Richard III
By William Shakespeare
Young Vic
Review by Philip Fisher (2001) The play starts with the ambitious Richard a very long way from the Crown. However the kind of obstacles that would prevent a lesser man - for example, the murder of most of his own family - does not seem to be any kind of block to Richard. He is one of those people with a kind of manufactured charm that he can turn on or off at will. He is a devious plotter and great dissembler who will always get his way. It is never easy to see why the lady Anne who is, after all, both the wife and daughter-in-law of victims of Richard, should change from cursing him to marrying him almost instantly. The mysteries of love are never easy to understand and this match does not follow any kind of logic. The scene where Henry VI’s body is brought onto stage and Richard dips his fingers into the blood says an awful lot about the "bottled spider".

10 something; I've lost count to be honest:
Rage Update: While many of you are thrilled by the results, some of you are pretty furious with the selections of the panel. Ian Bond is apopleptic, and is vehemently opposed to some of the results, while Sarah, who has loyally been with us throughout, has been driven to blind fury by Lee Evans's failure to win Best Actor In A Musical. ML Freeman "can't believe Jonathan Pryce didn't win" and, like a whole host of you (and Brian Conley) is shocked that the Olivier Awards haven't been shown on television for the last two years. Ryan Limb, our first correspondent back at 6pm, is thrilled at Laura's win -

NYC Weather A CurtainUp Review A Midsummer Night's Dream by Lizzie Loveridge This is part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's trio of programs making a brief visit to the Brooklyn Academy of music playing at the Harvey Theatre, 651 Fulton St., Brooklyn (718/636-4100). Midsummer Night's Dream will play May 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27 The production details are the same as in the review below. How difficult it is to produce an original rendering of A Midsummer Night's Dream without appearing gimmicky. The current "dream" from the Royal Shakespeare Company, directed by Michael Boyd, reinvents the comedy for a twentieth century audience and has the most wonderful movement and design. By contrast, the rude mechanicals, TUC (Trades Union Congress) grey suited, dance a vigorous dance based on the South African "gumboot" dance. Nick Ryan is as endearing a Bottom as one could hope for. Like a child, his enthusiasm runs to wanting to play all the parts of the play. The comic performances from the mechanicals are fresh and would not be out of place in the Comedy Store. Puck, Aidan McArdle, is a leprechaun of a fairy and his encounter with Peaseblossom, Sirine Saba, is mischievous and erotic as they rip each other's formal wear to pieces in a mock strip fight.

http://www.ajhakari.com/e/ellaenchanted.htm
Ella Enchanted by Adam J. Hakari " Ella Enchanted feels the need to force everything out immediately, apparently in case someone in the audience coughs and misses something." Ella Enchanted aims to be a gleefully anachronistic fairy tale with a clever sense of humor, a la Shrek . But in comparing the two (and in keeping with the archery metaphor), one sees the latter as hitting the bullseye and the former as taking out some poor spectator in the audience. While the "fairy tale with an edge" approach worked wonders for Shrek , it makes Ella Enchanted look like a cheap rip-off. The film is based upon an acclaimed children's novel, but those who haven't read it might get the feeling that either the book is overrated or the filmmakers have truly missed the target. Instead of adhering to an easygoing approach, letting the jokes come on their own time and the satire work its way through the story, Ella Enchanted feels the need to force everything out immediately, apparently in case someone in the audience coughs and misses something. Most of the film's elements are recycled over and over again to the point of annoyance.

The Charge A fairy-tale adventure for the hero in all of us. Opening Statement Gail Carson Levine's beloved novel about a girl cursed with obedience comes to the screen in a rollicking, music-filled spectacle starring the luminous Anne Hathaway ( The Princess Diaries ), who seems to be making a career for herself playing princesses. Peopled by a lively cast of characters both dastardly and endearing, Ella Enchanted Ella Enchanted Facts of the Case Ella of Frell has a problem—an unusual problem. As a baby, she was given the "gift" of obedience by her irresponsible fairy godmother, Lucinda (Vivica A. Fox, Kill Bill: Volume 1 ). Thus, all her life Ella has had to do whatever anyone orders her to do. When her beloved mother dies and her father takes a new wife (Joanna Lumley, Absolutely Fabulous ) to help replenish the family coffers, it's only a matter of time before Ella's bratty new stepsisters, Hattie (Lucy Punch) and Olive (Jennifer Higham), learn they can manipulate her.

