In the 1930s, his family moved to the Jewish district in Los Angeles. After being expelled from high school for gambling in the early 1940s, Berman immersed himself in the growing West Coast jazz scene. During this period, he briefly attended the Jepson Art School and Chouinard Art School, but departed when he found the training too academic for his needs. In 1949, while working in a factory finishing antique furniture, he began to make sculptures from unused scraps and reject materials. By the early 1950s, Berman had become a full-time artist and an active figure in the beat community in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Many art historians consider him to be the 'father' of the California assemblage movement. Moving between the two cities, Berman devoted himself to his mail art publication SEMINA, which contained a sampling of beat poetry and images selected by Berman. In 1963, permanently settled in Topanga Canyon in the Los Angeles area, Berman began work on verifax collages (printed images, often from magazines and newspapers, mounted in collage fashion onto a flat surface, sometimes with solid bright areas of acrylic paint). He continued creating these works, as well as rock assemblages, until his death in 1976.

Repository: Creator: New American Poetry Circuit. Title: New American Poetry Circuit Records. Dates: Extent: 1 linear foot. Record Series: Language English. Abstract:
History:
A cooperative organized to arrange and promote poetry readings for its registered poets in universities and colleges; founded and directed by Jeanetta L. Jones from an office in Berkeley, California. The idea of the cooperative was mooted by Jeanetta Jones through her correspondence with Clayton Eshleman. Both of them were poets, though Eshleman already had a following and had produced some anthology collections. Ms. Jones sent out brochures that contained biographical data of the poets to all prospective clients throughout the country. Members included: D. Alexander, David Antin, Harvey Bialy, Paul Blackburn, Victor Coleman, Ed Dorn, Theodore Enslin, Clayton Eshleman, Larry Goodell, Jack Hirschman, Anselm Hollo, Kenneth Irby, Robert Kelly, Phillip Lamantia, Jack MacLow, Michael McClure, Daphne Marlatt, David Meltzer, Jerome Rothenberg, Armand Schwerner, Charles Stei, and Diane Wakoski. Correspondence to Edward Dorn from 1956-1993 comprises over half of the collection. Occasional letters are sent to either Peter Michelson or Jennifer Dunbar Dorn, but they are related either to the Rolling Stock
Extensive notes, drafts, and rewrites of Edward Dorn's poetry include Abhorrences, Book of Poems, Captain Jack's Chaps, Collected Gran Apachería, Cosmology of Finding Your Spot, The Cycle, Geography, Gran Apachería, Gunslinger, Hands Up!, North Atlantic Turbine, Recollections of Gran Apachería, Songs Set Two: A Short Count, 24 Love Songs , and Yellow Lola . Similar materials exist for Edward Dorn's works of prose, including Abilene, Abilene, The Book of Daniel, Shoshoneans, Some Business Recently Transacted in the White World, Views , and What I See in the Maximus Poems . However, various published works by Edward Dorn appear to have left no drafts or revisions to examine. Personal information about Edward Dorn is found only in the correspondence or interviews-most of the published work on Edward Dorn concerns his work, not his personal life.
Edward Dorn's publications Bean News and Rolling Stock include submissions by various authors and editorial notes. Broadsides include art and published poetry, as well as announcements of book signings or poetry readings. Taped interviews and recorded poetry readings comprise the majority of the AV materials. Photographs range from family snapshots to photos for illustrations or articles. Numerous books and periodicals have been removed from the collection and can be found in Archives and Special Collections at the Dodd Research Center. Check the library catalogue (HOMER) for call numbers.

Michael McClure Born: October 20, 1932
Place of Birth: Marysville, Kansas
Texts from Levi Asher Literary Kicks
McClure grew up in Seattle, where he was fascinated by nature and wildlife and expected to grow up to be a natural scientist. He went to San Francisco as a young man, participated in a poetry workshop with Robert Duncan, and got drawn into the emerging Beat vortex of the San Francisco Poetry Renaissance. He was one of the five poets who read at the famous Six Gallery reading in 1955. I've typed in of the poems he read there, a poem I like a lot called 'Point Lobos: Animism'. McClure's first book, 'Passage,' was published in 1956. Like Gary Snyder he writes poetry infused with the awareness of nature, but McClure's special interest is in the animal consciousness that too often lies dormant in mankind. He has a consistent message: "When a man does not admit that he is an animal, he is less than an animal. Not more but less." There is no cuteness in McClure's animal kingdom, populated with Buddhist panda bears, Beat tomcats and doomed whales. I have only recently begun to read his work, but he's quickly becoming one of my favorites. McClure appears as the handsome and happily-married Pat McLear in Kerouac 's novel 'Big Sur,' in which Kerouac raves about McClure's poem 'Dark Brown.'

Above is a photo from 1968 of the Peace Eye Bookstore, located at 147 Avenue A in the Lower East Side of NYC. The sign was created by noted artist Spain Rodriguez (who also painted the Free Store Sign around the corner on 10th Street.). Peace Eye was a well known cultural center for its era, for instance sponsoring the first exhibition of important comic artists such as R. Crumb, Art Spiegelman, Spain Rodriguez, Kim Deitch, and others. Peace Eye also served as a community print center, and was a stopping off point for the underground railroad helping people flee the war. America's first LeMar demonstrations were organized out of Peace Eye. We will be selling books, tractata, pamphlets, posters and ephemera from our collection.
