The Charge Piece on Earth. Opening Statement A gently charming comedy, An Everlasting Piece touches upon dramatic territory amid its amusingly improbable story of Northern Ireland toupee salesmen. DreamWorks brings it to disc with a solid technical presentation, though a bit light in the extras department. Facts of the Case As barbers at the local mental institution, Colm (Barry McEvoy) and George (Brian F. O'Byrne) sense a tremendous business opportunity when they run across the Scalper (Billy Connolly), a notorious inmate. Once Northern Ireland's only toupee salesman, the Scalper's customer list is a gold mine just waiting to be exploited. With visions of a hairpiece monopoly—Colm selling to the Catholics, and George to the Protestants—a future of leisure for the "Men of Piece" seems assured. However, Colm and George learn that their monopoly has competition from two dorky guys from "Toupee or Not Toupee." The fine folks at "Wigs of Wimbledon," who supply both firms, decide that this cannot stand, and propose that whichever company sells the most wigs will win the right to be Northern Ireland's sole wig proprietors. Our hair heroes have enthusiasm and determination, but lack sales finesse and must contend with such varied hazards as cow manure, toupee-chewing dogs, hard-boiled policemen, and balding IRA terrorists. Thanks to the brilliant insights of Colm's girlfriend, Bronagh (Anna Friel), they have a fighting chance to win their future. Will they, or won't they?

An Everlasting Piece

Directed by Barry Levinson, starring Barry McEvoy, Brían F O'Byrne, Anna Friel and Billy Connolly. While Barry Levinson has directed a handful of 'buddy movies' over the last 20 years ('Rain Man', 'Good Morning Vietnam', 'Diner'), 'An Everlasting Piece' ranks as his most offbeat to date, mixing good gags with heartfelt drama as it examines a friendship across the North's cultural divide. Barry McEvoy is Colm, a Catholic barber who gets a job cutting in an insane asylum and finds that his partner in clippers is George (O'Byrne), a Protestant with a penchant for spouting poetry at the drop of a hair. When a new patient, 'The Scalper' (Billy Connolly), arrives for a long-term stay, Colm and George discover that he was once Belfast's most successful wig salesman and set about looking up his old clients. By now alarms bells should be jumping off walls at the thought of an American director making a film about Northern Ireland involving wigs, the RUC and the IRA, but 'An Everlasting Piece' avoids both the lowest common denominator of cultural comedy and resists the type of schmaltz that US audiences demand with their popcorn. For the first 40 minutes it's extremely funny as Colm and George go door-to-door with their rugs and toe-to-toe with the crazies on both sides. The cast (a criminally undervalued Billy Connolly aside) is strong throughout with McEvoy and O'Byrne turning in an excellent act as the oddest of couples.

I have amassed a ton of vinyl and cassettes from 1977-1993 when I finally switched over to CDs. I am now going through it (slowly) to convert it over into digital form and am writing down my thoughts as I go along.

Well, so I was busy today enjoyin' the weather and helping to pump up that Bush economy and only got to one record.
Phlegm Phlegm LP, Catalyst Records (1986). 1984: I'm hanging out at Jules's Loft in Baltimore waiting for a show when I strike up a conversation with this kid in a mohawk and leather jacket. He's selling a tape of bands from Eastern Maryland and so I buy support the local scene and all. He tells me his name is Barry and he speaks with a slight Irish accent so I find out he's from Belfast, moved to the states when he was 15. I see him off and on over the next few years and even taken in a show where his band is playing and buy his LP. It's nothing remarkable, basically the same-old, same-old hardcore-semi-thrash the lyrics have a little more credibility than the standard "hate your government" stuff because Barry's singing about some real experiences.
Flash forward about 18 years and I'm sitting in the Naro theater in Norfolk at one of the First Look Forums and one of the actors looks like Barry from Belfast but with the baby fat gone. I check the credits and for sure it's Barry McEvoy and he's starring and wrote the movie. He's up above with director Barry Levinson yes as in

Tinnahinch . . . . . . . .1-13, Camross . . . . . . . .1-10
SEVEN months ago or so the name of Tinnahinch was entered into the SHC draw for the first time. The amalgamation of Clonaslee and Rosenallis has already paid dividends as the combination team advanced to this year’s county final at the expense of the mighty Camross.
In the course of the championship Tinnahinch have impressed although in their quarterfinal meeting with Ballacolla their performance suggested that they had gone as far as they might this year.
However, in O’Moore Park on Saturday evening they proved their doubters mistaken as they turned in an honest, vigorous performance to emerge from the shadow of near neighbours Camross.
And this latest victory for the new combination was no fluke. Apart from a few shaky moments in the opening quarter, once they settled into the game Tinnahinch looked the sharper, more lively of the two sides.
But it must be said this was not the Camross of old. There is no doubt that they still have a talented squad of players but they seem to lack the craving of previous sides.

Heywood C. S. 2-10 Knockbeg College 0-9 It was this goal which was to prove a constant thorn for the Knockbeg side who never managed to close the gap beyond three points. Despite the terrible conditions both sides stuck with the task and not until William Barry goaled 12 minutes from time was the result certain. Certainly Heywood looked to more likely to advance throughout but their tendency to take their eye off the target when in front could have cost them. But Knockbeg began to gain a foothold in midfield thanks to Dara McEvoy and Patrick Brennan. This possession led to scores from McEvoy and Keith Purcell to close the gap to four points at the interval, Heywood leading 1-4 to 0-3. Knockbeg took up where they had left off on the restart and points from Enright and Jamie Kavanagh left just two between the sides. But once again they eased up and were punished with points from Ross Munnelly and Patrick Brennan. Full credit to Knockbeg they kept battling and were offered a glimmer of hope as McEvoy and Donoghue found the target. But it was Heywood who finished the stronger with Donoghue (2) and Barry tacking on points.

PLOT:
It's Belfast in the 1980s and Colm (BARRY McEVOY), a Catholic, has just started work as a barber at the local mental hospital. Along with his Protestant coworker, George (BRIAN F. O'BRYNE), Colm gives the various patients haircuts, but realizes there must be more in life for him than doing that. He gets the chance to pursue something more when he hears about a patient known as the Scalper (BILLY CONNOLLY), who once had a monopoly on the entire hairpiece business in Northern Ireland until he scalped several of his customers. Sensing a lucrative business opportunity, Colm and George convince the Scalper to give up his client list and they then set out to learn everything about selling hairpieces, much to the amusement of Colm's mother (RUTH McCABE) and girlfriend, Bronagh (ANNA FRIEL). They're eventually successful, however, in making their first sale with their new company, The Piece People, but then realize that they have competition from another business, Toupee or Not Toupee.
