Clayton Moore
Forest Lawn Glendale
With a thunder of hoofbeats and a hearty, "Hi Yo, Silver!," Clayton Moore is best known at the one and only Lone Ranger. Moore started his career as a circus acrobat and aerialist, and performed at the 1934 World's Fair in Chicago. Moore then went to New York City, where he worked as a model. In 1938, Moore headed to Hollywood, where he worked as an extra and a stuntman in films, primarily Westerns. In the early 1940s, Moore began to appear in larger roles in films including "The Son of Monte Cristo" (1940), "Perils of Nyoka" (1942), "Black Dragons" (1942), "The Crimson Ghost" (1946), "Jesse James Rides Again" (1947), "Marshal of Amarillo" (1948) and "Sheriff of Wichita" (1949). In 1949, Moore first donned the mask of "The Lone Ranger" in the long-running television series, with his horse, Silver, and his faithful Indian companion, Tonto, played by Jay Silverheels. For three years, until 1952, Moore played the masked rider of the plains, upholding the law and decency with his apparently endless supply of silver bullets, the thunder of hoofbeats and a hearty, "Hi Yo, Silver!" Moore was fired in a salary dispute in 1952, and John Hart played the ranger for the 1952-53 television season. Moore was brought back in 1954, and continued as the ranger until the series ended in 1957, after 169 episodes. Moore also appeared in two feature-length films as "The Lone Ranger" "The Lone Ranger" (1956) and "The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold" (1958).

Clayton Dean Moore February 8, 1968 - January 24, 2003 Clayton had been sick for a while. He had been to the doctors for sore throats and lung problems. He had not mentioned the big boil on his groin area to the doctors. I guess they did not do blood work on him, or if they did the infection did not show up. At Christmas, his family tried to get him to go back to the doctors, he would get to where he was like in a stupor. He refused to go. About a week to 10 days before he died he was taken by ambulance to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. I talked to everyone by phone so do not remember all the time sequences. He was taken into surgery and they worked on his leg, they believed that he had gangrene. Shortly after that his kidneys shut down and then after that his blood pressure kept dropping. He was in toxic shock. He was on a respirator and they said he had double pneumonia. They were slowly draining his lungs and after a few days of his kidneys not working they put him on a kidney machine. They said that they waited to use the kidney machine because they were waiting to see if his kidneys would start working on their own. They didn't. They kept on changing antibiotics and giving him medicine to help his blood pressure stay up.

    "CLAYTON MOORE"
    Jack Carlton Moore
To most of You he was,
    "The Lone Ranger","Clayton Moore."
But to Me He will always be
    "Uncle Clayton."
You all came to know Him as
a hero of good against evil.
That was true of the man in his private life
as well as his public life.
He was a gentleman with strong morals and convictions.
I was moved to decent values by his strong influences
and ability to motivate all that is good in people. He was born Jack Carlton Moore in Chicago on Sept. 14, 1914. He came to Hollywood in the late 1930s to try his hand at acting. While there he met a producer named, Eddie Small. Mr Small suggested he change his first name to 'Clayton.' He started with work as an extra and bit parts. Then He worked in movie serials and a few dozen or so B movies. Mostly as the bad guy. Movies like "Kit Carson" "International Lady" and "The Gay Amigo." He was the leading man in the 1942 serial "The Perils of Nyoka" Later Titled "Nyoka and the Tigermen" In 1949 he was chosen from among 75 actors to become "The Lone Ranger." He finally found the perfect role.
