Original at 6 Degrees Jack Cardiff on cinematography
by Justin Bowyer Veteran cinematographer Jack Cardiff talked with his latest director, Paul Merton, as part of the Raindance Film Festival's State of Independence. 6degrees attended and in the first of a two-part report, followed Cardiff from his early days in show business up to his collaboration with Michael Powell Paul Merton - Jack, your parents were in show business. What did they do? Jack Cardiff - Well, My father lived in Watford and played football for Watford. That's why I am a bit of a fan for Watford. Pity he wasn't in the Arsenal or Man United, but there you are - he played for Watford. My mother lived in Watford and they got married. My father then decided to go into show business and he set of with my mum and he started off as a dancer. He begun with a partner called Morrin and they did what was called simultaneous dancing with a top hat and a cane. They had to be within half an inch of perfection. It went very well at the start and they had a command performance and King Edward gave my old man a cigar and told him it was the finest dancing he had ever seen in his life. So that was good advertising for them.

Paul Merton When he joined Equity, Paul changed his surname from Martin to Merton, after the area where he grew up. Despite first coming to public attention as a team captain on Have I Got News For You , Merton was already a successful comedy writer, and a regular at The Comedy Store As a sketch writer Merton excelled, especially on Sticky Moments With Julian Clary . Improvised comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway also provided a platform for his razor sharp spontaneous wit. Despite a bemused reception, two series of Paul Merton - The Series offered an inspired mixture of surreal stories and ingenious sight gags. Very much in the spirit of Spike Milligan’s Q , it was inventive without resorting to coarse language and violent slapstick. His talent for improvisation, however, continues to serve him well as host of

Paul Merton - The Series UK, C4 (Hat Trick Productions), Sketch, Colour, 1991 Starring: Paul Merton, John Irwin, Robert Harley The deeply deadpan standup star Paul Merton caused ripples as a regular in C4's improv parlour-game series Whose Line Is It Anyway? and then made a huge splash as one of the two resident team captains in BBC2's satirical panel-game Have I Got News For You , both series made by Hat Trick Productions. In the latter, Merton's stream-of-consciousness patter, poking into bizarre and surreal areas, became so popular that he was offered his own Hat Trick series, commissioned by C4. Paul Merton - The Series The first run of Paul Merton - The Series drew a mixed reaction from critics who, perhaps, expected too much from the Have I Got News For You favourite. Certainly, Merton was funnier in that BBC2 series, but this was because it played to his ultimate strength: his ability to march into unscripted territory without a safety net. (The programmes were pre-recorded, but Merton's contributions were true spur-of-the-moment improvisations.) Strangely, without this 'live-show' danger, the surrealism carried less bite.

Ever since the first time I saw him on TV in Whose Line is it anyway, his extremely dry, sarcastic, spontaneous and bizarre style of humour cracks me up every time. In my opinion, one of his best television contributions is not his TV series, but his regular slot on Have I Got News For you, where he always stands ...

    The Hobbit meets Star Wars
Strider: Aragorn son of Arathorn, I'm the captain of the Rangers. They tell me you're looking for passage to Rivendell. Frodo: Yes, indeed. If you're a fast Ranger. Strider: Fast? You've never heard of Strider? Frodo: Should I have? Strider: I've made the Gondor run in less than twelve leagues! Frodo reacts to Strider's stupid attempt to impress them with obvious misinformation. Strider: I've outrun armies of Orcs, not the local half-Orcs, mind you. I'm talking about the big Uruks of Mordor now. I'm fast enough for you, old hobbit. What's the cargo? Frodo: Only passengers. Myself, the boy, two other hobbits with funny names, and no questions asked Strider: What is it? Some kind of local trouble? Frodo: Let's just say we'd like to avoid any Mordorian entanglements. Strider: Well, that's the trick, isn't it? And it's going to cost you something extra. Ten thousand, all in advance. Sam: Ten thousand? We could almost buy our own Ringwraith for that! Strider: But who's going to control it, kid? You?

    Class Bios of Paul Lazarsfeld
Bio 1... by Lisa M. Cortez
Radio Listening In America (1948) and Voting (1954). Paul F. Lazarsfeld died in New York in 1976. , Lazarsfeld states, "…the people who already knew how they were going to vote read and listened to more campaign material than the people who still did not know how they would vote. The group which the campaign manager is presumably most eager to reach -the as yet undecided- is the very group which is less likely to read or listen to this propaganda." Based on observations in this research, the idea of the two-step flow of communication was discovered. Researchers found that voters who made a decision late in the campaign were not likely to be influenced by the media, but rather by opinion leaders who swayed their vote. This idea continued to influence other social theories. The diffusion of innovations model was eventually derived from the two-step flow concept. Long after Lazarsfeld completed his research, his contributions continued to encourage the evolution of the field. Lazarsfeld is also widely recognized for his research on the effects of radio on its listeners. He carried out detailed investigations of the radio-listening habits of the American public with his colleagues, psychologist Hadley Cantril and Frank Stanton, the head of research at CBS. The research was initially begun at Princeton and funded by the Rockefeller Foundation because of its interest in improving the quality of radio programs. Eventually, the research lead to the famous broadcast of H.G. Welles’ "War of the Worlds." Orson Welles adapted the story for radio using U.S. locations and it was broadcast to resemble radio news. One out of every six listeners believed the broadcast was not fictitious and panicked. Lazarsfeld’s radio research not only studied the impact of the radio, but also what type of people were more likely to be influenced by it and listened the most. As discussed in
