Elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame® 1970
As singer, songwriter, bandleader, showman, and instrumentalist, no individual is so closely identified with an American musical style as Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass Music. For more than half a century, he shaped bluegrass with his forceful mandolin playing; high, lonesome singing; and mastery of his band, the Blue Grass Boys. In doing so, he gave older country sounds new life; gave the mandolin a new role as a lead instrument in country, pop, and rock; and set standards for musicians as diverse as the Everly Brothers, Elvis Presley, George Jones, and rock star Jerry Garcia.
William Smith Monroe was the youngest of eight children born to of James Buchanan “Buck” Monroe, a prosperous farmer who also ran timber and mining operations, and Malissa Monroe, who kept house and helped pass along dance steps and British-American folksongs to her children. Other musical influences of Bill’s youth include the old-time fiddling of his uncle Pendleton “Uncle Pen” Vandiver and the bluesy guitar playing of Arnold Shultz, a black musician with whom Bill and Uncle Pen sometimes worked local dances.
Monroe lost both his parents by the age of sixteen, and subsequently he followed some of his brothers north to the Chicago area, where he labored in a Sinclair Oil refinery, performed as a square dancer on Chicago’s WLS National Barn Dance, and sang and played mandolin with brothers Charlie (who played guitar) and Birch (who fiddled) on local radio. Birch soon left the trio, and Bill and Charlie decided to pursue music full time as the Monroe Brothers, first gaining exposure on stations in Iowa and Nebraska.

The Father of Bluegrass Music

C ountry music has been examined by many authors, both in print and on the Internet, trying to explain it in intellectual terms - often with bewildering confusion. And the part of country music that has been analyzed the most is bluegrass. This is surprising since it is its pure simplicity, accompanied by outstanding musicians, which has attracted such a large audience to bluegrass. Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass Music, explained it this way: "To me bluegrass is really THE country music. It was meant for country people." Therefore, it is surprising that bluegrass gained strong support in urban areas at a time when the trend was to popularize country music. It took a proud, stubborn man like Bill Monroe to resist the pop tide and make blugrass what it is today.
T here are few performers who have had the solid country music background that William Smith Monroe had at a very early age. He was born September 13, 1911, on a farm in Jerusalem Ridge, near Rosine, Kentucky. His father, Buck, was a farmer, saw mill operator and noted step-dancer. His mother, Malissa, played fiddle, accordion and harmonica, and was a respected local singer of old-time ballads. Among his eight siblings, older brothers Harry and Birch played fiddle, and brother Charlie and sister Bertha played guitar. All of them were influenced by Bill's uncle, Pendleton Vandiver, the "Uncle Pen" about whom he would write an important song years later. Bill once told an interviewer, "he'd bring his fiddle and he'd stay a night or so, and after supper, why, we'd get up around him and listen to him fiddle - maybe an hour, hour and a half. My father would call bedtime then."

Would you like to see Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass Music, honored by a commemorative United States Postage Stamp? If you would, the time to act is NOW, and all you have to do is to write and mail a letter. Each year, the United States Postal Service considers the issuance of approximately 25 commemorative postage stamps. Under its guidelines , the honoree must have been deceased for at least 10 years, which in Bill Monroe's case will be September 9, 2006. The 95th anniversary of his birth, September 13, 2006, which is only 4 days later, would be a logical date for the issuance of the stamp. The guidelines further recommend that the process be started 3 years before the issuance year, which is 2003. The first step is for a citizens' committee to select, and narrow down to approximately 25, the worthy nominees for each year. This they do by considering letters, cards, petitions, etc., sent to them by the public at large. After that, the committee considers art work and other details for the stamp. Because Bill Monroe's music is appreciated worldwide, nominations from outside the USA would be very appropriate. If you would like to participate in this effort on behalf of a great American musical genius, write your letter to: Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee

