Viggo Mortensen stars in "A History of Violence", David Cronenberg’s latest thriller, which was a critical success at the Cannes Film Festival, and set for release in 10 markets on September 23 before expanding wide on September 30. North Country native and Hollywood heartthrob Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings, Hidalgo), plays the part of Tom Stall, a pillar of a small town community who runs a diner and lives a happy and quiet life with his lawyer wife, Maria Bello (ER, The Cooler) and their two children. Their lives change when Mortensen impedes an attempted robbery and is called as a hero by the media, attracting the attention of some mobsters William Hurt (The Village, Oscar-winning Kiss of the Spider Woman) and Ed Harris (The Human Stain, Pollack) who mistake him with somebody else. The movie is based on the graphic novel written by John Wagner and Vince Locke, which was first published by Paradox Press in 1997.

But just as the production got started, director Peter Jackson had to fire the actor, either because he was simply too young for the role or he wasn't willing to really throw himself into the part, or both. (The director says the former; other sources say the latter.) Jackson quickly turned to Viggo Mortensen, whom he'd never even met. As luck would have it, he was a natural. His fortitude, his love for Tolkien, his swordsmanship and mostly his abiding cool knocked everyone out on the set. The filmmakers-cast and crew alike-still talk about him as if he's some kind of folk hero who arrived at the last minute to save the day. For actor Mortensen, the real attraction of this latest movie, coming off Lord of the Rings, was "at the time it was just a story that was interesting to me for several reasons. I had heard of this guy, Hopkins, I am interested in horses, as well as Buffalo Bill, because I think he was instrumental in creating the Western genre for better and for worse. His mythologizing of the west was his touchstone in the community." It also appears that starring in a movie featuring, in part, the exploits of Buffalo Bill, had personal significance for Mortensen "because I'm related to him through my mom's side of the family." So over the years, Mortensen says, his interest in Native American history and culture was another factor in his decision to take on this grand Western adventure. "I like that period of history, especially for this country, when we began to look beyond the borders and look at this country's place in the world." Mortensen has clearly no qualms in having starred in two such physically demanding projects, "that are both, in my opinion, really entertaining adventures, sort of ordeal or challenge and heroic stories. They're also thought provoking, not just a yarn, and have popular appeal. It's great that I've gotten to be in two projects like that in a row."
