The speaker in the poem especially seems to be interested in Asta's looks. The poem is about the swaying of her hips, about the way in which she erotically puts a flower in her mouth, about her gorgeous balance, her legs, etcetera. Furthermore, Asta has characteristics of a prostitute: the men who enter the cinema have to pay only little and in exchange for that, Asta adjusts herself to their particular dreams and sneaky desires.