Ella Enchanted
Cast: Anne Hathaway, Hugh Dancy, Aidan McArdle, Cary Elwes Director: Tommy O'Haver MOVIE HELP WEB KERNEL RATING This bright and sprightly romp through a fantasy kingdom is a very nice way to spend some time lost in its magic. Not completely serious most of the time, it takes a number of well-worn tales and fables and transforms them in a delightful way. We meet Ella of Frell (Hathaway), at birth burdened by a particularly wicked enchantment given to her in a fit of pique by Lucinda the Fairy (Vivica A. Fox): she is forced to obey commands given to her. We see the effects of this as she grows up in school, although fortunately it doesn't mar her young life too much. She grows into a self-possessed young woman, made especially evident by her protests against Prince Regent Edgar (Elwes) and his policy of banning non-humans and sending them off to the forests. She is disappointed to learn that Prince Charmont (Dancy) seems ready to continue Edgar's rules when he comes to power. Ella decides to go off and try to both find Lucinda to rid herself of the curse and to convince Prince Charmont the error of bigotry against the elves, giants, and the like. She meets up with Slannen the Elf (McArdle) along the way, who actually wishes to be a lawyer but is forced to sing and dance because, well.. elves sing and dance. This is made evident in a wonderful parody "big musical number" as Slannen tries to hurry Ella through the elven village. There are a number of other meetings with humans and non-humans alike that hold on to this hip, slightly sarcastic but still upbeat tone during Ella's journey.

The more pressing issue is whether you should bother to. The problem with Dan Farrelly's translation of Goethe's Under the Curse lies in the quandary of taking part of a story but making a complete piece in itself. What seems to have the potential of an epic is somehow trivialised in this short piece, and it's a tricky task pinpointing why.

Directed by Tommy O'Haver, from a screenplay by Laurie Craig, Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, and Jennifer Heath and Michele J. Wolff, based on the novel by Gail Carson Levine. 95 minutes. Rated PG for some crude humor and language. Several theaters. Wearing what look like castoffs from Liv Tyler's "Lord of the Rings" wardrobe, Hathaway's sweetly earnest performance makes this ambitious and occasionally downright weird tale work. Joanna Lumley ("Absolutely Fabulous") as the wicked stepmother and Aidan McArdle as a disgruntled singing elf (tired of performing for "the Man," he wants to be a lawyer) contribute funny supporting turns.

Directed by: Tommy O'Haver Genre: Comedy/Romance/Fantasy MPAA Rating: PG for some crude humor and language Ella Enchanted is a hilarious fantasy-adventure, complete with ogres, wicked stepsisters, giants, elves, and fairytale magic! Ella Enchanted tells an enchanting story of a young woman who must look inside herself for the power to overcome a painful spell and save the man she loves as well as his kingdom. The film is rated PG for some mildly crude humor and language. Throughout her journey, Ella reminds moviegoers of the importance of accepting others, following your heart, and learning to find your true self, making the film a wonderful story for parents and children alike. Like all children in this fanciful world, Ella (Anne Hathaway) is given a "gift" at birth. However, Ella's gift also acts as a curse- she must obey every command she is given, no matter how silly or dangerous! From practicing her mandolin to stuffing her face with cake to stealing things at the Frell Galleria, any order Ella receives she executes immediately. When Ella's mother passes away, she reminds Ella that what's in her heart is stronger than any spell, a message that Ella keeps with her always. Ella never reveals her secret to anyone, and her beloved housemaid Mandy (Minnie Driver), who has been with her since birth, is the only one who knows her secret now. While Ella has never wanted her gift, it isn't until her father remarries and introduces her two evil stepsisters that Ella runs into serious trouble.

    Ella Enchanted (PG)
Review by: Jack Foley Rating: Two DVD SPECIAL FEATURES: N/A THE spirit of Shrek runs rife throughout Ella Enchanted, a better-than-average take on the Cinderella story. Anne Hathaway (of The Princess Diaries fame) stars as Ella, a teen princess in waiting who is forced to endure a spell of complete obedience bestowed upon her by an over-enthusiastic fairy (Vivica Fox) while she is still a baby. The spell means she is compelled to do anything she is commanded - a device used to mischievous effect when her father (Patrick Bergin) re-marries the dastardly Dame Olga (Joanna Lumley) and Ella is forced to befriend her two spiteful daughters, Hattie (Lucy Punch) and Olive (Jennifer Higham). Determined to break the spell, however, Ella sets off to find the fairy responsible and sets off on a journey frought with peril in order to do so, befriending a cheek elf (Aidan McArdle) along the way, as well as the idolized Prince Char (Hugh Dancy), heir to the kingdom currently ruled over by the scheming Sir Edgar (Cary Elwes). Needless to say, the ensuing adventure finds Ella falling in love with the prince, while also exposing the evil and corruption that is rife throughout the kingdom.
