Hollywood tough-guy, Robert Mitchum, dead at 79
'The image was created to enhance my lack of glamour'
July 19, 1999
Web posted at: 6:26 p.m. EDT (2226 GMT)
LOS ANGELES (CNN) Robert Mitchum, a rugged leading man and sometime bad boy who defined cool before Hollywood knew what it was, died at home in his sleep Tuesday at the age of 79. Mitchum had been suffering from emphysema and lung cancer, and died at 5 a.m. in his Santa Barbara County home, according to a family spokesman. Mitchum starred in more than 100 movies, including "The Story of G.I. Joe" and "The Sundowners," and played the fearsome ex-convict in the original "Cape Fear." Mitchum remained a star despite a limited education, being jailed for marijuana possession and a contempt for directors and studio bosses. His effortless nonchalance once caused Katherine Hepburn to snap, "You know you can't act, and if you hadn't been good-looking you would never have gotten a picture." Mitchum already had lived a colorful life before he appeared in his first film. He was born August 6, 1917, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, as Robert Charles Duran Mitchum. His father, James, was a soldier and barroom brawler who was Scotch-Irish on his father's side and Blackfoot Indian on his mother's. Mitchum's mother, Ann, was a Norwegian immigrant.

A lobby card from Raoul Walsh 's PURSUED (1947) featuring Mitchum and Teresa Wright along with Judith Anderson Dean Jagger and Harry Carey, Jr. This dark story of a young man out to discover the truth about his past and the woman who grew up as his sister but loves him as a wife is considered by some to be the first film-noir western. I highly recommend it. Three Roberts: Mitchum flanked by Robert Ryan and Robert Young in a still from CROSSFIRE (1947), a noir war film about the mysterious death of a Jewish soldier and the ensuing investigations. A still with Jane Greer in OUT OF THE PAST (1947) which also featured Kirk Douglas . This story of a former detective's secret past was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry in 1991 and is a highly regarded film noir classic. Go to the next page

  • "I haven't felt better since I been off a horse." as Bill Tabeshaw in TILL THE END OF TIME (1946). "How big a chump can you get to be? I was finding out." as Jeff Bailey in OUT OF THE PAST. "I'm too young to die. How about you?" as Dan Milner in HIS KIND OF WOMAN (1951). "It's quite simple really. I'm just not very good at resisting temptation." as Charles Delacro in THE GRASS IS GREENER (1960).

A VODKA-SOAKED AFTERNOON WITH ROBERT MITCHUM. BY DICK LOCHTE R obert Mitchum, who died on July 1 at the age of 79, was too much for this, the All-Things-In-Moderation Generation. He did what he wanted to do when he wanted to do it. He lived hard. He played hard. He drank. He smoked (emphysema and lung cancer finally did him in). One of his last professional tasks was to remind us that we're carnivores and that Brussels sprouts are NOT what's for dinner. Mitchum was the genuine article the Hollywood tough guy as hard-boiled as the heroes he played. He'd walked the walk, a runaway who hit the rails as "a thin, ferret-faced kid" of 14 and who, two years later, wound up on a chain gang in Georgia. He was a drifter, a boxer, a shoe salesman and even a poet. He wrote a play optioned by the Theater Guild and an oratorio that Orson Welles produced and directed in the Hollywood Bowl in 1938. And, eventually, he became an actor. In the course of a long, full career, he created a unique and extremely popular on-screen image. Somehow he managed to be both cool and reckless, heroic and vaguely sinister, laconic to the point of inertia, yet still a man of action. And above all, he was tough. Today's movie tough guys don't even come close. Well, maybe Michael Madsen, but first he'll have to stop cutting cops' ears off. As for the others, next to Mitchum, Eastwood looks perplexed. Nolte seems punch-drunk. De Niro, Pacino and Keitel are kids playing grown-up. And as for Willis and Stallone and Schwarzenegger, can you imagine Mitchum wearing a Planet Hollywood T-shirt?

"The only difference between me and other actors is I've spent more time in jail." -Robert Mitchum When you see actors and musicians who live their lives as if they are real life tough guys, it's funny to remember that half of these guys experiences with the police are from watching COPS on TV. Take Kid Rock, for instance. He wears the monicker AMERICAN BADASS , but with the "roughest" part of his past consisting of being a member of a breakdancing crew named "The Furious Funkers", you realize that AMERICAN CANDYASS is a more fitting title. Don't get me wrong. Being in and out of jail alone is no way to deserve a badass title (I'm sure nobody would throw Jim Bakker or Robert Downey, Jr. that nickname). But when you lead an amazing "real life" as well as produce entertainment that truly portrays the BADASS image, you've got what it takes to be called that for real. Pound for pound, you just don't get more badass than Robert Mitchum. Let's just look at this guy's childhood for a moment. His father was killed in a train accident when he was just 2, and after 12 years of living with his Aunt, he ran away from home and wandered the roads. He made ends meet by rolling hapless bums he came across, and while strolling through Georgia, he was picked up for vagrancy and forced to be a part of a chain gang.

A Tribute to Robert Mitchum
Robert Mitchum's part-Native-American father died in a train accident when "Mitch" was two. He and his brother John (also an actor) and their siblings were raised by his mother and stepfather, a British soldier, in various places on the East Coast. He was tough kid, and spent much of his teen years out on the road. At 14 he was charged with vagrancy and ended up on a chain gang in Georgia. Like one of his movie characters, he eventually escaped. As a young man, Mitchum held many different jobs, including a professional boxer (27 fights) and a stint as a ghostwriter for the popular astrologer, Carroll Righter. His first try at acting came with a Long Beach, California amateur theater group. While working at Lockheed Aircraft, he became temporarily blind because of job stress. It was at this time that he accepted the first of what would become dozens of small roles in films. In 1945, he received an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actor for the role of Lt. Walker in

              Robert Mitchum retrospective
As the NFT celebrates Robert Mitchum's career, Geoffrey MacNab recalls a star who was the epitome of laid-back style
              Published: 08 July 2005
"It's a sin for an actor to get rich"; "I just do it for the money"; "In 26 years, all I've changed is my underwear"; "I've played everything except midgets and women". Leaf through the old interviews with Robert Mitchum and these are the remarks that leap out: wilful, contradictory, humorous, self-deprecating, evasive. The hood-eyed big man rarely revealed what he was thinking. Whether he was playing private eyes, cowboys, ex-cons or psychopathic preachers, he invariably gave the same laconic, understated performance. Film-makers rhapsodised over an acting technique that looked effortless. Mitchum had never been to drama school; he appeared to do little in front of the camera, and yet he could convey ruthlessness in one role, then appear to be the soul of avuncular geniality in the next. Mitchum's career is currently being celebrated in a season of his films at the National Film Theatre in London, but he himself wasn't the type to take his work too seriously. The director Ken Annakin, who wanted to cast him in a project called The Gold Lovers in the early 1960s, says: "When I first met him, he tried to get me to smoke pot. A number of ladies arrived at his apartment. It was clear that he wanted to enjoy life and try a little of everything."
