McDowall, Roddy (1928-1998) For manyperhaps mostchild stars, life after adolescence means a decline in fame, financial and personal disaster, and, in all too many cases, substance abuse and premature death. Roddy McDowall was one of the great exceptions to the rule. The British-born actor not only made a graceful transition from juvenile roles to a career as a highly versatile character actor on both stage and screen, but he also enjoyed acclaim for his photographic portraits of his peers. Sponsor Message.
Roderick Andrew Anthony Jude McDowall was born in London on September 17, 1928, to a Scottish father and an Irish mother. His mother, who had herself aspired to be an actress, enrolled him in elocution lessons at the age of five; and at the age of ten he had his first major film role as the youngest son in Murder in the Family (1938). Over the next two years he appeared in a dozen British films, in parts large and small.

RODDY McDOWALL
TRIBUTE
by Gary Rose
One of the few child actors able to graduate successfully to adult roles, he made his film debut at the age of eight in the film "Murder In The Family" in 1936, but had already appeared on the amateur stage from the age of four. Roderick Andrew Anthony Jude McDowall was born on 17th September 1928 in Herne Hill, London. The son of a merchant marine of Scottish descent and a frustrated actress, he was educated at St. Joseph's College and Hanover Academy, but still found the time to make film appearances. With the outbreak of World War Two, he emigrated to Hollywood where he signed a contract with 20th Century-Fox in 1940. His appearance in "How Green Was My Valley" in 1941 established him as a major child star and he also became popular as the star of animal-and-boy pictures, such as "My Friend Flicka" (1943) and "Lassie Come Home" (1943). Each of these films were excellent family entertainment and reached theatres when audiences needed refreshingly wholesome distraction from the horrors of World War Two. However, in 1945, 20th Century-Fox chose not to renew Roddy's contract and so MGM offered him a part as a teen-ager in "Holiday In Mexico".

Author/Webmaster Sally Mierop Our Roddy left us Saturday, October 3, 1998. He is now in the presence of our Lord. Roddy McDowall will always be best known for his roles in "How Green Was My Valley," "Lassie Come Home," and "Planet of the Apes."
Did you know? - Roddy had been an actor since his first role in the British film, "Scruffy" in 1938 and had more than 140 films to his credit. In Roddy's vast acting career he had played mostly character roles.
Did you know? - "On the Sunny Side," which was filmed in 1942, Roddy had star billing for the first time. His television appearances are too numerous to mention, they just boggle the mind.

Roddy McDowall Roderick Andrew McDowall knew everybody. His dinner parties were legendary. Someone said that at Roddy's, you could see PeeWee Herman sitting next to Dorothy LaMour, at other parties you would find Dominick Dunne, Louise Brooks, Robert Wagner, or Lauren Bacall. No doubt Liz managed to worm her way into more than one of those little get togethers. Liz hates to be called Liz. Roddy couldn't get rid of her if he tried. He's been in a billion different things, but my personal favorites were The Poseidon Adventure and The Night Gallery (the one with the creepy cemetery painting), and Arnold - that great movie with Stella Stevens, when she married the dead guy, and Roddy's suit shrunk, and crushed him. In 1988 he had a successful prostate cancer operation. He lived in Studio City, on Brookdale Road . His house was at 3110 Here's a photograph of his house . Not very exciting is it? Pretty plain. It's supposed to have a fantastic garden. Here's his mailbox , where no doubt hundreds of thank you notes were delivered. Here are his garbage cans . Can you imagine how many 1/2 eaten meals were dumped in these? Many of Liz Taylor's leftovers entered immortality in those very dumpsters.
