Libretto by the composer based on the opera
Language: English
World Premiere: January 1993, Mobile Opera Publisher: Composer's Note: The story of Harriet Tubman concerns an individual gifted with those rare qualities of courage and imagination which enabled her to overcome seemingly insuperable odds. She followed the North Star to freedom and then became herself a famous "conductor" on the Underground Railroad, helping many other slaves to escape. Her story is also a moving example of the age-old conflict between good and evil. Abraham Lincoln described it in very direct terms: ...slavery is the eternal struggle between two principles which have stood face to face since the beginning of time, and which will ever continue to struggle. The one is the common right of all humanity; the other is the divine right of kings. Slavery is the spirit that says 'You work and toil and earn bread, and I'll eat it!' No matter what shape it comes in it is the same principle. The remarkable seventeenth century Englishman, John Lilburne put it in another way: "For what is done to anyone may be done to everyone."

A short story by Anonymous
Mary Musgrave
"Nine carets ef it's a blessed one." "Scale 'im, an' ye'll find he's a half better. Clear es a bottle o' gin, an' flawless es the pope! Tommy Dartmoor, ye're in luck, s' welp me never ef ye ain't, an' that's a brilliant yer can show the polis an' not get time fer." Tommy Dartmoor, who owed his surname to a crown establishment within the restraining walls of which he had once enjoyed a temporary residence, growled out a recommendation to "stow that," and then added, "Boys, we'll wet this. Trek to Werstein's." Forthwith a crowd of dirty, tanned diggers turned their heads in the direction of Gustav Werstein's American Bar, and walked toward it as briskly as the heat and their weariness would admit of. The Israelite saw them coming, straightened himself out of the half-doze in which he had passed the baking afternoon, stopped down the tobacco in the porcelain bowl of his long-stemmed pipe with stumpy forefinger, and, twisting a cork off his corkscrew, stood in readiness. "Name yer pizons, boys, an' get outside 'em, wishin' all good luck to R'yal Straight; R'yal Straight bein' the name o' this yer stone given by Thomas D. Hesquire, original diskiverer an' present perprietor."

Story about president's dog Spot gets Musgrave votes at Dos Rios
October 27, 2004, Greeley Tribune Excerpt from the article: Watch out Stan Matsunaka: A straw poll at Dos Rios Elementary shows Marilyn Musgrave is kicking some tail. She does, after all, have the endorsement of the president's dog. Musgrave and Matsunaka were campaigning to a much shorter audience than usual Tuesday as they tried to sell themselves to students at the elementary school. They, along with Pam Groeger, Jim Riesberg and Phillip Moreno, representing Ken Salazar, were encouraging the kids to vote for them in the Nov. 2 student election. The student election is in most area schools with students around the district learning about the candidates and issues. Dos Rios was the only school to secure so many candidates running for office, and kids were excited to hear from the people they've heard their parents talking about. "I wanted to promise them more recess and candy but I refrained," Musgrave said. She didn't need to go that far, however. She told the students about her trip on Air Force One and meeting the president's dog Spot, who passed away in February. She said she was Spot's favorite person on the plane. "If Spot could vote, Spot would vote for Marilyn Musgrave," she said.

STORY MUSGRAVE, M.D.
Over the course of 30 years, Story Musgrave, M.D. paved his way into NASA history as one of its most colorful, passionate and dedicated astronauts. He joined NASA in 1967 with every confidence to be part of a mission to Mars. Although those plans didn't work out, many others did. He served on two satellite-launching missions and led the spacewalking team that repaired the Hubble Space Telescope in 1993. He was also the first astronaut to fly a record-breaking six space shuttle missions. And, as of his last flight in 1996, he was the oldest person in space at the age of 61. In addition, he made many "behind-the-scenes" contributions, helping to design the Skylab program in the mid-1970s and the spacesuits and equipment needed by astronauts on spacewalks. Prior to joining NASA, Musgrave was a Marine, serving as an aviation electrician and aircraft crew chief in the Far East. After returning to the U.S., he also worked for the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York, as a mathematician. When selected by NASA in 1967, he was a researcher in cardiovascular and exercise physiology at the University of Kentucky, where he has previously interned as a surgeon and worked as a U.S. Air Force post-doctoral fellow. Born in 1935 in Boston, this amazing space explorer is also a fan of the classroom. To date, he holds six degrees a doctorate of medicine, as well as two bachelor's degrees and three master's degrees in subjects ranging from mathematics to business administration to literature. He has published 44 scientific papers on topics such as aerospace medicine, exercise physiology and clinical surgery. When not sitting in a classroom, he regularly devours literature, philosophy and metaphysics.

Dr. Story Musgrave -
Heard 'Noble, Magnificent
Music' In Space
By Richard Macey
http://www.smh.com.au:80/news/0002/08/text/national5.html

Dr Story Musgrave was never your typical, laconic American astronaut.
The six-time space traveller, who retired from NASA in 1997 after 30 years, holds a masters degree in literature, talks passionately about his new life as an artist, and is convinced intelligent life is out there, somewhere - if only we would look for it.
He admits to having heard music in space - music none of his crewmates could hear.
"I am sure the [NASA]) administration did think I was eccentric," said Dr Musgrave, 64, who is in Sydney for the Qualcon 2000 business conference at the Australian Technology Park in Redfern.
A keen photographer, Dr Musgrave snapped 10,000 pictures of Earth from space. He has brought hundreds with him to show Australians - including one of Uluru, which he regards as one of his great achievements.
"I worked for decades to get that," he said. "I understood the historic, the mythological and spiritual significance of the rock. I thought it would be marvellous to frame it in a spaceship window.
It is exceedingly difficult to find ... it's nowhere. It wasn't till my sixth flight that I got it."
