These are the men who will elect the next pope in modern times, someone chosen from their own ranks.
They worshipped togetherÉand they worked, discussing the church's agenda in the new millennium. In the end, they crafted a statement calling for a recommitment to applying to the gospel message key global problems. They endorsed new efforts to spur both ecumenical and interfaith dialogue, appealed for solidarity with Africa, and urged an immediate cease-fire between Israelis and Palestinians.
During medieval times, popes often held advisory meetings, or consistories, with the cardinals, but the practice stopped in the late sixteenth century. Pope John Paul II revived these consultations in 1979 because he wanted to hear from his cardinals. This was his sixth extraordinary consistory.
John Paul called this gathering, he said, to build on last year's Jubilee, or Holy year.

Midway through our conversation about Fresh Air Fiend , Paul Theroux reminds me that during the 15 years in which he wrote the 49 travel essays and articles collected here, he also wrote a major book on China (Riding the Iron Rooster), three additional travel books, a controversial memoir about his friendship with V.S. Naipaul (In Sir Vidia's Shadow), and more than a handful of novels (including My Secret History, Millroy the Magician, and Kowloon Tong). Something like a dozen books in all. "It's not that I was writing these pieces with my left hand," Theroux says, "but I was doing other things at the same time. These pieces illuminate those books, and those books derive somewhat from the experiences recorded here. There's a certain synchronicity in writing travel pieces and also living my life as a novelist and a travel writer." This is disheartening. You'd expect perhaps even hope that there'd be a significant decline in quality in these occasional pieces, written over the years for publications as varied as Outside magazine, The New York Times, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. And, no doubt, readers will have their favorites and less favorites among them. But in each of the pieces collected in

VANCOUVER, SATURDAY MAY 18, 2002:
On May 18, 1952, in defiance of the authorities who refused to allow him to cross the border, Paul Robeson stood on the back of a flat bed truck on the US-Canada border and sang songs of defiance and solidarity to 40,000 people. 50 years later, on May 18, 2002 activists from both Canada and the United States, organized Here We Stand! , a free concert at the same location to commemorate the 1952 event. The issues dear to Paul Robeson - social justice, freedom, and civil rights - are as pertinent now are they were then.

He held positions at Oxford University and, after 1967, at the University of California, Berkeley. Analysis of Meanings Conversational Implicature Intention-Based Semantics Shift from Language to Mind ... References Herbert Paul Grice was born in 1913 and died in 1988. From the late 1930's until 1967 he held positions at Oxford University. During the war years he served in the Royal Navy. In 1967 he moved to the University of California, Berkeley. He retired in 1979 but continued to teach until 1986. Grice is best known for his analysis of speaker's meaning, his conception of conversational implicature, and his project of intention-based semantics. Largely as a result of these ideas, the focus of the philosophical debate over the nature of meaning shifted during the 1970's and 1980's from linguistic representation to mental representation.
Grice's most important ideas may be found in his William James lectures presented at Harvard in 1967. Several lectures from that series were published in the form of journal articles, and for many years the lectures circulated in their entirety in mimeograph. They were finally published (in revised form) in 1989 in Grice's collection of essays

Fractal Pages
frac·tal (frâk´tël) n. A geometric pattern that is repeated at ever smaller scales to produce irregular shapes and surfaces that cannot be represented by classical geometry. Fractals are used especially in computer modeling of irregular patterns and structures in nature. [French, from Latin fractus , past participle of frangere , to break. See FRACTION.]
Fractals are extensions of traditional Euclidean shapes, such as lines, squares, and circles, with two fundamental properties. First, when you view fractals, you can magnify them an infinite number of times, and they contain structure at every magnification level. Second, you can generate fractals using finite and typically small sets of instructions and data. Fractals grew out of the goal of mathematicians to completely describe the world using standard geometrical expressions. IBM mathematician Benoit B. Mandelbrot, PhD, proved and published the theory behind fractals in 1981 and was the first to view computer-generated fractal structures. The well-known Mandelbrot Set is named in his honor. Another famous fractal researcher, with a set also named for him, is French mathematician Gaston Julia.

