Correct System Design Group
Welcome to the MOBY-Homepage
MOBY is a project, that has grown in many years in the Correct System Design Group of the Department of Computing Science here at C.v.O. University of Oldenburg . Today MOBY contains a powerful C++ class liberary, on which several tools are based. Moby/PLC Moby/FT Moby/OZ Moby/PLC comprises a graphical editor and simulator for PLC-Automata, a formal description technique for real-time systems. Furthermore, this tool provides connections to several model checker for Timed Automata and code generation for Programmable Logic Controller (PLCs). The Moby/PLC tool has been presented on CeBIT'98 in Hannover. Moby/FT is a tool for supporting fault tree analysis. It comprises a graphical editor for fault trees with several functions for the verification of these. In particular, a connection to the real-time model-checker of Uppaal is realized by what the correctness or the completeness of the tree can be displayed automatically. Moby/OZ is a graphical editor to build Z-Spezifications and also specifications in Object Z, the object-based version of Z. Moby/OZ allows structured development through hierarchy concepts and is able to handle various text formats.

THE VARIETIES OF WRITERLY DISSIDENCE
Criticism of Ismail Kadare's claims to dissidence aren't exactly wrong. They aren't exactly right, either . . .
a MobyLives guest column

by Wayne Miller
Renata Dumitrascu, in her column
It seems to me there are two ways to approach the issue of dissidence: (1) We can talk about writers who lived dissident lives (meaning "stood in front of tanks"), in which case Kadare's dissidence can be questioned, as can that of many other revered Russian and Eastern European writers. Or else (2) we can talk about authors who produced dissident work (meaning work that challenged a system's aesthetic and political dogmatism), in which case, Kadare clearly qualifies. (Of course, the two are not entirely discrete, as producing dissident work was often a potential life risk, since the ire of a dictator such as Hoxha tended to be dangerously unpredictable.) The core difference between these approaches is that the second focuses first and foremost on the art itself, while the first emphasizes biography over art.
Yet, despite his study in Moscow, Kadare was one of the first Albanian writers to oppose socialist realism, beginning with the book of poems

KADARE IS NO SOLZHENITSYN
a MobyLives guest column
by Renata Dumitrascu
A look at Kadare's career offers insight into the roots of this conceited outlook and shakes the very foundation of his claim that he was even a dissident at all.
Kadare studied in Moscow in the 50's at a time communist oppression of average citizens was at an all time high in the entire Eastern block. That meant a full scholarship in the USSR at a time when only the most purebred, unblemished party clones were invited to study in the capital of the great empire, to better indoctrinate them for future positions of power in their home countries. To even be considered for such a scholarship was a feat that required a thorough background investigation of him and his entire family no ordinary citizen could pass successfully. Certainly not one with dissident tendencies.
In the 70's we find him serving as a delegate to the People's Assembly, Albania's version of the Politburo, and being allowed the astonishing privilege of traveling abroad freely and even publishing there. Quite a staggering resume for a dissident. This was at a time behind the Iron Curtain when to even walk on the sidewalk on which a foreign embassy was situated got one detained and roughed up. Kadare "smuggled" his manuscripts to France where they were published and hailed as creations of a heroic opposer crushed by a monolithic communistic juggernaut. But besides having a book and a poem here and there banned (many writers of that period did, in an atmosphere of rabid censorship), we always find Kadare firmly ensconced in the bosom of power.

34. MELUS: The Golden Carp And Moby Dick: Rudolfo Anaya's Multi-Culturalism - Critic

The Golden Carp and Moby Dick: Rudolfo Anaya's Multi-Culturalism - Critical Essay Theresa M. Kanoza In Bless Me, Ultima, Rudolfo Anaya presents a world of opposites in the New Mexican village of Guadalupe. The parents of the young protagonist Antonio have strikingly different temperaments, as dissimilar to each other as the backgrounds from which they hail. Maria Luna Marez, the pious daughter of Catholic farmers from the fertile El Puerto valley, steers her son toward the priesthood and a ministry in an agrarian settlement. Gabriel Marez, Antonio's adventurous father, is descended from a long line of nomadic horsemen; he expects his son to share his wanderlust, and he hopes that as compadres they will explore the vanishing llano (plains). The thrust of Anaya's bildungsroman, however, is not that maturation necessitates exclusionary choices between competing options, but that wisdom and experience allow one to look beyond difference to behold unity. Bless Me, Ultima has earned acclaim for its "cultural uniqueness" and is lauded for such distinctive Chicano features as its use of Aztec myth and symbol, its thematic emphasis on family structures, and its linguistic survivals. Furthermore, Anaya is renowned as one of the "Big Three" of the Chicano canon, alongside Tomas Rivera and Rolando Hinojosa (Sommers 146-47). Set in a sacred place imbued with a spiritual presence and long inhabited by indigenous peoples, his book presents a world where the Anglo is of little consequence to its strong Chicano characters.(3)

Assassinations Foretold in Moby Dick! The following challenge was made by Michael Drosnin: When my critics find a message about the assassination of a prime minister encrypted in Moby Dick, I'll believe them.

Abraham Lincoln
President Abraham Lincoln was shot dead on April 14, 1865.
Yitzhak Rabin
Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin was shot dead on November 4, 1995. His assassin was Igal Amir, who fired three shots of which one hit Rabin fatally in the chest. Amir was a student at Bar-Ilan University, and associated with an underground group Eyal which modelled itself on a historical terrorist group called Lehi. Amir was angered by Rabin's role in the "Peace Process" and especially by the Oslo accords.
