Barbara Leaming's book tells a tale of sexual, psychological, and political intrigue of the highest order. This is a compelling portrait of a woman at the center of a drama with immensely high stakes, a drama in which the other players are some of the most fascinating characters from the worlds of movies, theater, and politics. CHAPTER ONE On January 16, 1951, a black Lincoln convertible pulled into the driveway at 2000 Coldwater Canyon Drive in Beverly Hills. Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan had just traveled cross-country by train from New York. Miller, tall and lean, had a dark, angular, weathered face and a receding hairline. Kazan, known as Gadget or Gadg to his friends, was small with a large nose and a mop of wavy black hair. The men were in Los Angeles to set up their first film together. Miller had written a screenplay for Kazan to direct, and both had a great deal riding on the venture. But already there was a serious problem. On the train, Kazan had read the most recent draft of The Hook, a story of union corruption on the Brooklyn waterfront, and he'd been disappointed by what Miller had accomplished so far. Kazan made it clear that the script needed to be much better.

Alberto Cassani, 18 Luglio 2003: Eccezionale A qualcuno piace caldo di Billy Wilder Joe e Jerry sono due musicisti senza impiego che si ritrovano involontari testimoni della Strage di San Valentino. Costretti a fuggire dalla città in fretta e furia, i due decidono di travestirsi da donne ed unirsi al gruppo musicale tutto femminile di Sweet Sue. La cantante del gruppo è la bellissima Sugar Kane, che fa girare immediatamente la testa a "Josephine" e "Daphne". Una volta arrivati in Florida, per i due non sarà facile impedire che qualcuno scopra il loro segreto, soprattutto perché mentre un miliardario prova a far innamorare di sé Daphne/Jerry, Joe prova a colpire al cuore la dolce Zucchero. Sensazionale dall'inizio alla fine, è forse - alla pari del "Freaks" di Tod Browning - un film più mitico che bello. Non che "A qualcuno piace caldo" non sia bello, è un film meraviglioso come quasi tutti quelli diretti da Billy Wilder, ma le singole scene, i singoli numeri, hanno finito per soppiantare la visione globale della pellicola. In realtà, la sceneggiatura di Wilder e I.A.L. Diamond (che adattano lo script di un film tedesco) parte da quella che potrebbe essere una barzelletta e la espandono sapientemente fino a farla durare due ore, due ore di sfrenato divertimento.