Aids and the Polio Vaccine
From Paul Osterrieth Edward Hooper ( LRB , 3 April ) accuses me of having prepared CHAT, an oral polio vaccine, in chimpanzee cells contaminated with an HIV-related virus in February 1958. I have already categorically denied this in an article published in the Transactions of the Royal Society in 2001. The new evidence cited by Hooper consists of interviews with two persons said to be former technicians in my lab in Kisangani, Jacques Kanyama and Philippe Elebe. I remember Kanyama with affection, but he was a low-level employee with no scientific background who performed simple tasks and did not work with me on cell culture. Any judgment he could make more than forty years later is pure supposition. Elebe I do not know; he never worked with me and his testimony isn't of any value. CHAT polio vaccine was never produced in Kisangani - we had primitive equipment and no means of testing the purity, titre and safety of a viral vaccine. Moreover, in February 1958 I had just returned from a study visit to the United States, and could not, despite Hooper's allegations, easily have prepared a new pool of vaccine using the techniques which I had just learned.

Corpus Paulinum (the Corpus-Paul List) is a moderated academic e-list dedicated to the scholarly discussion and evaluation of critical questions surrounding the life, influence, teaching, theology, and the writings of the Apostle Paul. The List's purpose is to provide a forum where these questions may be raised, entertained, and debated outside of the usual arenas of printed journals and monographs. Additionally, Corpus Paulinum is intended to be a venue in which those working professionally in the field of Pauline studies may post and receive critical responses to papers or ideas that are in the process of development. Given the academic nature of the List, it is ordinarily expected that those subscribing and contributing to Corpus Paulinum will be professional scholars and graduate students who are familiar with both the primary and secondary Pauline literature, as well as with the contours of the issues that are part and parcel of current scholarly Pauline studies. But beginners in the serious study of Paul who wish to make use of the List to gain and advance their knowledge of things Pauline are also welcome to participate provided they respect the List's focus.

This is not merely a terminological quibble. The existence of these two different concepts rather reflects an actual social condition, the understanding of which can take us a long way towards a better appreciation of the place and the function of the intellectual in society. For the first definition, broad as it is, applies accurately to a large group of people forming an important part of society: individuals working with their minds rather than with their muscles, living off their wits rather than off their hands. Let us call these people intellect workers.

Why you should be a socialist Biography Despite coming from a ruling-class background, Paul Foot broke politically with his class and became a revolutionary socialist while working as a young journalist on the Daily Record in Glasgow. He became one of the finest investigative journalists of his generation and was responsible for exposing corruption in high places and the blatant injustice of the British legal system. He was a great populariser of the socialist message both in print and in person at innumerable meetings up and down Britain. He also published a number of important political studies (e.g. on Harold Wilson and Enoch Powell) as well introducing a new generation to the revolutionary message of radical poets such as Percy Shelley and William Blake. In 2000 he received the Journalist of the Decade award in recognition of his principled struggle against injustice. This archive attempts to provide a glimpse of all aspects of his political work. Google ponders Blogger, Gmail integration
InfoWorld Google is contemplating various improvements to its popular Blogger Web logging service, including native image uploading and deeper integration with the company's Gmail Web-mail service, according to a Google executive.
Google is also considering the creation of an enterprise Blogger version, as well as letting users limit access to their blogs by creating private groups, said Biz Stone, Blogger senior specialist.
Although Blogger currently allows users to post text and photos to their blogs via any e-mail program, Google is looking into a tighter integration with Gmail, Stone said.
Google is also weighing whether to develop an enterprise version of Blogger that would be tailored for workplace use, as opposed to individual consumer use, Stone said. "It's something we're always thinking about, something we have a few people thinking about and looking into. It's definitely being researched," he said.
