In he hired Earl Scruggs , who similarly elevated the role of the banjo . (born September 13, 1911, Rosine, Kentucky;
died September 9, 1996, Springfield, Tennessee) I n 1938, William Smith Monroe named his band the Blue Grass Boys in honor of his home state (Kentucky) and their distinctive brand of music came to identify a style, of which Bill Monroe is the father. Although he played several string instruments, the mandolin became his primary vehicle and basic sound of Bluegrass. The Blue Grass Boys made their first appearance in October 1939 on WSM’s Grand Ole Opry after Bill had attained prominence as part of the Monroe Brothers. He and brother Charlie (1903 - 1975) recorded 60 songs for Bluebird Records between 1936 and 1938, including “Kentucky Waltz,” which he wrote. Monroe has inspired countless pickers and will forever be remembered for that High and Lonesome Sound. The Legend Lives On:

Father Of Bluegrass Music

From All Movie Guide
Bill Monroe was inarguably the single most important and influential figure in the history of bluegrass music. Fusing the fiddle and madolin sounds of the Eastern Kentucky Hills with the guitars of rural blues and adding a streamlined speed and emotional passion to the music, Monroe was truly the father of bluegrass and a brilliant musician by any standards. This program features performances by Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, with interviews and performances from a host of special guests, including Dolly Parton, Lester Flat, Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Garica, John Hartford, Marty Stuart, Del McCoury, Peter Rowan, Tim O'Brian and noted bluegrass authority Paul McCartney. REMEMBERING BILL MONROE
SEPTEMBER 10, 1996
TRANSCRIPT The Kentucky born "Father of Bluegrass" music died Monday at the age of 84. Singer and instrumentalist Bill Monroe introduced the world to what are now familiar sounds to many of us, in 1938.
Read about the life, and hear samples of the sounds of Bill Monroe.
MS. FARNSWORTH: He was known as the "father of bluegrass" music. Bill Monroe, the Kentucky-born singer, mandolin player, and composer, died yesterday at age 84. Here to discuss the legacy of Bill Monroe are two people who knew him well. Ricky Skaggs is a Grammy Award-winning bluegrass and country music musician. Charles Wolfe, professor of English, cultural history, and folklore at Middle Tennessee State University, has written a biography of Bill Monroe which will be published early next year. Thank you both for being with us. Ricky Skaggs, what's your first memory of Bill Monroe? RICKY SKAGGS, Musician: My first memory of Bill Monroe, I was six years old. I saw him at Martha, Kentucky. He came to my hometown, uh, and played a show with the Bluegrass Boys and, uh, my mom and dad took me to see the show, and, uh, I'd been playing around that area for a little bit, so the neighbors kind of knew that I could play and sing, so theythey started aggravating Mr. Monroe saying let little Ricky Skaggs get up and sing, and, uh, finally after about twenty or thirty minutes of that, I think he was tired. He had enough of it, and he said, okay, well, where's he at, you know

Bluegrass on Folkways
... From the Archive
Elvis Presley performed Bill Monroe's song, "Blue Moon of Kentucky," on the B side of his first single on Sun Records in 1954. A reporter once asked Monroe if it bothered him that Elvis had recorded a reworked version his signature tune; "Nossir," he said, "Them were some powerful checks."
FOLKWAYS ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Bill Monroe (1911-1996) Featured Smithsonian Folkways Recording Artist Bill Monroe is credited with inventing the high energy, fast tempo, hard-edged style of country music known as bluegrass. The genre takes its name from Monroe's band, The Blue Grass Boys. From the 1940s, Monroe and The Blue Grass Boys defined the sound and style of classic bluegrassa five-piece acoustic string band, playing precisely and rapidly, switching solos and singing in a high-pitched, gospel tinged voice. He embodied the art form throughout the century, influencing and mentoring generations of bluegrass musicians from Flatt and Scruggs to The Stanley Brothers. He continued to tour and perform through the 1990s until his death after a stroke in 1996. Monroe was raised on an isolated family farm in Rosine, Kentucky. His earliest musical influences derived from church and social traditions. When traveling singing teachers visited the area, the local churches participated in the regional tradition of "shape-note" singing schools. Hampered by poor vision from birth, Monroe did not learn to read the music but developed a keen ear for the stark harmonies of this heritage. His talented family helped shape his musical craft. His father was a locally known step-dancer while his mother sang traditional ballads and folk songs and played both accordion and fiddle. His Uncle Pen played fiddle at community dances and brought Monroe along to play with him on several occasions. In these preteen years, Monroe perfected his guitar and mandolin skills. He credits Arnold Schultz, a local African-American railroad worker who was both a fiddler and a guitarist, and his Scottish ancestry with influencing his style.

William Smith Monroe
September 13, 1911 -
September 9, 1996
My Introduction To Blue Grass. by Evan N. Reilly Years later, when I was more of a master of Monroe's chosen instrument, I was on the bus with Bill and, again, had my mandolin. But I was playing tunes for him, now. I played "Bill's Dream" and a far way look came into his eyes. He said that he hadn't hear d that tune in years and asked me if he had ever told me the story about that tune. Bill then proceeded to tell me the story behind the writing of the tune; he had had a dream one night that one of his hunting dogs had fallen into an old dry well on the farm. The next day, one of the dogs did fall into a well and Bill wrote the tune to remember the event. These events are some the highlights of my relationship with Bill Monroe. I have had the opportunity to play with him on stage, as well as off-stage. Several times, he exposed the fierce, driving force of his teaching to me, putting his mandolin in my face and playing a passage until I got it right. It was as if I had been locked in his grip (and his grip is another tale) and held hostage to his musical vision. Monroe's musical legacy will be felt wherever the fiddle and banjo get together with the guitar and bass, wherever the mandolin beats out the stark, powerful outlines of Monroe's music.
