Home History Library Museum ... Site Map Sylvester McCoy plays Lieutenant Bowers Born in Argyll, Sylvester McCoy can claim to be a Highlander, despite having an Irish mother and an English father. After a variety of jobs he only turned to acting at the age of twenty-seven. He began in 1971, in Ken Campbell's Roadshow, touring all round Europe and Israel. Back in the U.K. McCoy joined the Theatre Royal at Stratford East under Joan Littlewood. He then spent two years at the NottinghamPlayhouse before signing for 'Vision On', the award winning children's television programme originally designed for the deaf. His talent for visual comedy led to further work in children's television, and an expanding range of roles. His debut in opera was at the Welsh National where he played Puck in 'A midsummer Night's Dream'. A serious dramatic role in Dario Fo's long running West End play 'Can't Pay, Won't Pay' brought him "two and a half years without a day off", before he changed tack again in 'The Pirates of Penzance' at the theatre Royal Drury Lane in 1982. Since completing the role of Bowers in 'The Last Place on Earth', Syvester McCoy has played Buster Keaton at the Nottingham Playhouse, a part written especially for him, and appeared in 'Dramarama' for TVS. Sylvester McCoy was born James Kent-Smith on 20 August 1943, the son of Molly Sheridan and Percy James Kent-Smith, an Irish couple living in Dunoon, Scotland. His father was killed in the Second World War a couple of months before he was born, and he was brought up by his mother, his grandmother - Mary Sheridan - and aunts. He attended St. Mun's, a local Dunoon school. The headmistress, Rosie O'Grady, was keen that her young charges obtain decent jobs upon leaving the school and so organised regular talks from people in all manner of professions. McCoy expressed an interest in every job, and as a result eventually found himself given an afternoon off school to go to see a local priest about entering the priesthood. He left school, joined Blair's College, a seminary in Aberdeen, and between the ages of twelve and sixteen trained to be a priest. It was while at Blair's College that he realised that there was more to life than could be found in Dunoon and discovered classical music and history, which fascinated him. He eventually decided to become a monk and applied to join a Dominican order, but his application was rejected as he was too young. He went instead to Dunoon grammar school, where he discovered the delights of his female fellow pupils and quickly decided that he didn't want to be a priest or a monk after all.

There were no railroads and, in many instances, no roads; Indian trails leading from one point to another took the place of them. Schools, churches, towns, and conveniences, all lay in the future. The McCoy family is one of the oldest in the county, and is ably represented in Rochester by Sylvester J. McCoy, a wealthy retired farmer of that locality. The birth of Sylvester J. McCoy took place in Rochester Township, May 3, 1849, he being a son of Milton D. and Malcina (Cooper) McCoy. John McCoy, the grandfather of Milton D. McCoy, was born July 11, 1763, and died October 24, 1823. This series was a British children's TV show full of sketches, songs, custard, baked beans, water, and whatever else they could dump on the adults. The series regulars are all profiled at TV Cream . But this site, as usual, will profile Sylveste McCoy. (The "r" in his name came later.) Sporting a black t-shirt which said "Sylveste is the Real McCoy," Sylvester guested in several episodes as Professor No Ken Do, the karate expert; a werewolf; a flower; a car; and other interesting identities. Some friends of mine have suggested that he might have been the Phantom Flan Flinger, but I don't believe it for a second. REVIEW What is it about British kid's shows?