Monroe's first recordings under his own name were sixteen tracks recorded for RCA in 1940 and 1941. He recorded for Columbia between 1945 and 1949; this period included seventeen tracks recorded with a lineup that helped define the new music called "bluegrass": Earl Scruggs on banjo, Lester Flatt on guitar and lead vocal, Chubby Wise on fiddle, and "Cedric Rainwater" (Howard Watts) on bass. In 1950 he signed with Decca and stayed with that label, and its successor, MCA, for the rest of his career. The RCA sessions have been collected on several releases, most recently on "The Essential Bill Monroe and the Monroe Brothers". The Columbia sessions are represented on "The Essential Bill Monroe, 1945-1949", a 2-disc set; the single disc "16 Gems" collects highlights of this period. The Decca recordings are collected on many compilations; the three Bear Family boxed sets offer all the studio recordings from 1950 through 1979, and are highly recommended for completists. The Music of Bill Monroe: 1936-1994 is a good four-disc overview of his entire career, from the Monroe Brothers to his last recordings.

Biography: Father of Bluegrass Music
Singer, mandolinist, songwriter and bandleader Bill Monroe is widely considered the "Father of Bluegrass Music". The style takes its name from that of Monroe's band, the Blue Grass Boys, which in turn was named for Monroe's native state of Kentucky. He first performed and recorded with his brother Charlie, as the Monroe Brothers. Following their split in 1938, Bill organized his own band, which he continued to lead until his death in 1996. Many of the great performers in bluegrass got their start as Blue Grass Boys. Monroe became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1939 and was a regular performer there for over 50 years. Monroe's style combined the old-time mountain music of his youth, elements of the blues, and an emphasis on driving, virtuoso instrumentals. He steadfastly maintained his acoustic string band sound even at a time when most of country music went electric. His vocal style featured high, keening harmonies, often described by others as "high lonesome".

Creative Perfumes Country music belongs to America.
I was determined to carve out a music of my own. I didn't want to copy anybody. Bluegrass is wonderful music. I'm glad I originated it. Practice every time you get a chance. Bluegrass has brought more people together and made more friends than any music in the world. You meet people at festivals and renew acquaintances year after year.

From Bill Monroe to Dolly Parton, bluegrass holds its own
VIDEO WorldBeat heads for the hills to hear the sounds of bluegrass
Windows Media November 12, 1999 Web posted at: 4:24 p.m. EST (2124 GMT) A CNN WorldBeat Report LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (CNN) Alison Krauss mixes it with folk; Dolly Parton used it to return to her roots with her latest album, "The Grass Is Blue." But attendees of the recent International Bluegrass Music Awards in Louisville's Palace Theater don't need these high-profile country singers to tell them that bluegrass, a country-music offshoot that traces its origins to before World War II, is cooler than ever. Bluegrass has become one of the fastest-growing forms of music in the United States. And with bluegrass bands hailing from as far afield as Japan and the Czech Republic, it's now becoming a truly international art form.

Monroe, William Smith
Monroe was born on a farm at Jerusalem Ridge, Kentucky, the last of eight children in a poor, backwoods family. Both his parents were traditional Appalachian musicians (father step-dancer; mother instrumentalist and singer) and so were most of the children. His mother died when he was 10 and his father about 1922. His older brothers, Birch (1901-82) and Charlie (1903-75) moved north to work in the automobile and oil refining industries, but Bill lived first with his father's brother and then with his mother's brother, Pendleton Vanderver, who was also a considerable influence on his music. Texas Looking to adopt? Pregnant? In 1929, when he was 18, Bill moved to join his brothers in East Chicago. The three brothers and their girlfriends joined a team of dancers and also played music on local radio stations. In 1934 or 35 they were sponsored by a laxative manufacturer to go on tour, but Birch dropped out of the group (temporarily). They made their first record in 1936, for Bluebird followed by about 60 more tracks for Bluebird and well over 200 for other studios. In 1995 he received the US National Medal of Arts from President Clinton.
