University of California, Irvine June 1997 The Effects of Chemical Control Agents Used Against the Gypsy Moth by Stephanie Wronski
The gypsy moth ( Lymantria dispar ) is a highly disruptive species that can, and has played a distinctive role in the lives of many organisms. Included in these organisms are various deciduous trees and shrubs, wildlife species that share the same environment, and even humans. The gypsy moth destroys the beauty of woodlands via defoliation, alters ecosystems and wildlife habitats, and disrupts our own lives. It should therefore come as no surprise that the U.S. Department of Agriculture and many other agencies have taken huge steps to help diminish populations of this small, yet persistent species. In an effort to control these overwhelming populations, five chemical control agents have been used to suppress and/or eradicate the gypsy moth. Following, is a discussion of each chemical and their potentially hazardous effects on humans. The first chemical control agent is Bacillus thuringiensis var.

About the Lab My research, which is being performed in the lab of Phillip A. Sharp at the Center for Cancer Research, is centered on the biology of small RNAs. This includes small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) that mediate gene expression in cells. I am exploring some of the biologies behind small RNAs in the mouse, hoping to shed new light on novel gene expression mechanisms in mammals.
Research in Computational and Systems Biology My broad goal is to study RNA interference pathways in the mammalian system. Towards accomplishing this goal, I plan to focus on the following immediate questions:

While stationed in Frankfurt, Germany in 1986, then Sergeant McManus served as Powell's bodyguard and interpreter, and it was during that time that Sgt. McManus "came out" to him, confiding to him that he was gay. According to McManus, Gen. Powell, who was at that time the commander of the U.S. Army Fifth Corps, replied, "What do you want me to do about it? As long as youare doing your job well, that does not matter to me. And you are doing an excellent job." Capt. McManus came out of the closet as a gay man publicly on Saturday May 29, 1993 at a Memorial Weekend Requiem in San Francisco honoring the Unknown Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Soldiers. The event was sponsored by the San Francisco Area chapter of the GLAAD and endorsed by many organizations, including the Alexander Hamilton Post of the American Legion.

Date of Defense Availability restricted Abstract ABSTRACT PRIMARY SUCCESSION OF LIANAS IN AN AMAZONIAN FLOODPLAIN FOREST Erin Michael McManus Thesis under the direction of Miles R. Silman, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Biology. Lianas (woody vines) are a major component of Neotropical forests. This investigation examined liana composition in a primary successional forest formed from bank erosion and main channel migration of the Manu River. Previous investigation of this system has shown that local tree species undergo a distinct pattern of succession (chronosequence) on each bend in the river. Four 100 x 4 m transects were established along the chronosequence in 4 distinct seral stages on 5 river bends. It was hypothesized that liana composition in the four seral stages would change over time and reflect that of the local trees. Composition of lianas in seral stages was determined by abundance, species richness and diversity. Mean abundance and species richness increased throughout consecutively aged seral stages but these trends were highly variable on different beaches. Also, abundance and species richness in the 4 seral stages were much lower than abundance and species richness recorded in other studies of older seral stages within the same successional floodplain. No significant correlation was found between abundance and distinct environmental factors, including elevation in relation to the river and light levels. Additionally, to determine if mode of climbing influenced composition in seral stages, climbing guild was recorded for each of the species found in this study. Stem twiners and tendrilate lianas were the most abundant climbers but these two modes of climbing were highly variable within beaches and across similar transects.

The disclosure, first reported by USA Today, came as the Government Accountability Office sent a letter to the Education Department yesterday asking for all materials related to its contract dealings with Armstrong Williams, a prominent media commentator who produced ads that promoted President Bush's No Child Left Behind law. The contract also committed Williams, who is black, to provide media access for former Education Secretary Rod Paige and to persuade other black journalists to talk about the law. MIKE MCMANUS' APOLOGY By Michelle Malkin February 03, 2005 12:31 PM Syndicated columnist Mike McManus has apologized for failing to disclose his work for the Bush Administration: At the heart of the story are two facts. First, a non-profit group I am President of, Marriage Savers, received $10,200 from the Department of Health and Human Services to meet with local leaders organizing "Healthy Marriage Initiatives." HHS recognized that Marriage Savers has developed proven ways to reduce the divorce rate, by organizing churches to adopt a "Community Marriage Policy." HHS wanted to transplant this successful strategy to other cities. Second, I wrote columns praising the Administration for its Healthy Marriage Initiative, without disclosing that Marriage Savers had received a consulting fee. In retrospect, that was a conflict of interest. I am truly sorry. I ask the forgiveness of newspapers publishing my column and of you, as readers. Note that McManus did not say " I've done nothing wrong ," as Armstrong Williams defiantly argued. Nor did he say he
