Attempts to document all the musicians who played with bill monroe, with brief profiles of many.

A Tribute to Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys
In 1938, Bill Monroe and his brother Charlie broke up their successful duet act, the Monroe Brothers. That same year Bill formed his own band, the Blue Grass Boys. In 1939 he joined the Grand Ole Opry and was a member until his death in 1996. For more than half a century, being a Blue Grass Boy was the crowning achievement of many musicians' careers; for others, a stepping stone to establishing their own bands. This site is intended as a tribute to all the musicians who contributed to the creation of Bill Monroe's music, as well as an information resource for research. The musicians are divided into several groups: Regular: Musicians who were hired as regular members of the band on an ongoing basis. You can view the list of regular Blue Grass Boys sorted any of several ways: Fill-in: Musicians who served as temporary Blue Grass Boys, for a single show or a short period. Studio: Studio musicians who appeared on recordings only.

MONROE, Bill
b 13 Sep. '11, Rosine KY; d 9 Sep. '96, Springfield TN) Singer, mandolinist, bandleader in traditional style: one of the giants of country music; father of the bluegrass genre which in fact was named after his band, the Blue Grass Boys. He began playing mandolin as a child because nobody else in the family played it; after his father died he lived with his uncle, fiddler Pendleton Vandiver, later immortalized in 'Uncle Pen', and was influnced by square-dance guitarist/ fiddler Arnold Shultz as well as black musicians: the best bluegrass, like jazz, has plenty of room in it for individual self-expression. Played in band with brothers Birch (on fiddle) and Charlie (guitarist, b 4 July '03; d '75) on radio '29-34; Birch quit, Bill and Charlie made about 60 sides for Victor and split up '38, Charlie forming his own successful band, the Kentucky Pardners. Bill had started writing ('Kentucky Waltz' '34), sang only harmony until now, formed the Kentuckians, then the Blue Grass Boys, played on Grand Ole Opry from '39 (opened with 'Mule Skinner Blues'; for the first time the Opry audience demanded an encore). At various times the group included David 'Stringbean' Akeman on banjo (as rhythm only), Sally Ann Forrester on accordion, but the classic band had Howard Watts (better known as Cedric Rainwater) on bass, Lester Flatt on guitar and Earl Scruggs playing a five-string banjo in three-fingered Appalachian style, and fiddler Chubby Wise (

Biography: Bill Monroe is the father of bluegrass. He invented the style, invented the name, and for the great majority of the 20th century, embodied the art form. Beginning with his Blue Grass Boys in the '40s, Monroe defined a hard-edged style of country that emphasized instrumental virtuosity, close vocal harmonies, and a fast, driving tempo. Notice the microphone rubber-banded to the mic stand. This is the
microphone of a tape recorder. Bill Monroe would encourage the
recording of his live performances. These tapes are have been available
over the years to many young musicians who wanted to learn directly from the performances ofthese classic bands. The microphone in Joe Stuart's face was later mountedto the roof to eliminate foot pounding noises from coming through the soundsystem. Del's watch, when enlarged, shows that this is a 5:00 show.

80. Roughstock's History Of Country Music - Bill Monroe & Bluegrass
bill monroe was elected to the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1970. It was there that he received a telegram from bill monroe asking Lester to come and
http://www.roughstock.com/history/bgrass.html
The virtual base on which the whole of bluegrass music rests, William Smith (Bill) Monroe was born at Rosine, Kentucky, on September 13, 1911, the youngest of eight children. Brother Charlie was next youngest, having been born eight years earlier. This gap, coupled with Bill's poor eyesight, inhibited the youngest son from many of the usual play activities and gave him an introverted nature which carried through into later life.
Aside from his musical family, one of Monroe's early influences was a black musician from Rosine, Arnold Schultz. Bill would gig with him and rated him a fine musician with an unrivalled feel for the blues. At this time he also started to hear gramophone records featuring such performers as Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers.
In 1934, Radio WLS in Chicago, for whom the three brothers (Birch on fiddle, Charlie on guitar, and Bill on mandolin) had been working on a semi-professional basis, offered them full-time employment. Birch decided to give up music, but Charlie and Bill reforemed as the Monroe Brothers. In 1938, they went their separate ways. Bill formed the Kentuckians and moved to Radio KARK, Atlanta Georgia, where the first of the Blue Grass Boys line-ups was evolved. Bill also began to sing lead and to take mandolin solos rather than just remaining part of the general sound. In 1939, he auditioned for the Opry and George Hay was impressed enough to sign him.
By 1945, Monroe's style had undergone several changes. Most notable was the addition of Earl Scruggs, with a driving banjo style, putting the final, distinctive seal on Monroe's bluegrass sound. Flatt and Scruggs remained with Bill until 1948. Among Monroe's best known songs from the period is "Blue Moon of Kentucky." Included here is another of Monroe's hits: "I'm Going Back to Old Kentucky."
