For The Love Of Mumtaz Mahal
The beauty of Mumtaz Mahal, like the glorious Taj Mahal, was unrivalled. She captured the mighty Emperor Shah Jahan's heart along with the imagination of the court poets who likened her beauty to be brighter than that of the moon. Mumtaz Mahal or Arjumand Banu (her original name) was daughter of Asaf Khan. She married Shah Jahan at the age of 14. Though she was the third wife of Shahjahan, she remained his favorite throughout her life. She named Mumtaz Mahal in 1612 after her marriage and remained an inseparable companion of her husband till her death. As a symbol of her faith and love she bore Shahjahan 14 children. Deeply in love with her, the emperor conferred upon her the highest honor of the land - the royal seal - Mehr Uzaz. Stories of their love spread far and wide during the Mughal rule. The brave and wise queen was a pillar of support, love and comfort to the mighty emperor and gave him wise counsel when required. So inseparable were they that she accompanied him to all his conquests.

Mumtaz Mahal
Not satiated with the story of Taj, I decided to purchase a book on Taj from a local book-store. The story of Taj looked incomplete to me as I wanted to know more about the lady who commanded such love and respect of the emperor that it drove him to such a magical creation.
Maiden Name
After turning the pages of book, I came to know that she originally hailed from Persia. Her maiden name was Arjumand Banu and she was the daughter of Asif Khan, the brother of the emperor Jahangir's consort Noorjahan. It was after the death of her father-in -law(Jahangir) she was bestowed with the name Mumtaz Mahal and her husband Khurramm with Shah Jahan.
Fortuitous Meeting
Mumtaz Mahal was so pretty that Prince Khurram (Later shah Jahan) lost his heart to her in their very first meeting at her silk and glass beads shop. The next day of their fortuitous meeting, Prince Khurram put up a proposal before Emperor seeking Arjumand's hand. The emperor raised his hand in assent, perhaps recalling his own love for Noorjahan.

He was a young handsome prince accustomed to luxury and refinement. As he made his way to the Meena bazaar, the private market attached to the harem, he was surrounded by a string of fawning companions, all eager to catch his eye. Even at 15, young Khurram cut a dashing figure with his father's aristocratic nose, high forehead and large languid eyes. Every maid at the bazaar carried a torch for him. The Flame is Lit Arjumand Banu sat with her silks and glass beads at her shop. She was the daughter of Asaf Khan, the brother of the emperor Jahangir's consort, Noorjahan. Exquisitely pretty, Khurram was drawn to her. He saw a piece of glass at her stall and asked its worth. When she saucily replied that it was diamond and not glass he gave her ten thousand rupees (a sum she boldly said he could not afford), picked up the piece of glass and left carryimg with him her image in his mind.

Meanwhile, he was married to Quandari Begum, a Persian princess, for political reasons.
