The Elegant Variation
A Literary Weblog.
TEV DEFINED
  • The Elegant Variation is "Fowler’s (1926, 1965) term for the inept writer’s overstrained efforts at freshness or vividness of expression. Prose guilty of elegant variation calls attention to itself and doesn’t permit its ideas to seem naturally clear. It typically seeks fancy new words for familiar things, and it scrambles for synonyms in order to avoid at all costs repeating a word, even though repetition might be the natural, normal thing to do: The audience had a certain bovine placidity, instead of The audience was as placid as cows. Elegant variation is often the rock, and a stereotype, a clich©, or a tired metaphor the hard place between which inexperienced or foolish writers come to grief. The familiar middle ground in treating these homely topics is almost always the safest. In untrained or unrestrained hands, a thesaurus can be dangerous."

Sam Cafe's duck spring rolls Pomegranate's lamb burger The meandering gourmets September 23, 2002 By Barbara Ludman STUNG, perhaps, by the burgeoning of Greenside as the newest suburb where trendoids go to dine, Melville is reasserting its gastronomic credentials in late October with a two-day Meander. Diners will be meandering among very different eateries in what promoters are describing as "off-the-wall Melville", starting their "progressive dinners" with sundowners at an art gallery. A "tour guide" will issue a "passport" so diners will know where they're expected to pitch up, for guests will be divided into three different groups crossing and crisscrossing Seventh Avenue. Four restaurants, an art gallery and sponsors Monis are involved; groups are named after the sponsor's sparkling juices.

Judi,
The general principle is that they are used to shut down the immune
system so the antiinflammatory medications (steroids) can do their job,
healing can take place, and the steroids can be weaned. Every time I hit
a certain dose of steroids (going down) my function worsens.Poor
strength, increase spasm and dyscoordination. It improves dramatically
on higher dose steroids, and improved much on the cytoxin. It just got that the cure was worse than the disease. The key was, I still had inflammation smoldering-that difference between myel-itis and -opathy. Let me know what happens! William H. Scheide examines
the Gutenberg Bible. Location designators: ExI, Kane, GA, WHS, and RHT. There are three major groupings of incunabula in the Library: I. The General Collection (ExI) II. Kane Collection and III. The Scheide Library. For details about holdings of of incunabula in the Princeton University Library, see the checked copy of Goff's incunabula bibliography. It can be consulted in the Munger (Kane) room of the Library. See: Frederick R. Goff. Incunabula in American Libraries. Third Census. (New York, 1964) [(ExB) 0225.398]. The University owns about 500 incunabula (books printed 1450-1500); in addition, there are about 150 in the Scheide Library (privately held but accessible to University and other scholars.) According to Goff, Princeton ranks twenty-fifth among the twenty-five largest collections of incunabula in American libraries. Moreover, "these twenty-five libraries account for almost seventy per cent of the total number recorded in American ownership." There are special files providing important access to the Library's collection of incunabula. They are: (1) chronological by date of printing (2) place of printing (3) printers and publishers and (4) a special incunabula shelf list. These files are kept in the reception room of the main rooms of the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections.

USC THIS SITE History professor's book looks at America's first modern celebrity By Marshall Swanson The early 20th century had Harry Houdini. The 1980s had Evel Knievel.
But a century before Houdini thrilled the country with his sensational escape attempts or Knievel jumped his motorcycle over canyons, there was Sam Patch.
Sam Patch, The Famous Jumper (Hill and Wang), has won high praise from reviewers ranging from The Christian Science Monitor to The Chicago Tribune and Kirkus Reviews
As a child laborer in a Pawtucket, R.I., textile mill, Patch started jumping off waterfalls that powered mills for fun with other boys his age.
He was immortalized in the works of Hawthorne and Melville, and his fame inspired portrayals of him on the London stage. Andrew Jackson named his favorite horse after Patch, and he shared the national spotlight with Davy Crockett, legendary river man Mike Fink, and a fictitious New York fireman named Mose the Bowery Boy.

THE VARIETIES OF WRITERLY DISSIDENCE
Criticism of Ismail Kadare's claims to dissidence aren't exactly wrong. They aren't exactly right, either . . .
a MobyLives guest column

by Wayne Miller
Renata Dumitrascu, in her column
It seems to me there are two ways to approach the issue of dissidence: (1) We can talk about writers who lived dissident lives (meaning "stood in front of tanks"), in which case Kadare's dissidence can be questioned, as can that of many other revered Russian and Eastern European writers. Or else (2) we can talk about authors who produced dissident work (meaning work that challenged a system's aesthetic and political dogmatism), in which case, Kadare clearly qualifies. (Of course, the two are not entirely discrete, as producing dissident work was often a potential life risk, since the ire of a dictator such as Hoxha tended to be dangerously unpredictable.) The core difference between these approaches is that the second focuses first and foremost on the art itself, while the first emphasizes biography over art.
Yet, despite his study in Moscow, Kadare was one of the first Albanian writers to oppose socialist realism, beginning with the book of poems
