http://thecomedyschool.com/merton.html
Despite coming to public attention as a team captain on 'Have I Got News For You', Paul Merton was already a successful comedy writer, and a founder member of the Comedy Store Players with whom he still performs.
As a sketch writer Paul excelled, especially on 'Sticky Moments' With Julian Clary. Improvised comedy show 'Whose Line Is It Anyway' also provided a platform for his razor sharp spontaneous wit.
Two series of 'Paul Merton - The Series' offered an inspired mixture of surreal stories and ingenious sight gags. Very much in the spirit of Spike Milligan’s Q, it was inventive without resorting to coarse language and violent slapstick.
After seven nominations for a BAFTA award for Best Entertainment Performance, Paul Merton finally won the award in April 2003.
His talent for improvisation continues to serve him well as host of BBC's 'Room 101' and a regular on 'Have I Got News For You'.

Don't tell me you haven't done it. On my first day in New York a guy asked me if I knew where Central Park was. When I told him I didn't he said, 'Do you mind if I mug you here?' My school days were the happiest days of my life, which should give you some indication of the misery I've endured over the past twenty-five years. WELCOME TO JUST A MINUTE!
    TAPES
The question I get asked most in your emails is ... Where can I get tapes of Just A Minute? So here's the info you are seeking.
The BBC, God bless 'em, has published 12 cassettes of Just A Minute. These can still be bought from the BBC's shop or from outlets like Amazon and many others. I won't do links seeing as I'm not on commission! But have a look around the Internet at audio shops and talking book shops and the like and you'll find them.
It now seems to be an annual event so the tapes must sell reasonably well. Anyway if you do buy one, drop a note to the BBC saying how much you enjoyed it and how much you'd like to hear more. Can't hurt anyway!
Here's the 12 tapes that have been sold.

If you also miss the good old days of C4 showing "Whose Line is it Anyway" then this is the fringe show for you! Comedy at it's very finest and at its rawest state - coming straight off the cuff of the four talented performers, lead by the genius of Paul Merton. If you've ever had reason to doubt how talented Merton is, this show is conclusive proof of his timing and ability. John H 14.01.05 Have your say:

I was born in New York, New York, on July 31, 1944, the middle child between two sisters, Stephanie and Vanessa. I grew up in Hastings-on-Hudson, a village of about 8000 outside the city, in a house that Vanessa and her family live in today. My father, born in Philadelphia the son of immigrant parents, was a professor of sociology at Columbia University. He is now University Professor Emeritus at Columbia, having meanwhile been awarded the National Medal of Science for founding the sociology of science and for his contributions to sociological knowledge such as the self-fulfilling prophecy and the focus group. My mother, from a multigenerational southern New Jersey Methodist/Quaker family, stayed at home. She died in 1992. My mother's mother and many (at one time 25) cats completed the household that shared my childhood.
Hastings was a mixed middle-class and blue-collar town with local employment dominated by a wire and cable company and a chemical plant. Despite this composition and the town's small size, the local public school provided a fine education opportunity. In a graduating class of only some 90, I nevertheless was able to take mathematics through the calculus and five years of science (two in physics including a MIT-designed course). I was a good student but not at the top of my class. I played varsity football and ran track, neither with great distinction. Among my classmates were the sons of the Columbia physicists and Nobel laureates

    Ordinary excellence
Activist, writer and thinker still inspires devoted Thomas Merton Society By Kimberly Winston
UNION-TRIBUNE June 9, 2005 In some sense, Thomas Merton was an everyman. To the center of his being, the Trappist monk, who died in 1968, felt the universal longing for a deep, meaningful union with something greater than himself. To Merton, a convert to Catholicism, that something was God, and he found him in solitude.
Merton Legacy Trust Thomas Merton, in the early 1960s outside the hermitage at Cistercian Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky. "The real wilderness of the hermit is the wilderness of the human spirit, which is at once his and everyone else's," Merton wrote in the 1950s from the inside of a Kentucky monastery that valued silence and solitude. "What he seeks in that wilderness is not himself, not human company, and consolation, but God." But not every man is so gifted at sharing his experience of that longing that he becomes a best-selling author. Not every man is also a poet, a peace activist, an interfaith pioneer and a mystic. Not every man has so many enthusiasts around the world that he has an international fellowship dedicated to preserving and promoting his vision of a just world.

    Steve Coogan
Character actor Steve Coogan is most famous for two characters: unctuous television host Alan Partridge (as seen in Knowing Me, Knowing Yule ) and dim-bulb Paul Calf ( Paul Calf's Video Diary and its sequel Pauline Calf's Video Wedding ). In his 1995 series Coogan's Run , he got to play six different characters who co-exist in the same connected universe (or at least Paul Calf manages to cameo in each story). In "Get Calf" Paul is the center of attention as gangsters come after him. "Dearth of a Salesman" shows the life of a shallow salesman. "Handyman For All Seasons," an elderly village fix-it man in rural England must fight progress. "natural born quizzers" reveals the life stories of two nutters who escape from jail and hope to wreak revenge for an incident on a television school quiz show 20 years earlier. Rounding out the series are "Thursday Night Fever" and "The Curator." His latest creation is Portuguese pop singer (and slimeball) Tony Ferrino . Coogan's first dramatic role came in 1997's The Fix , where he played a crusading journalist who uncovers a soccer scandal. Alan Partridge finally resurfaced in 1997 in the "fly on a wall" mockumentary series
