"Hiyo Silver, and away!" Who was that masked man? It was Clayton Moore, a man who entertained millions of kids and adults alike all over the world when he portrayed the "Lone Ranger." Moore was truly the one and only Ranger, and he not only played the part of the hero in the white hat, but he was also said to have lived and breathed the part as well. Here is his story: Jack Carlton Moore was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 14, 1914. He was the youngest of three boys who grew up in a loving family home. His father was a real estate developer. Before his rise to the silver screen, Moore first became an acrobat in a flying circus troupe when he was in his twenties. This troupe of talented daredevils was the first to work without the benefit of a net, and the first to work over water. After Moore left the troupe, he went on to do some modeling jobs in New York before he finally found his way to Hollywood in 1938. He had changed his name to Clayton Moore in the mean time, and he did some stuntman work and some extra parts for the movie industry. By 1941, Moore was working steady for Republic Pictures. He portrayed heroes, the guys in the white hats, as well as bad guys, who always wore the black hats, of course, in several western movies.

Clayton Moore
Real name: Jack Carlton Moore
September 14, 1914 - December 28, 1999
A native of Chicago, Clayton Moore came to prominence in the Republic serials and westerns of the 1940s, where he did a mix of hero and badguy roles. His credits at Republic Pictures number about twenty films for the period 1941-1953. Around 1949, Moore, along with Jay Silverheels, was signed to star in a half-hour western adventure series that was to be broadcast on some newfangled technology called television. The character had been heard on radio for about fifteen years and Republic brought two serials to the silver screen in the late 1930s - this was the Lone Ranger, the fabled 'Masked Rider of the Plains', created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker. Through that role, as well as his off-screen deeds and actions, Moore became immortalized as what all of us imagine and believe is THE Lone Ranger. Most important, he became a real life role model that we could could look up to and admire. That's the legacy that Clayton Moore leaves behind ... and that's how I'll remember him.

CLAYTON MOORE September 14, 1914 - December 28, 1999
They predicted rain for the Sunday memorial ceremony for Clayton Moore January 16th at the Gene Autry Western Museum in Los Angeles. My son Chris and I did not care, we had to be there to say goodbye to the man who had made the Lone Ranger live on the screen and actually made himself into the embodiment of that character.
Many years ago, my three sons and I met Moore and Silver at the opening of one of the Lone Ranger Restaurants where he was making a personal appearance. Now, here we were at the closing of his public life.
As we made our way up the path to the Museum, a line of mounted policemen met us. At the head of that line stood Silver, older and grayer and temporarily out of retirement, there to bid a silent goodbye to his riding partner. He wore the very saddle that the Lone Ranger sat upon as he rode the dusty trails of the old west. Moore’s daughter, Dawn, stood beside the horse holding his bridle.
Once inside the main patio area, we signed the guest book and received a Memorial leaflet with a picture of Moore and a list of the guest speakers. The Lone Ranger’s Creed was printed inside and it was a piece of memorabilia to treasure. As the hour drew near for things to start, a crowd began to assemble. The threatening skies went unheeded. Many cowboys in Old West gear milled around exchanging stories of their movie days. Many were familiar, but their names were a blur. A man wandered around wearing a Lone Ranger tee shirt he had purchased in the gift shop.

Obituary: George C. Scott "I'll wear the white hat the rest of my life. The Lone Ranger is a great character, a great American. Playing him made me a better person." Clayton Moore, the actor irrevocably identified with the Lone Ranger the masked man of the Plains who raced on horseback to the "William Tell Overture" and the cry of "Hi-Yo, Silver!" died of a heart attack in Los Angeles on December 28. He was 85. Born in Chicago, Moore entered show business as a circus trapeze performer before heading to Hollywood in the 1930s, where he graduated from stunts to bits in Saturday afternoon serials. "The Lone Ranger" was originally a radio program and the basis of a few low-budget films in the 1930s. When it was transplanted to television in 1949 on the brand-new ABC network one of the first programs filmed especially for the medium Moore took the role of his life. "Once I got the Lone Ranger role, I didn't want any other," Moore told the Los Angeles Times in 1985. "I like playing the good guy." He said that as a child, "I wanted to be either a cowboy or a policeman. As the Lone Ranger, I got to be both."

Tribute to a Good Man
by: Joseph Wallison The world paused the day Clayton Moore died, just two days before the beginning of the year 2000 was upon us. For with the passing of Clayton Moore "The Lone Ranger" and the tributes that followed, all baby boomers and anyone who ever saw a Lone Ranger TV show or movie were in for a reality check. Where has our society gone and how did we get here since the sound of "A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty 'Hi Yo Silver!'"? Clayton Moore portrayed The Lone Ranger beginning in 1949, and for 50 years, "the masked man" showed us the right and moral way to lead our lives and how to treat our fellow man. Born Jack Carlton Moore on September 14, 1914, the son of a real estate broker in Chicago, he was brought up with a strong mid-western foundation of decency and morality. As a child he enjoyed going to the movies and was thrilled by the adventures of his favorite cowboy actors, Tom Mix, Ken Maynard, George O'Brien, William S. Hart and Harry Carey, Sr. The young lad dreamed of being a policeman and a cowboy when he grew up. His dream would come true. Moore started performing in the early 1930s as a trapeze artist in a traveling circus act. After performing at the 1934 World's Fair in Chicago, his trapeze days ended when a fall during rehearsal injured his knee. It was time for the ruggedly handsome athlete to move on and.................................................

Lone Ranger star dies
The Lone Ranger brought law and order to the West
Actor Clayton Moore, the masked man who rode to fame as The Lone Ranger, has died of a heart attack at the age of 85.
A spokesman for the West Hills Hospital in Los Angeles said Moore had been rushed to the hospital's emergency room on Tuesday and had died at 0920 PST (1720 GMT).
"Today, we've lost a part of America in the passing of Clayton Moore," said Johnny Grant, the honorary mayor of Hollywood, who helped unveil Moore's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1987.
"He was a great showman and a great human being." 'Hi-Yo Silver!' Born in Chicago on 14 September, 1914, Moore worked in a circus trapeze act and as a model before heading to Hollywood, where he broke into movies as an extra in the late 1930s. Moore said: "I'll wear the white hat the rest of my life" He began playing The Lone Ranger in 1949 on the television version of the hit radio series that always began with Rossini's William Tell Overture and ended with a voice wondering: "Who Was That Masked Man?" Moore appeared in all but a couple of seasons of the show, which he left in 1952 in a salary dispute. But he returned shortly afterwards and went on to appear in 169 episodes until the show closed in 1957.

When the radio program "The Lone Ranger" was transplanted to television in 1949 on the brand new ABC network, Moore took the role of his life Moore played the Lone Ranger from 1949 to 1951, riding his trusty horse Silver and accompanied by his faithful American-Indian friend Tonto as the pair brought law and order to the Old West in every half-hour episode. The show was ABC's biggest hit for a time in the early '50s, when the fledgling network was far overshadowed by CBS and NBC. Fans loved the show's trademarks: the opening theme, from "The William Tell Overture"; the Ranger's horse, Silver, described by the show's announcer as "a fiery horse with the speed of light"; Tonto's name for the Ranger, "kemo sabe"; the silver bullets; the Ranger's habits of never shooting to kill and never removing his mask, unless the plot had him donning some other disguise. Even after the cancellation, Moore continued to wear a mask in public appearances until 1979, when producers of a new film version of "The Lone Ranger" won a court order forcing him to replace his mask with a pair of wraparound sunglasses.
