Paul McGann was born in Liverpool in 1959 into a Roman Catholic family, his father was a metallurgist and mother was a teacher. He was the second of the five surviving children of Claire McGann. He has three brothers who are also actors: Joe (24 July 1958), Mark (12 July 1961), and Stephen (2 February 1963). He also has a sister named Clare (9 September 1965). After attending a Jesuit grammar school in Liverpool, he entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts on the advice of a teacher. Sadly, a dreadful experience with stage fright kept him off the stage for many years. Paul suffered a knee injury while playing football (American soccer) with the production crew of "Sharpe" in 1991 which lost him the lead in that series, but quickly recovered from it, going on to play two roles in "The Three Musketeers" In 1998 he once again graced the boards in Snoo Wilson's play Sabina in which he played famed psychologist Carl Jung. It ran at The Bush theatre from February 5 through March 14, 1998.

The 1996 Doctor Who tv movie was made for American television, and obviously designed to appeal to that market. It was enjoyable in a very superficial way, but did not compare with the wit and imagination of the original British TV series, nor even with the quality sci-fi offerings that America has produced recently - Babylon 5 and The X Files . Perhaps the biggest fault of the Doctor Who movie was that it was trying too hard to be Doctor Who , which resulted in it becoming far too bogged down with series continuity, which must have been confusing and off-putting for the new American audience - and yet for all that, it failed to treat this continuity with any attention to accuracy. It was used gratuitously and without thought, as if the appearance of jelly babies or mention of the Eye of Harmony were there just to justify the film calling itself Doctor Who . Ironically, the original series was at its best when it largely ignored the past and concentrated on telling stories (Season 7, the Tom Baker era, etc.) rather than retreading old ground (most of the eighties episodes). Nevertheless, the movie achieved very good ratings in Britain, perhaps because the name Doctor Who still generates some affection here - and the nineties did seem to be the decade of nostalgia. McGann has begun work on another film project and will not be available for any further Doctor Who related interviews for the foreseeable future. Since we can't interview McGann, we've decided to hold a Doctor Who contest for interested readers. To enter all you have to do is correctly answer the five questions below. I had actually seen films with Paul McGann in them without realizing it. Empire of the Sun (his character kills the young Japanese pilot who befriended Jim blink and you'll miss him) and Alien^3 are the two films that spring to mind. However, I must confess that it was not until I saw him in his Doctor Who costume (he took over from Sylvester McCoy to become the 8th Doctor) that I got interested and eventually decided that Paul deserves a pedestal in the TTT pantheon. In order to prepare for seeing him as the Doctor, I rented two very interesting films the delightful cult wonder and the uneven but sensual The Rainbow (a Ken Russell film which showed just how good Paul looks in red).
Specialities
Paul is a very versatile actor with a wide range of character types. He has portrayed soldiers, mercenaries, priests, a "resting" actor, a genuine doctor, a faux doctor and, of course, THE Doctor among other characters. His character portrayal comes from deep within. His face, with its exquisite bone structure, is expressive and can be either beautiful or hideous with only a little help from makeup (let's face itnasty brown teeth can make anybody look unattractive).

(what really happened and how it affected the lives of the McGann family) This is a reprint of a Guardian article from the Media supplement of October, 1997. Three years ago, the People snapped Paul McGann greeting his friend Catherine Zeta Jones with a fleeting luvvie kiss. A full-scale press hunt was launched to expose him. Paul and his wife Annie have lived with the repercussions ever since. Now, for the first time, they tell Roy Greenslade about their nightmare and why the death of Princess Diana has prompted them to complain to the PCC. There was surprising enthusiasm among tabloid editors for the proposed changes to their code of practice. They concede that they might have "gone over the top" in harassing Princess Diana, but argue that hers was an isolated case. The industry's self regulatory body, the Press Complaints Commission, broadly agrees, reiterating that invasions of privacy are rare. What the PCC means is that complaints are rare. Many victims of intrusion don't go to the PCC. Here is just one example, a saga of press intrusion, harassment and intimidation, all based on an initial lie which stemmed from the misguided activities of the paparazzi. That falsehood continues to be repeated in spite of on-the-record denials.
