After sharing details of their own writerly backgrounds, Paul and Pankaj close by considering the case of another writer who grappled with spiritual concerns. (But keep an eye out this weekend for Paul's coda to the entire conversation...) Pankaj Mishra: I wonder if someone like Thomas Merton had an advantage over someone like Naipaul ( see yesterday's exchange ) in that he could work within a spiritual tradition that had not been as damaged by its encounter with modernity or colonialism (which are often experienced as the same thing in Asia and Africa) and use its resources to question the ways of the modern world and also open himself without bringing in stern value judgements to other traditions, as he did when he went to India in the last year of his life and met Buddhists and Hindus. Paul Elie: Doesn't every serious writer need to see himself as apart or alienated from society? I suspect so, even though I don't like the look of those particular words on the screen. Maybe this is why worldly success has been a problem for writers from Tolstoy to Naipaul, and why the second act of so many literary lives is the story of the writer's struggle to make sense of success, to recast the original alienation so as to accommodate the ways in which he or she is now joined through words to thousands of strangers. Success was one of Thomas Merton's biggest problems, as a monk and as a writer. The success of

Bill Borrows 25 September 2003 PAUL MERTON MOURNS COURAGEOUS WIFE By Fiona Cummins And Rosa Prince HEARTBROKEN Paul Merton told last night how his wife Sarah died in peace after battling cancer for 19 months. The Have I Got News For You star said in a statement: "She faced the situation with courage and died serenely without pain. Her family will miss her deeply." Writer and producer Sarah, 41, spurned conventional medicine and set out to heal herself with alternative therapies after learning she had breast cancer in February last year. Her condition suddenly worsened two weeks ago. She died on Tuesday with her husband of three months at her bedside. Advertisement Paul, 46, said: "After her initial devastating diagnosis Sarah successfully lived with the disease for the next 19 months. "She refused chemotherapy because she knew it would finish her off. Instead, she boosted her immune system with a mixture of nutritional therapy, yoga, meditation, positive thinking and laughter. "Consequently, she led a full and active life right up to the last couple of weeks when her condition suddenly worsened." A close friend of Paul's said last night: "He is understandably devastated. He's a very private man and he now needs time to grieve."

"... a supportive crowd wills on six brave performers who arrive with no script and not the faintest idea of what will happen. Through improvisation they create whole sketches and comic dramas that are amazingly inventive and sometimes take off into flights of surreal brilliance. 'Whose Line Is it Anyway' is a pale TV imitation".
The Daily Telegraph. "Still going strong since 1985 we gather every Wednesday and Sunday evening at The Comedy Store in London, take suggestions from the audience and make them and ourselves laugh. Simple as that. I suppose we'll still be doing it when we have zimmer frames and false teeth. Lots more information at ComedyStorePlayers.com Home About Neil All That Mullarkey ... www.iHenry.com
